Principals Report

Sensational Smooth Start

Welcome back to what we are determined to make our best ever year at Maleny SS. If staff, students and our school community can join us in this pledge it will once again be an incredibly successful year.

Maleny SS School Values

  • High Expectations
  • A Supportive Learning Culture
  • Being a Reflective Life Long Learner

I congratulate all of our staff who have worked incredibly hard last week in creating a supportive learning environment for all students and setting High Expectations by embedding school / classroom rules and routines. Teachers have also coached students to set academic goals, particularly in WRITING (specifically grammar) our school’s 2019 focus area to teach students skills of how to be a learner for life.

I look forward to saying hello in person this Friday afternoon to all families at our Welcome Banquet. A special welcome to our new Preppies and families that have commenced their first year at Maleny SS. Please ensure you assist us to enact our school values by actively supporting all students and families especially those new to Maleny.

Meet and Greet Parent Information Sessions - This Week

Teachers this week will hold parent information sessions after school. These sessions will introduce parents to their child’s teacher and inform parents in approximately 30 minutes how class routines will operate throughout the year. Information regarding curriculum content, student expectations, yearly camps and opportunities for parents to ask questions will be provided. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet your children’s teacher and find out how your child’s classroom operates. Building a strong relationship with your child’s teacher that allows open communication is extremely important.

Welcome Back Banquet Friday

Please join with us this Friday, 8th February from 3:30pm – 5:30 pm to meet some new families and teachers, and catch up with some of your children’s friends’ families. This event is a joint initiative of the school and P&C. Please bring a plate, picnic blanket if you wish and enjoy some friendly company on our school oval or in the shed if it rains. Students loved playing on the oval last year with their friends. A free BBQ will be in operation and drinks will be available for purchase, you are welcome to BYO. This event was well supported last year and staff are looking forward to catching up with parents and students in an informal atmosphere.

P&C Meeting

Our first meeting for the year will be held on Wednesday 13 Feb at 6:30pm in the Innovation Centre (library). Please join us, new faces always welcome.

Reminder: Slow down in 40km/h school zones

Police across the Sunshine Coast District are urging all motorists to take extra care, slow down and be on the lookout for pedestrians near schools. The school zone speed limit is designed to ensure motorists have a greater chance to react if something unexpected happens.

Children can be impulsive, unpredictable and inexperienced, which is why motorists need to exercise caution in the vicinity of a school.

Speeding through school zones greatly increases the risk to pedestrians as the faster a vehicle is travelling, the longer it takes to stop and the greater the severity of impact.

For further information on school zones, visit

http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/schoolzones

Parent Teacher Interviews Yrs 1- 6

Each year we have 2 formal occasions where parents sit one on one with their child’s teacher and discuss their child and the progress they are making. Please go on line and book your time slot. If you do not have internet access please call the office who will be able to assist you.

Booking Instruction Information will go home on 11 February 2019.

Interview One (Yrs 1-6)

The first opportunity will be in week four Term One to open communication channels between teachers and parents and allow a positive relationship to be developed. On this occasion parents will do the majority of the talking informing the teacher about your child and how they learn best (e.g. what they are good at, interests, motivators, special needs or considerations, medical issues, social abilities, academic challenges, behaviour). Teachers will be able to briefly communicate how your child is settling in and inform you if there are any early concerns noted. Prep parents have their parent teacher interviews in weeks 1 and 2 of Term 1.

Interview Two

These interviews (Prep – Yr 6) will be held late in Term 2. On this occasion teachers will do the majority of talking giving parents more detailed and explicit information around how your child is progressing academically, behaviourally and socially at school. You will also receive your child’s Semester One report around this time.

Please note parents are welcome to meet with your child’s teacher at any stage throughout the year. Please ensure you make an appointment with the teacher to enable this to be a productive meeting.

Email: Ensure you have your teacher’s email address and they have yours to further facilitate parent / teacher communication.

Invitation to our 2019 L.A.P. Tutors and Classroom Volunteers Information Session

Our school is inviting volunteers, parents and carers who wish to support our students with their learning, to participate in either our Learning Assistance Program (L.A.P.) or Classroom Volunteer Program this year.

Our Learning Assistance Program (L.A.P.) involves volunteer tutors supporting students with some aspect of their learning. This may be aspects of Literacy (Reading, Writing or Spelling), Numeracy or other interest areas such as Art or Science. This is a very beneficial program and has been in place at Maleny Primary School for many years.

