Later this term we will hold our Inter House Maths Competition and Swimming Program.

We have two school camps organised with our Year four’s heading to Currimundi Beach (31 Oct, 1-2 Nov) and our Year five’s attending Mapleton Camp on the 26, 27 and 28 Nov.

Our school focus remains writing and maintaining a 95% attendance rate. I encourage families to continue to support students with their reading each night and staying in touch with teachers to see how you can best assist your children this term.

Students Shine in Pirates We’re Pirates Musical

It was fantastic to conclude Term 3 on such a high with the wonderful musical production of Pirates We’re Pirates. Around 100 of our students combined to produce one of our most professional and entertaining musical performances to date. I congratulate Mrs Shortland for co coordinating such an outstanding opportunity for our students to showcase their creative skills and talents. To the many staff, parents and community members that assisted in the production of our musical I can’t express my gratitude and thanks enough. I applaud David Shortland, Liz’s husband who wrote the play and composed the music along with controlling all aspects of the sound production for our musical. Our P&C did a wonderful job of ensuring crowds were catered for before and during the show. I am so proud of each and every one of our students who were the stars of the show and shone brightly both on and off the stage.

Have a look at the current available videos from the Musical on the playlist below:

Congratulations Michelle Bray on your Service to Education

After 21 years of service to Education Queensland as a Teacher Aide, Michelle Bray is retiring.

Michelle began her career as a Teacher Aide in March 1996 at Conondale State School where she completed a Teacher’s Aide Training course, which led to her working two days a week supporting students with special needs.

Later, in 1996, when Michelle’s son James was in Year 1, Michelle started working with Russ Trudeau in the Enrichment Centre at Maleny State School assisting other special needs students.

During her time at Maleny, Michelle also worked in the library for a year, replacing Val Hervey who was on leave. When Val returned, Michelle and Val shared library duties under the guidance of, Vicki Bauer and then Vicki Meehan.

In 2001, Michelle started working in the Maleny Preschool with teachers, Lynelle Boyle and her good friend Jan Gray.

In 2005, Michelle and Jan joined with Mandy Bauer and Cathie Thomson to provide a fun and exciting learning experience at Maleny Prep. She continued working with the Prep team encouraging and supporting the students until the end of 2017.

Michelle has worked as a Teacher Aide for 21 years at Maleny State School and her kind and caring nature has enabled young students to start their learning experience positively and build confidence in a calm and friendly environment.

Michelle has made many good friends during her time at our school and will be greatly missed by her colleagues, past students and families.

On behalf of the students and staff of Maleny State School, we wish Michelle a long and happy retirement.

MALENY STATE HIGH SCHOOL – Transition Days

Transition days for 2019 Year 7’s will be held during Week 6 of Term 4 (14 - 15 of November). This 2-day event will be for only those students who have submitted enrolment applications prior to these days.

2019 Classes

Class Preference Forms Due in by Week 3 Term 4

Please ensure you have completed a class preference form in writing by 26 October 2018 if you would like us to consider any educational reasons about the placement of your children in 2019. I remind parents that we are a relatively small school and most year levels have two full class cohorts, this does not allow for a great deal of flexibility around which class or teacher some requests may ask for.

All requests on time are considered but ultimately decisions are made by the school to benefit all students rather than specific individuals. We aim for balanced classes and a lot of time is put into making classes up by teachers who consider numerous factors including, academic, behaviour, social-friends, emotional, students with special needs, disabilities, physical classrooms, legitimate on time parent requests. Sorry late requests from parents will not be able to be considered. For requests to be considered they must be lodged on time on the correct form.

Any request previously submitted in a past year must be resubmitted again this year if you wish the same circumstances to be considered. Our staffing formula is based on student day 8 2019 enrolment numbers and as such it is crucial that 2019 Prep students enrol now to assist us with our class structure organisation. It is also crucial that if families are leaving next year they alert us now.

P&C Meeting

P&C meeting will be held this Wednesday 17th October. Please come along at 6:30pm everyone’s ideas and support are welcome.

Register for Prep now! Don’t wait.

It is essential that parents who have not contacted the office to register their child for Prep in 2019 do so now. Please do not assume we know you are coming. Registration can be completed in a one minute phone call (Ph54998333) or an email to admin@malenyss.eq.edu.au

Note: all students will require a birth certificate before commencing Prep in 2019. I look forward to meeting with you soon. If you know a family in the area that has a Prep eligible student for 2019 please encourage them to contact us immediately.

Welcome to Prep and Transition Days

Students need to be enrolled to attend our transition days on: Wednesday 24 & 31 October and 7 November from 9:00 until 10:30. Parents can order uniforms for students on these days. Parents must attend these sessions unless children are coming with GoodStart Centre staff.

