PRINCIPALS REPORT
Centenary of Armistice Day 1918
Maleny students and staff along with 100’s of Maleny community members made history on Sunday by re-enacting the Victory parade in period costume that was held 100 years ago in Maleny. On the eleventh of the eleventh 1918 the First World War ended and Australians across the country were elated to see 4 years of bloodshed come to an end and peace restored. There would have been few if any families at the time that were not affected by the war or who had not lost a family member or loved one on the battle fields. This march was held 2 weeks after the end of the war was announced and was made up predominately of Maleny community members, as soldiers and military personnel had to wait months before they would arrive home predominately by ship. The parade concluded at the Maleny State School which was farm land at the time.
A huge congratulations needs to go to Chris Brooker and members of the RSL who were instrumental in initiating this event and making it such a success. New arrivals to Maleny tell me they move here as they want to live in a town that values community spirit. I was extremely proud to demonstrate our town’s spirit by marching with students and staff from our school alongside other local schools and community members. I was certainly a momentous occasion and one that was thoroughly enjoyed by participants and spectators alike.
A side note that I believe is worth mentioning. Chris Brooker in his most persuasive manner asked me to round up 40 boys and 40 girls to be in the parade one Tuesday afternoon and added, “John, we need them by Friday”. Using my best management skills I said, “Then Chris I need you to talk on Assembly today”. Chris informed our students on our 2:20pm Tuesday assembly of what the parade was about and the significance behind it, low and behold by 9:00am the next morning we had filled our quota of students with reserves. So if you find yourself needing to sell ice to the Eskimos I suggest you give Chris Brooker a call. A fantastic effort from the whole Maleny community.

Volunteers Morning Tea
Each year we like to thank our many volunteers that assist in so many different ways with-in our school. This year our morning tea will be held at Tranquil Park on Monday the 3rd December at 10:00am. Please keep this date free as I am looking forward to thanking you for your contributions in person over a cup of tea.
Inter House Maths Competition
Our inter house maths competition will be held in the hall on Thursday 22 November. It is as much about team and school spirit as maths. Students will have the opportunity to work individually and collaboratively in groups to solve maths challenges. While students will work in year level groups teachers have spent considerable time in differentiating maths challenges to ensure individual needs are catered for. Students are asked to wear their sports shirts and join in what is sure to be fun. Presentations for House and year level winners will be held at a special assembly on Friday 23 November at 2:30pm.
Leaving Maleny SS in 2018
As we are currently organising our class formation for 2019 it is important that we are advised ASAP if students won’t be returning to our school next year. Please email or call Desley in the office.

Register for Prep now!
Prep information and transition days have now been completed. I am extremely impressed without soon to be Preppies and their dedicated parents that I have interviewed and met at our recent transition days. 2019 is going to be a great Prep year at Maleny.
It is essential that parents who have not contacted the office to register their child for Prep in 2019 do so now. Registration can be completed in a one minute phone call (Ph: 5499 8333) or an email to admin@malenyss.eq.edu.au.
Note: all students will require a birth certificate before commencing Prep in 2019. I look forward to meeting with you soon. If you know a family in the area that has a Prep eligible student for 2019 please encourage them to contact us immediately.
Maleny High School Transition
Yr 6 students will transition to the Maleny High School this Wednesday 14 November and Thursday 15 November.
Parents will need to make arrangements for students to get to and from the Maleny State High School on these days in preparation for the real thing in 2019.
Have a Great Week. John
FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
Year 5 Leadership Process for 2019 School Captain Positions
A large number of year 5 students nominated for 2019 School Captain positions and interviews were held in week 4, these students will now be short-listed. Students who are successful in moving to the next step in the School Captain process have now present speeches to the year 4 and 5 students on Monday 12th November at 11:30am in the school hall and will also present a speech to the teaching staff at their staff meeting also on Monday 12th November. We wish all these students the best of luck. Students who were unsuccessful in reaching the speech stage may still try out for House Captain or Music Captain Positions.
Congratulations to Solid Pathway Students
A number of our Indigenous students achieved excellent results in last year’s Naplan tests and were invited to take part in an extension program provided by the Distance School of Education. Each term the students are recognised for their attendance in the program. Well done to Hannah and Oliver for their great attendance. They received a certificate and medallion for their efforts.
Congratulations to the following students...
Well done to Sebastian, Chloe and Selena for taking part in the Farm Safety Calendar competition. They each receive a certificate and calendar.