Our Classroom Volunteer Program involves supporting students with many aspects of their learning e.g. Swimming, Maths, Reading, Writing and Spelling.

Volunteers who wish to participate in either or both programs in 2019 are invited to an information session and morning tea to prepare for the year ahead. This session will provide information on Code of Conduct, Student Protection, Asbestos Awareness, Reading and Writing.

Details are as follows:

Date: Thursday, 14th February (Week 3)
Time: 9:00 - 10:00 a.m.
Place: The Meeting Room (the middle room of our Innovation Centre).

Any enquiries can be directed to Jodie Kyte, our Support Teacher: Literacy and Numeracy on 5499 8333.

Swimming Carnival (9yrs-12yrs)

Our 2019 Swimming Carnival will be held next Wednesday, 13th February commencing at 9:00 am. Students should ensure they wear their Sports House shirts to promote their team. Please reinforce with your children the importance of reapplying sunscreen throughout the day and drinking lots of water before they leave home. We welcome parents to be a part of this day and encourage all children to participate. If you would like to assist as a timekeeper or tuckshop helper please see Mr Turner or contact the office. Please note only year 3 students turning 9 this year will participate in the carnival.

SWPBS (School Wide Positive Behaviour Support)

This week’s Rule: Be Respectful

Our Buzz Phrase: First Time Every Time (parents love this one, use it at home to reward behaviour when it occurs and you will see more of the desired behaviour displayed.)

Our school is a Positive Behaviour Support School. This means we teach our children what our rules and routines expectations are and reward them for meeting or exceeding these expectations. An important element is making clear what our expectations are. For this reason I have outlined some of our before and after school expectations below.

Before School Routines

Note: Supervision is only provided from 8:30 onwards, students are encouraged not to attend before this time.

  • Arrive at school from 8:30 onwards (Preps go straight to classrooms)
  • Students may go to the Innovation centre and borrow a library book
  • Sit in year level area until the first bell goes
  • After the first bell at 8:30 students may play handball on courts in year level area only
  • Running or hanging around toilet areas is not permitted
  • When second bell goes students line up for class or move directly to classrooms

After School Routines

Walking or Riding

After the 2:50pm bell students are to collect their belongings and move home promptly.
Bikes are to be kept in bike racks and scooters in area near staff room.
Students must dismount inside the school grounds, footpath and when using the crossing.
It is important students are respectful of all other footpath users.
Smile and acknowledge Lolly Pop Lady /Man (It’s Free).

Students waiting for parents in cars (arriving at 2:50)

Students are to wait quietly along Prep fence or behind Pedestrian Crossing area on School side only not on the fence across the road. Parents can park on this side of the road and students can then cross and meet them. (This is for their safety and a courtesy to our neighbours.) If parents are ever later than the time Lolly Pop workers have finished, children must move to the office, call home and wait there safely.

Waiting for High School Siblings

All students waiting for older siblings need to wait in the supervised area under B Block with Bus students. Staff will escort them out on time to meet siblings.
No students are to wait on the other side of the road near crossing.

Bus departures

2:50pm Buses

Students move promptly to footpath and wait along fence in front of the appropriate bus and wait for Bus driver to load students. Prep and Year 1 students are collected from their class and directed to the correct areas until they board their bus by school staff.

Students need to ensure they are not waiting on the walkway as this impedes pedestrian traffic.

Once loaded students must remain seated at all times and talk quietly.

Students must follow the QLD Transport Code of Conduct. Bus drivers will enforce this with a three strikes policy.

3:05pm Buses

Students move directly under B Block and wait quietly in bus lines.

Staff will take students and load on to buses just after 3:00, this coincides with the time High School students start to walk past our school.

GoodStart – After School Care

Students attending afterschool care must sit and wait quietly under the year 4 classrooms (computer room) where they will be collected by GoodStart staff and transported by mini bus.

After School Drop off / Pick up Zone (to right of pedestrian crossing school side)

Students wait quietly next to Prep school fence until parents arrive NOT across the road.

Students load quickly when parents arrive.

Students need to ensure they are not waiting on the walkway as this impedes pedestrian traffic.

If parents have not arrived before Lolly Pop workers have finished students move to the office and wait to be collected.

This is not an area to park and leave the car.

Have a Magic week in Maleny. John

From the Deputy Principal

Welcome back to the start of a brand new and exciting year. Welcome also to a number of new families to our school.