Every Day Counts – Everyone should be aiming for 95% attendance or better.

Please ensure students arrive at school on time and attend every day. Excellent attendance is essential ingredient for student’s emotional and academic success. Late students are often our anxious students as they are unsettled and unsure of what is happening due to missing out on touching base with friends before school, organising their desk, books, pencils and belongings and important messages and revision work that occurs at the start of the day.

Have a Magic week in Maleny. John

From the Deputy Principal

26th October – World Teachers’ Day

Every day, Queensland teachers are making a difference educating and inspiring young people across our state.

World Teachers' Day is an opportunity to acknowledge our teachers and say thanks for the significant contributions they make in our classrooms and communities.

Celebrated in more than 100 countries world-wide, World Teachers' Day was established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in 1994 to recognise the role of teachers in society.

Queensland celebrates on the last Friday of October each year, this year it is Friday 26th October.

What you can do to thank your teacher

Ideas for recognising the important work of your teacher include:

  • Bringing them a flower/bunch of flowers from your garden
  • Bringing in an apple
  • Writing a personal thank-you note or letter
  • Completing a Certificate of thanks

26th October – ‘Day For Daniel’ - Recognise, React, Report!

The 26th October is also our Day for Daniel Walk. We encourage students to Wear Red and Donate a gold coin donation with all proceeds raised going to the Daniel Morcombe Foundation. Day for Daniel is Australia's largest child safety awareness and education day.

Our walk will occur on our school oval with all students meeting in the oval shed at 9:00am to walk proud in their red colours around the oval.

At 9:30am our P-3 students will move to the Hall to take part in a live presentation presented by the Daniel Morcombe Foundation. Australia’s biggest Safety Lesson has been developed using age appropriate evidence based personal safety education strategies for children ages prep to year 3. Topics covered include: Understanding feelings, recognising body clues, looking after by body and body ownership.

Year 4-6 students will move to the shed after their walk and the Student Council will present child safety information and skits to the students.

Our goal is to make Australia a safe place for all children.

SWPBL (School Wide Positive Behaviour Learning)

Buzz Phrase – Weeks 1 & 2

Our Buzz phrase for the first two weeks of term 4 is a Be A Learner Rule - “Leaders Inspire”. This means that students are positive role models, work cooperatively and encourage others. They wear the School uniform with pride and always do their best to follow the 4 Be Rules. Everyone can be a leader.

Buzz Phrase – Weeks 3 & 4

Our Buzz Phrase for weeks 3 and 4 is a Be Safe Rule - “Recognise, React, Report”. This coincides with Day for Daniel on Friday 26th October. Classes will be discussing how to recognise the clues our bodies give us when we are feeling unsafe; react by running away or yelling loudly; and report to adults – parents, grandparents, teachers, school principal, police. Classes will discuss the importance of always telling someone where they are going, what time they will be home, who they are with and if there are any changes to plans. For more information and activities visit the Daniel Morecombe Foundation website -

Prep A & B

We like to “Move it, Move it” at Prep. Our Science Unit this term is about moving. We’ve been having fun with various dance moves like “The Floss”, “The Dab” and “The Chicken Dance.” We investigated ways that our bodies move and why certain dances have these names. The children created and performed their own dance moves, drew them and made them out of wire.

We discussed the many ways that animals move and how their body shape and size affect their movement. We sorted animals into a Venn diagram based on the ways they move and noticed that some animals move in many ways. The children each created an animal out of clay and described how it moves.

Writing time has been all about letter writing. We are writing to a character from our daily story including a greeting, a question, a suggestion, sign off and an illustration. Make sure you have a look at our writing books next time you are in Prep.

Mandy Bauer (Prep A) & Lindy Hicks (Prep B)

Year 1A & 1B

Welcome back!

It’s hard to believe it’s already term 4! We have a busy term with a lot of work and revision to be done.

In English we will be exploring the language and features of procedural text in imaginative and informative contexts. Students will create a multi-modal poster for their assessment. In Maths students will gain a greater understanding of what half is and learn to identify half of a collection, shape and length. They will collect and represent data and classify outcomes of familiar events.

Students will also focus on learning a number of strategies to add and subtract including using a number line, ten frame, number sentence, counting on and the part/part/whole model. They will develop their understanding of how subtraction and addition are inter-related.

Our homework each week is aligned to our class maths work so it’s a great chance for you to see what we are focusing on and see your child’s understanding of the concepts we are covering.

In Science, Year One will investigate light and sound and will manipulate materials to see how light and sound are made. Students will be making their own musical instrument and will make predictions about how they can change the sounds that their instrument produces.

