Magic in Maleny

It has been a magic start to the term and I say very proudly that student behaviour has been excellent. A huge thank you to Mr Heiniger and staff that coordinated and conducted our Inter House Spelling Competition with 100% of students participating in week two. Congratulations to Warenga the winning house on the day. Last week on Monday at our Student Free Day, Maleny staff worked with Mapleton State School staff moderating student writing samples to ensure consistency of marking. This was a great networking opportunity for all staff to share ideas and strategies on a professional level. We also participated in professional development looking at the function of student behaviour, grammar in writing and the design of our future school and student intra net sites. Last week I was impressed by our instrumental students who went on tour playing at Montville, Peachester and Conondale State Schools. This culminated in the Instrumental Awards at the end of the day in which Maleny students did the school proud. This week eight students from year six will represent our school at the Sunshine Coast Regional Maths Tournament and our year fours’ head to Currumindi Camp on Wednesday. Next week we look forward to commencing our Term Four swimming program.

P&C Meeting –Ideas, Areas of Focus for 2019

At our next P&C we will be looking at budgeting and planning for 2019. At this time of year we like to reflect and review the year past and develop a new vision for the year to come. New faces always spark new ideas. Please come along to our next meeting to share your views and be part of not only the P&C planning but also have the opportunity to contribute to the school Annual Improvement Plan (AIP) and Explicit Improvement Agenda.

The P&C meeting will be held on Wednesday 14 November. Please come along at 6:30pm everyone’s ideas and support are welcome.

Save the Date for Country Fair – Fri Nov 30

Our Country Fair will now be held on Friday the 30 November from 3:30 – 8:00, what a magnificent end to the term. Pre ordered ride armbands are still available for sale and will be given to students on Friday the 30 November.

MALENY STATE HIGH SCHOOL – Transition Days

Transition days for 2019 Year 7’s will be held during Week 6 of Term 4 (14-15 of November). This 2-day event will be for only those students who have submitted enrolment applications prior to these days.

Register for Prep now! Don’t wait.

It is essential that parents who have not contacted the office to register their child for Prep in 2019 do so now. Please do not assume we know you are coming. Registration can be completed in a one minute phone call (Ph: 5499 8333) or an email to admin@malenyss.eq.edu.au

Note: all students will require a birth certificate before commencing Prep in 2019. I look forward to meeting with you soon. If you know a family in the area that has a Prep eligible student for 2019 please encourage them to contact us immediately.

Welcome to Prep and Transition Days

Don’t miss the last two of our three transition days to Prep. Students need to be enrolled to attend our transition days on: Wednesday 31 October and 7 of November from 9:30 until 10:30. Parents can order uniforms for students on these days. Parents must attend these sessions unless children are coming with GoodStart Centre staff.

Buddy Bench

Congratulations to our Student Council on making this initiative realised.

Through the fundraising efforts of our Student Council a ‘Buddy Bench’ has now been provided for students in the lower school playground area. The purpose of the ‘Buddy Bench’ is for children from years 1-3 to use if they are having friendship issues or finding it difficult to find an activity to play at play time that they will sit on the bench and be assisted by a mentor or staff member.

A special thank you as well to Mr Kronk who kindly arranged for the concrete slab that the bench sits on to be donated.

Have a Magic week in Maleny. John

SWPBL (School Wide Positive Behaviour Learning)

Student Behaviour

What a fantastic start to Term 2 we've had with whole school behaviour. Students are to be congratulated for their efforts to be the best that they can be and follow our school Four Be rules. The SWPBL Team is impressed by current data that shows a reduced number of behaviour incidences in and out of the classroom.

Buzz Phrase

Our School Buzz Phrase for Weeks 5 and 6 is “Look Proud, Talk Proud”.

This means that students wear the Maleny State School uniform proudly at all times – when they are at school and in the community. They will also learn about the importance of wearing a school uniform – for safety, sense of belonging, making everyone equal and giving identity to the school as a community.

Students are encouraged to be respectful and think about whether their classmates, teachers, family and friends would be proud of their behaviour.

Other discussion points will be learning about what it means to be humble, show humility and being able to celebrate successes and deal with disappointment.

We want everyone to feel proud that they belong to such a great school!

