Principals Report

ANZAC Day Commemorations

A beautiful school ANZAC service was held last Wednesday morning in our hall with all students. The participation and respect shown by students was very commendable. A special thank you to Mrs Brunton, our guest speaker from the Maleny RSL, who participated and spoke about the historical significance and symbolism of rosemary and ANZAC Day. It was pleasing to see so many parents in attendance helping to demonstrate the national pride and importance that our country gives to ANZAC Day.

Our School Captains represented our school proudly at the Maleny Hospital Memorial Service on ANZAC Day. Sophia and Franklin spoke beautifully, and together with Aliea and Theo, layed a wreath as representatives of our school. Our four Captains then led our school in the street march that concluded with Maleny’s main service. Once again a great showing of students, parents and staff enabled our school to shine along with other community groups. Thank you to Mrs Heiniger and all staff in attendance for coordinating this year’s ANZAC Day commemorations.

Year 6 Camp - Bunnings Fundraiser

The P & C financially supports the Year 6 Camp each year. To help the fundraising efforts that contribute to this camp we encourage Year 6 families to volunteer at a Bunnings Sausage Sizzle to be held on Sunday 19th May 2019 at Bunnings Caloundra. The P & C has done several of these BBQ events before with great success.

We need to have a minimum of 4 volunteers for each shift. The first shift involves the setup process as well as cooking. The last shift involves the pack up and clean. Cooking stops at 3pm.

See below for the timeslots to volunteer on a roster.  Please email our Year 6 parent co-ordinator Veronica Strydom by email - jvcss17@gmail.com with your shift preference. The completed roster will be sent out closer to the time together with other useful information for the day.

Volunteer Roster:

  • 7am to 10 am
  • 10 am to 1 pm
  • 1 pm to 4 pm

Free Vision Screening for Preps

Children’s Health Queensland is running a vision screening program for all Prep children in Queensland schools. A registered nurse will conduct vision screening tests at Maleny State School on Friday the 14 June (only). Parents will receive a letter with further details. 100% of our Prep students have been tested over the last few years with parents grateful for this additional free eye health check. Consent forms must be returned to Prep teachers by the 20 May.

Knitfest Donations of Felt / Wool Required

This year our students will be decorating our front fence for Knitfest (last weekend in June) and we will require quite a lot of felt and wool. It will be an Australiana theme so all colours will be required.

Class themes:

Prep – Decorated Aussie thongs
Year 1 – The Beach
Year 2 – The Bush
Year 3 – Indigenous Australians
Year 4 – Plants/Floral (Wattle/Bottlebrush)
Year 5 – Aussie BBQ
Year 6 – Icons (Opera House, Sydney Harbour Bridge etc)

If you see some cheap felt/wool or have some that you don’t require please drop it in to the office. If you would like to help we would be very appreciative even if it is attaching completed items on to the hessian, many hands make light work here.

Mother’s Day Stall Donations Required - Final Week

Our P&C will again be running a Mother's Day Stall where students may purchase inexpensive gifts for someone special on Mother's Day. Some of the items for sale will be provided by the P&C but we are also seeking quality donations from families.

Suggested items to donate may include: soap, candles, chocolates, tea, coffee, linen, toiletries.

So have a look in your cupboards, re-gift unwanted pressies or drop something new into the "Mother's Day Stall Donations" box in each classroom.

We will be accepting donations up until Friday 3rd May.

Tues 7th May - Friday 10th May between 8.15 and 8.45am, students will be able to purchase a gift.

We plan to have a range of gifts at $2, $3, $5 and $10.

Thank you for supporting the P&C.

Cross Country Champions

Cross Country placegetters from Prep to Year 6 were acknowledged on Assembly last Tuesday. Congratulations to all participants who competed and overcame soggy conditions in the last week of school. 2019 champions Barrun celebrated as the winning House. Thank you to Mr Turner, staff and our Year 6 students that assisted younger grades. Mr Sherwell, our school’s officer, did a wonderful job preparing the track in trying conditions.