SWPBL (SCHOOL WIDE POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR LEARNING)
Buzz Phrase
Our whole school Buzz Phrase for weeks 5 and 6 is a Be Responsible Rule - “I’m Great, I Wait”. Students will be learning about what it means to wait patiently when waiting for a teacher’s instructions, their turn to talk or while others are speaking. It is good manners to wait about two metres away from adults who are talking to give them privacy. If it looks like the adults will be awhile, come back later.
Our Buzz Phrase for weeks 7 & 8 is a Be A Learner Rule, “Big Efforts, Big Results”. This is timely as we complete our assessment for the year. It means that we show commitment, pride and a positive attitude in completing tasks. Students are expected to work hard, set goals, stay focused, and always do their best. They are encouraged to take risks and learn from their mistakes.
Rewards Day
Our final Rewards Day for this year will be held on Thursday 6th December.
Students obtaining 30 stamps on their 4 BE cards will be rewarded for their EPIC behaviour with a Movie Morning.
Students obtaining 20 stamps or more on their 4 Be cards will be rewarded for their AWESOME & EPIC behaviour with games in the middle session.
Students obtaining 10 stamps will be rewarded in their classrooms for their SUPER behaviour.
Congratulations to all students who have made it into our 4 Be Clubs. Enjoy your rewards day fun.
PREP A & B
Numbers, Numbers everywhere
The Prep students have been learning about numbers and number sequences. They have been matching numerals, pictures, and words as they represent numbers to 10 and beyond. They have also been sequencing numbers as they count forwards and backwards from different starting points.
Move it, Move it
We have had lots of fun making things with moving parts. We really enjoyed working in groups using the Make Do screws and tools to create a toy with moving parts. We have also had fun using split pins and other materials to make bodies with moving body parts and cars with wheels that roll. The children are busy designing and making an object with moving parts to show their understanding and learning about movement.
Mandy Bauer (Prep A) & Lindy Hicks (Prep B)
YEAR 1A & 1B
Science/Design Technologies
In week 5, students began to design and draw their scientific diagram of the musical instrument and puppet that they are planning to make. Their next step will be to write the procedure of how to make their musical instrument and puppet (procedure writing is what we are learning about in English). All students will then begin constructing their musical instrument and puppet out of recycled materials that they have been hoarding in our classrooms all term. If possible, please take the time to talk to your child about their ideas and design, to ensure that they have all the materials that they will require for these two projects.
Jo Dykes and Jeanette Vergens
YEAR 1/2C
Life in the last few weeks..........
Even though we are even closer to the end of term 4, we are still learning new and interesting things. We have enjoyed reading traditional and fractured fairy tales. We have been specifically looking at how story illustrations can be highly effective in conveying the same character in very different ways.
Swimming has run smoothly so far. The children thoroughly enjoyed going for a dip – especially during the heat wave. I can see how they have grown in maturity over the year as their ability to get dressed after swimming happened without a hitch!
We have designed and made our push and pull toy for science. Investigating forces and how changing part of our design can change the force it uses has been fun to investigate.
Jenny Jenkinson
YEAR 2A & 2B
We have had a busy term and swimming has begun. Remember that swimming is every Wednesday so please remember togs and towel that day. We have begun assessment for the term so it’s important that children come every day for learning the content as well as not missing the assessment which is used for reporting. A reminder that the inter house Maths school challenge will be in week seven. Lastly just letting you all know that Mrs Ferguson will be on leave after the 28Th of this month so if anyone needs to see her about anything please make an appointment as she will be on leave until next year.

P & C NEWS
The long awaited Country Fair is fast approaching, and planning is progressing for the day. Arm bands for rides are being pre-sold, and you’ll soon see road signs up again. Come along and enjoy some food, displays and music and make the 2018 Country Fair a great success. Can you lend a hand? There’s lots to do on the day – if you can spare an hour to help with a class stall, setting up or cleaning up please let your class teacher know or contact the P&C.
The Maleny State School bags have continued to sell and are available through the School Uniform shop and the IGA. They will also be available at the Country Fair. The latest print run of 500 bags was supported by a grant from the Maleny Credit Union and we are very grateful for this support. The students are again preparing art, this time for a Christmas theme on the bags – these bags will become available in the next couple of weeks.
You may have heard that the fuel station and fast food outlet proposed opposite the school is in final stages of consideration. The P&C has previously raised concerns with Local and State Government representatives about the proposal and its potential negative impacts on the school community. If you would like to learn more about the proposal, or if you share concerns about its impact please come to the P&C meeting for discussion this Wednesday, 14 November 2018 @ 6:30pm.