Year 4 A, B & C

During the digital technologies unit students have been exploring and learning about the uses of digital systems in our everyday life. Recently we have been practising how to use features in Microsoft Excel through various pre-set excel spreadsheet tasks. Students have been learning how to enter data correctly, use formulas to calculate data totals, manipulate data types and then represent their data into a graph format. Once students have developed their basic skills, they have begun to explore the various possibilities of representing their graphs.

During science this term, we are investigating forces. Students have been exploring the direction and effect of contact /non-contact forces on objects through games. We are remembering to use our P double E to Predict, Explore and Explain our investigations and record data from our games. Our science knowledge on forces is helping us to understand the effects of our actions. Here are examples of our game Whack it out!

Year 5A & 5B

Leadership Process

Recently students wishing to become 2019 School, House or Music Captains have submitted their nominations and their passport showing evidence of their volunteering or assistance. The next step in the process is shortlisting these nominations ready for interviews. Successful candidates from this step will then write speeches to present to the current Year 4 and 5 classes who will then vote for the various positions. Congratulations to the Year 5 students who have completed the nomination process and good luck to those students who are currently working towards the next step.

In Class

In class, students have just completed their Health assessment, which is promoting a healthy behaviour to their peers. In Digital Technology students are working collaboratively on their Scratch projects (coding), developing a maze game which teaches young children about a topic (Healthy Behaviours or What you need in a Natural Disaster). Later in the term student groups will share their maze games.

We are also very excited about camp, which is coming up in Week 8 of this term. Students will travel to the Mapleton campgrounds to experience various activities like rock climbing, orienteering, canoeing, archery, the Giant Swing and the Glider Possum. They will need to work together, communicate and encourage others in order to complete these sessions.

P & C News

Celebrate our Teachers and support staff of Maleny State School

Our last P&C meeting was provided an overview of this years NAPLAN results and Maleny State School has again achieved very positive results and continues to improve across key learning areas, reflecting the schools improvement plan and focus on reading and writing.

Last week the School conducted an inter house spelling bee, bringing fun and competition to spelling! It was a great activity with opportunity for leadership for year 5s, developing teamwork and cooperation across year levels and reinforcing spelling skills.

In addition to the academic achievements, the school musical performances at the end of last term were an outstanding success, a great credit to the staff and students involved and reflect a balanced focus for the school and offering for the students.

The P&C extends a THANK YOU to the Schools leadership, Teaching staff and support staff for the professional and personal commitment you make every day to our children and their learning and development. We hope all teachers had a happy International Teachers Day!

Next P&C Meeting will be held on Wednesday 14 November @ 6:30pm

War on Waste
Barung Landcare’s Special Gift to the Garden

The members of the Garden Club were so excited last week to receive our new native beehive donated by Barung Landcare. We all watched as the hive was opened and it was a tremendous experience to see the 20,000 bees come out to meet us. Our new bees will enjoy the flowering veggies and herbs in the garden. Thank you once again to Barung Landcare for your special gift and to Theresa Bint, the Office Manager for making this happen. The bees will be enjoyed by all students at Maleny State Primary School.

Playing

One thing I absolutely love about being a chaplain is that I get to play with kids. Don’t get me wrong - It’s not ALL I do but it’s a very effective tool that I use to build relationships and get to know children. I love games…all sorts of games, whether it be card games, board games, running games, acting games – the list is endless. I find games are a brilliant way to engage people and create an atmosphere of fun and purpose. Team building games are also effective and brilliant ways to connect people with one another.

One thing I strive to do as a parent is participate more in playing with my children, and it doesn’t seem to matter if it’s just a simple game of checkers or monopoly, kids love it. One of the best things about play is that it fosters a sense of joy and excitement. It brings happiness and fulfilment to a child. It allows those ‘walls’ to come down and makes our children in particular, feel that they’ve spent that quality time with us that they long for.

Games are a wonderful means of “breaking the ice” for our mentors. At Maleny there are almost 18 volunteers who mentor a child each week. Often, these beautiful volunteers will bring a board game in to play and for that one hour, the child feels happiness and excitement in playing with their special person. I cannot recommend playing enough. Turn off the TV and see how exciting and fulfilling life can be with your family playing games together. Hide and seek in the dark is one of my favourites. Talk about your favourite games and teach them to your children. Encourage them to find new games or create their own. Don’t forget what it was like to be a kid. So often as we get older, we forget how awe inspiring and wonder filled life can be. Don’t stop playing! Have a fun week everyone.