This year our main priority continues to be Writing, using the ‘7 Steps to Writing’ Program elements. Over the last year our school has worked on Writing, gaining further consistency in how we teach Writing from P-6 and also achieved great results in improving student outcomes by having a clear policy on how Writing is taught at Maleny State School. Not only have the teachers seen improvement in student writing samples but many students have gained a greater confidence in ‘having-a-go’ at writing. Students who previously groaned at having to write were now writing pieces at home and wanting to share them at school. The latest research around student improvement shows an important link on motivation/engagement as a huge contributing factor to student growth in learning.

At the start of any new school year it is important to establish routines and procedures both at home and at school and to be open in our communication between home and school. To help assist in this process Maleny State School offers a number of events.

Parent Teacher Meet and Greet afternoons: Each year level organises an afternoon session to inform parents of year level expectations, events and activities, commencing this week. Further details would have been provided in the classroom teacher’s Class Newsletter which would have gone home last week.

Learning Support at Maleny State School

The Support Teacher: Literacy & Numeracy (STLAN) works closely with classroom teachers to ensure that children are able to progress at their own level. The STLAN assists with planning, preparation and delivery of effective learning and teaching programs for identified students to improve their learning outcomes, with a focus on literacy and numeracy.

Assistance may take the form of either working with classroom teachers and/or children in the classroom, withdrawing children for short teaching sessions or advising classroom teachers on suitable programming and resources. Students who are on an Individual Curriculum Plan are included in these support provisions.

The STLAN liaises closely with other specialist services and the Enhanced Learning Committee. Intervention for students with specific learning needs is coordinated through a referral to the school Enhanced Learning Committee. The STLAN works collaboratively with other specialists (for example, guidance officers, speech language pathologists) to coordinate services which improve students’ learning.

Intervention programs are offered for students identified in Year 3 & Year 5 Naplan Tests. The STLAN manages support programs in collaboration with Literacy/Numeracy Teacher aides who support children with identified learning needs.

Hello! My name is Jodie Kyte and I will be acting in the role of STLAN at Maleny State School. I began working in this role in semester 2, 2018.

I will be working Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

A little background about me… I began teaching in 2006 after graduating from Central Queensland University and have taught at schools in Gympie, Kilkivan and now Maleny. Most of my teaching experience has been with years 4-7. I am thoroughly enjoying this new role and having the opportunity to work with a variety of students across the whole school. I collaborate with classroom teachers to ensure the continuity of your child’s education between work that a student may complete with me and work they complete in their classroom.

I am looking forward to getting to know your child and helping them succeed in their academic and personal goals. If you have any queries you can make an appointment to see me or send an email. My email address is jkyte2@eq.edu.au.

I hope you have a fantastic 2019.

Kind regards,

Jodie Kyte.

CHAPPY NEWS – Purpose, Discipline and Routine

Welcome back to 2019 everyone. I hope you’ve all had a wonderful break. It’s a funny thing getting back into routine and becoming disciplined again after such a long time of NOT being any of those things. I’ve realised that I am a much calmer person when I have routine and discipline in my life. As much as we all love our sleep in’s and not having to make school lunches, I am reminded of how much better and smoother my life runs when there is order and purpose in my day. Over the holidays I recognised how vital this behaviour was to me and for the first few weeks I couldn’t shake the feeling of restlessness and my inability to relax and be ok with just ‘doing nothing.’ As much as we all need holidays in our lives and the time and space to unwind, we equally need purpose and discipline. Without either, I know my life would look a whole lot more unstable.

Teaching our children the appropriateness of resting as well as the importance of having discipline and structure is a challenging process. For those of you who aren’t by nature very organised or structured, I feel your pain! However, over time I have seen the beauty in being organised and purposeful in my daily life. I can say that today I value this quality so much more than I ever have and find such admiration and respect for those who are naturally organised and logical in their thinking. I hope that you all have a very uneventful start to the New Year and your children settle into their classes quickly and smoothly. I wish you all the blessings for this coming year and I am here any time you need a listening ear.

CHAPPY ACTIVITIES…

  1. Games in the Hall – Monday (1-2) Tuesday (3-4) Wednesday (5-6)
  2. Breakfast Club – Wednesday mornings from 8am..Everyone welcome
  3. Mentors Needed… if you have a spare hour a week to invest in a child, please see me for more details.