In Design Technology our classes will explore the characteristics and properties of materials and components that are used to produce design solutions. They will design and make a puppet with moving parts to use in a puppet show. We’ve decided on a puppet ‘Joke Show’ so later in the term the children will need to bring 3 suitable jokes to school for their puppet show. We’ve told the children to keep their jokes a secret so we haven’t heard them all before the shows start.

Lastly, in Media the children will produce an iBook using the iPad and Book Creator App and include images, sounds and text.

If your child is going to be away this term, please let us know in advance so we can plan and assess around this. We would always welcome parent helpers so please let us know if you are available.

Going Out with a Bang!

To say this year has flown by would be an understatement and there is no denying that Term 4 will follow suit. I find Term 4 to be one of the most rewarding times with a class but I do know that it will help if my coffee is strong and the students are calm!

The academic, emotional and social growth that has happened throughout term 1, 2 & 3 becomes obvious. All the students in 1/2C have started the term off in a positive manner and I am genuinely looking forward to spending the next eight and a half weeks seeing the students continue to strive for progress.

Each term we have a classroom saying that helps us maintain our learning motivation. Sometimes the students in 1/2C get really frustrated when they do not achieve perfection in their work, but the message they are receiving in the classroom this term is “mistakes are proof that you are trying”.

I am looking forward to continuing to work with you, to support your children to finish 2018 with a bang!

Jenny Jenkinson

Year 2A & 2B

Welcome Back to Term 4

We hope you have had a well rested break, ready to take on our last term of the year. Students have worked so hard this year on all activities, well done Year 2.

We especially would like to stress that students attend school every day as at this time of the year there is a lot of assesment to be completed ready for reports, please let the school or your teacher know if you are going to be asbent.

Hats Hats Hats....these are needed everyday, so please check with your child that they have one ready to go.

Resources are still required at this time, so a note will be sent home if they require resources for their learning. Specialist times have not changed this term, however Swimming will begin in Week 5 and would very kindly ask that we have volunteers for this: 2A Wednesday 9:00am, 2B Wednesday 10:00. Thank you in advance! We have recently sent home our term 4 newsletter, if you did not receive a copy please let your class teacher know. We look forward to a busy and successful term.

Special Nepalese Visitors

This week we were very lucky to have six Nepalese visitors join us in our class for the day. We found out about Nepal and looked at the similarities and differences between our two countries. The year 3’s completed a Venn Diagram listing all the things they found out that were the same and different. We found out that there are 45 students in a very small classroom and that boys and girls have their ears pierced when they are six months old. The Nepalese visitors went to other classes and talked about their country and taught the students a traditional dance. 3C got to try mo mos which is a food that is made in Nepal and it was very delicious. The year 3’s sang for the visitors and showed them some drumming also. Our Nepalese visitors even had a go. It was a very enjoyable day and we were thrilled they gave up their time to share their experiences with us.

How To Make Kale Chips

This week on parade we were very fortunate to have Indi (a garden club member) showcase her own cooking video on how to make kale chips from the school garden. Indi explained the procedure in simple steps and the garden club members were delighted to be taste testers giving her a score of 10 out of 10. Well done Indi.

Many of the students were amazed with the growth of some of our new seedlings after the holiday break and have started measuring our corn.

We are also very grateful to Barung Landcare for donating a native beehive to our garden area. The garden club members will be there to make a movie of their arrival next Wednesday.

Admitting Weakness

Welcome back everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday and spent quality time with your children. Welcome especially to all the new parents who have arrived this term.

I wanted to share a powerful lesson I learnt during the holidays and it has everything to do with forgiveness and admitting mistakes. Like most parents we have some days that we aren’t particularly proud of, when we know we could have handled a situation better or used more self-control. I had one of “those” days just before I was to take my children camping. In a nutshell I handled a bad behaviour demonstrated by one of my children in a pretty unproductive manner. Instead of calmly dealing with my child and giving a consequence straight away, I allowed my emotions to get the better of me. I knew in that instant that what I was upset about was completely reasonable and right, however the way in which I addressed it was very wrong. So instead of leaving for holidays on a high, we were all upset with each other and I knew I needed to own my own mistakes and bravely admit that to my children. Instead of beating myself up for what I didn’t do “right”, I used the opportunity to humble myself and admit what I could/should have done better. My children saw that I was able to say I was sorry for my own actions and understand that everyone makes mistakes at times.

Through my willingness to speak honestly to my children and address my own areas of weakness, I believe that I gained more respect and love from them had I ignored it, denied it or defended it. I encourage you today to be honest about your own weaknesses and allow your children to see that you are human and also have struggles at times. Keep being kind to yourself and forgive yourself and others quickly. It makes for a happy heart.

Have a great week

Chappy Becky