A big thank you also to the large number of parents who marched alongside their children in the Maleny Anzac march and attended the various services with their children.

Writing

Writing is a complex process that includes everything from handwriting skill to sentence construction to planning and drafting a story. The world we live in is increasingly a technological world and apps play a huge part in our world. Certain apps can help young children along all of the steps of the writing process, including the final stages — publishing and sharing their writing with others. Several apps can turn your iPad into a handwriting tablet for practice.

Over the next couple of Familygrams I will provide information on a number of apps that can be downloaded to assist children with the many aspects of writing.

Great New Math Resources for Maleny State School Students!

Thanks to our dedicated P&C and your participation in our school’s ‘Parent Direct Toy Fundraiser,’ held last year in Term 4. Our school successfully raised $400.00 in credit vouchers with Modern Teaching Aids.

The P&C kindly passed on the credit vouchers to be utilised for our current ongoing upgrade of our school’s math resources and manipulatives for student use in our classrooms. They are vital to your child’s education due to the value of integrating a variety of engaging hands on resources to assist with the consolidation of mathematical concepts. As we aspire to continue to cater for all learning styles of students within our classrooms, quality tangible resources play an important role in the acquisition of various mathematical skills. An array of fabulous new resources have recently arrived and are currently being organised ready for use in classrooms.

We greatly appreciate and thank our school’s P&C and the ongoing parent support in contributing to the high-quality learning experiences at Maleny State School.

PBL (Positive Behaviour Learning)

Our school’s current 4Be Focus Rule

Our Be Respectful Buzz phrase for the first two weeks of term is “Manners Matter.” This means that we use manners, speak nicely, care about others, take turns, include others, listen and accept other people's ideas. Our learning will be about the different ways we show manners – being friendly, greeting others, saying please and thank you. Students are expected to use their manners in all areas around our school and out of school, particularly when they are wearing their school uniform.

Be Club Student Aims for this Term

As we begin a new term, it is a time for students to reflect on their achievements from last term and consider their aims for the new term. Students are encouraged to think about the school’s 4Be’s and how they may reach their desired 4Be Club for the term. Students displaying positive behaviours will continue to be rewarded with 4 Be cards which are traded for stamps on their new individual tracking sheets for this term. As in the last term, students participate in rewards according to the club they are in. This term’s rewards day will be held on Wednesday 26th June.

100 Days of Prep

There was great excitement on our first day back when Zero the Hero visited for the 5th time. We counted in tens to fifty and realised we are half way to completing our 100 days of prep. We made crowns to celebrate.

Our Material World

We are investigating materials and their properties as part of our science learning. This learning will lead to making a garden ornament from suitable materials. We would be grateful for any donations of beads, buttons, coat hangers, old utensils or other interesting materials.

We are looking forward to sharing a busy and fun-filled term 2 with you.

Mandy Bauer (Prep A) & Lindy Hicks (Prep B)

Year 1A & 1B

Welcome to 2019 Term 2! We hope everyone enjoyed the school holidays and that the Easter Bunny found everyone. We are trusting that the children have had a welcomed rest. Our classes have a busy term ahead with a variety of new learning activities for students to be involved in. We are looking forward to a great term and to see what kind of weather Maleny has around the corner for us as we head into Winter.

A highlight for this term will be Science. We will be investigating life and living. To connect their learning to real life, we will be hatching chickens in our classrooms while we investigate what living things (plants and animals) need to stay alive. Feel free to come and be a part of the excitement of our hatching chickens, if you can. The children are excited to share this experience with you.

Happy Holidays

I hope everyone had a fantastic restful break over the school holidays. We were able to sneak in a couple of Easter themed activities just at the end of last term. Not only to celebrate the up-coming Easter holiday but it also ties in as a part of our HASS unit throughout the first semester as we explore different celebrations and commemorations to different groups. Students have enjoyed the art and craft-based activities incorporated into the exploration of Chinese New Year, St Patricks Day, Harmony Day and Easter so far. Below are some of our ‘Funky Bunnies’ completed by some of our students.

Math Rotations

Throughout the year students eagerly look forward to our Math Rotations Session. These generally runs at the end of each week. It is a time for students to consolidate their learning in an enjoyable self-directed way with their peers. Each session focuses on a recently learned mathematical concept. Five stations are pre-prepared for each weekly session. Four are game based and are designed to enable students to work in pairs or in a small group. This provides a valuable opportunity for self-directed and peer engaged learning. Students are encouraged to converse with each other about related mathematical concepts as well as practising vital social skills while co-operating with others. One station is always with the teacher. This allows students to review the focus concept and provides an opportunity for small group differentiated teaching, monitoring and feedback. This is a valuable process for both teacher and students. One of our last focus sessions was based around multiplication. Below is a sneak peak of some of our Math Rotations in action!

Year 3A & 3B

Welcome back to Term 2! It has been lovely to see the children and to share our holiday activities. This week we participated in our schools ANZAC day parade. We gained understandings around the importance and significance of the herb, Rosemary.

We have been brainstorming and planning for Knitfest. Our Year 3 topic is Indigenous Australia. We would be very appreciative if you have any wool that you may be able to donate for our task. We require all colours and please feel free to let us know when you can come in and knit with us!

Our technology task requires the children to bring in materials to create an individual desk caddy. This caddy will need to be made from recyclable materials. Please send in these items as soon as possible.

Saving Superman

Forget the Avengers! The Year 4 classes have started their planning on Saving Superman who has been captured atop a tower of kryptonite (a block tower actually). This design and digital technologies challenge get teams to work together to build a working rescue craft, built out of recycled materials, that use a robot as its power source. Failure is expected and encouraged to problem solve and learn how best to refine their designs. Fingers crossed Superman will survive this term!

Book Donations

We would like to thank all of the parents who recently donated novels or books from home that were no longer needed for our library collection. Heaps of popular titles/authors have been added in like Tashi, Roald Dahl series, the Narnia series, Paul Jennings titles, Harry Potter Series, Andy Griffith’s Treehouse series, Enid Blyton, Gabrielle Lord, Bad Guys from Aaron Blabey and a whole pile of Aussie Bites books. We love these donations and are always on the lookout as students can’t get enough of them. If you have any books you’d like to pass on feel free to let us know. These books are currently being accessioned and covered so they will last a long time. Thanks again to all of the families that have kindly donated these books.

Adrian Greig & Ms Shelley.

Chappy News – Easter Holidays

Welcome back to Term 2 everyone. I’m sure you would all agree that the holidays went much too fast. I hope that you all had a restful and blessed time with your families, reconnecting and bonding with your children.

I always find that it is exactly that for me. Taking time to have those lazy mornings in bed, cuddling with your child and listening to them without the same distraction that a working day brings is so beneficial in restoring relationship. I was struck once again at how important and valuable it is to invest time into our relationships. To just listen and be present with the people most treasured in our lives shows honour and respect that builds lasting relationships. I also realised in the holidays just how distracted I can be and the need to be conscious of where my head is at. Paying attention to details, seizing opportunities for fun and laughter are crucial in any family. I realized again just how precious my life is and meditated on the fact that family is such a gift and more important than any material possession. To invest in relationships is the best investment that any parent can make. Being grounded in this truth is a vital place to be mentally and emotionally as so often we can become restless and discontent with things in our life that aren’t even important!

I hope that this term you seize those opportunities for play and spending time with your family. To strive to be a present parent who loves and listens to their child is a great goal to have. I wish everyone the best and I am here if you ever need a listening ear.

UPCOMING EVENTS…

  • MENTOR TRAINING DAY (date to be finalised. Watch the school noticeboard for more info) This is for any volunteers who have a spare hour a week to invest in the life of one child, for one year. Please see me for more information. We can provide Blue Card applications.
