Inaugural Fun Run Success
What a fantastic afternoon this was bringing our whole school together at the same time to participate in a fun and healthy activity. The children and spectators costumes, faces and laughter was our measure of success. I would like to thank our P&C for initiating this first time fund raising event for our school that raised over $10 000. An enormous thank you must go to Charmaine who coordinated the event and organised the sorting and delivery of student’s prizes.
I congratulate Mr Turner our Physical Education Teacher on his design and engineering in making the course along with all participating staff that ensured this was a safe, well organised and fun event.
The event assistant from CUA who has assisted in over 60 of these events remarked that our course set up could be a blue print for others to follow and was impressed with children having the options of being able to use slow lanes to walk, fast lanes to run, separate areas to dance or rest and challenge themselves on the inside obstacle course. Children enjoyed, meandering through, over and around obstacles, dancing up a storm, having bubbles land on their noses and avoiding being hit with dodge balls thrown by teachers with wide grinning faces and mischievous chuckles. The free ice block at the end of the day was certainly well deserved and devoured in record time by all children.

Father’s Day
A huge thank you to Mandy McMahon from our P&C for organising this year’s Father’s Day stall last week and also all of the parents that assisted to sell items. I am sure there were some great surprises for dad on Sunday morning. Children loved the shopping experience and put quite some deep thought into their purchases for Dad. This P&C event raised $1029 profit, fantastic effort.
Pirates! We’re Pirates! – Musical Tickets
Only 16 more sleeps until our magnificent Pirates! We’re Pirates crew take to the stage to present our 2018 musical. This is one school event not to be missed and only comes around every 2 years. So grab your tickets quickly, organise the grandparents, relations and neighbours and make your evening one that will be a lifelong memory for the whole family. Well done to all students and staff that rehearsed on Sunday, our final full dress rehearsal will be on Sunday the 16 September.
Tickets for our musical are on sale now at the office. (Wednesday 19 September & Thursday 20 September at 6:30) Food will be for sale from the tuckshop before the musical but all sales will cease during the performance. Adults $10 School Age Children $5, Under School Age Free.

2019 Classes
Class Preference Forms Due in by Week 3 Term 4
Please ensure you have completed a class preference form in writing by 26 October 2018 if you would like us to consider any educational reasons about the placement of your children in 2019. I remind parents that we are a relatively small school and most year levels have two full class cohorts, this does not allow for a great deal of flexibility around which class or teacher some requests may ask for. All requests on time are considered but ultimately decisions are made by the school to benefit all students rather than specific individuals. We aim for balanced classes and a lot of time is put into making classes up by teachers who consider numerous factors including, academic, behaviour, social-friends, emotional, students with special needs, disabilities, physical classrooms, legitimate on time parent requests.
Sorry late requests from parents will not be able to be considered. For requests to be considered they must be lodged on time on the correct form any request previously submitted in a past year must be resubmitted again this year if you wish the same circumstances to be considered.
Our staffing formula is based on Student Day 8, 2019 enrolment numbers and as such it is crucial that 2019 Prep students enrol now to assist us with our class structure organisation. It is also crucial that if families are leaving next year they alert us now.
P&C Meeting – We Need You!
Our last P&C meeting for the term will be held on Wednesday 12th September. Please come along at 6:30pm. Everyone’s ideas and support are welcome. Our Country Fair is in week 1 Term 4 so finalising the planning of this event will be a priority. We desperately need new parents to attend our meetings especially from our younger year levels.
Country Fair – Many Hands Make Light Work
Week 1 Term 4
We need parents to assist to make this event run smoothly.
If you haven’t been able to assist this year this opportunity is for you.
Lots of volunteers are required. Please register your availability with the office 54998333 or come to our next P&C meeting Wednesday 12 September.
Register for Prep now! Don’t wait.
It is essential that parents who have not contacted the office to register their child for Prep in 2019 do so now. Please do not assume we know you are coming. Registration can be completed in a one minute phone call (Ph 54998333) or an email to admin@malenyss.eq.edu.au.
Note: all students will require a birth certificate before commencing Prep in 2019. I look forward to meeting with you soon. If you know a family in the area that has a Prep eligible student for 2019 please encourage them to contact us immediately.
Prep Enrolment Interview Dates:
Term 3
Wednesday, 12 September
Friday, 14 September
Please Call 54998333 to book your 20 min interview with your child. Enrolment forms can be collected from the office or on the Web Site.
Welcome to Prep and Transition Days
Students need to be enrolled to attend our transition days on: Wednesday 24 & 31 October and 7 November from 9:30 until 10:30. Parents can order uniforms for students on these days. Parents must attend these sessions unless children are coming with GoodStart Centre staff.
Be part of National Child Protection Week (2-8 September)
NAPCAN invites you to get involved with National Child Protection Week this year and play your part in creating safe and nurturing environments for all Australian children.
The week is an opportunity for government, business and community to come together to promote the safety and wellbeing of children, with particular emphasis on messages such as:
- We all have a part to play in protecting children
- By building stronger communities, we are creating safer environments for all children
To get involved with National Child Protection Week, you can:
- Make your influence positive; start a conversation today about listening to and valuing the voice of children and young people in your community.
- Follow us on social media. Like our Play Your Part Facebook page (napcan.playyourpart) and follow us on Twitter (NAPCAN_AU) and Instagram (@playyourpart_napcan). Use the hashtags #ncpw or #playyourpart.
- Visit NAPCAN’s website at www.napcan.org.au for information about events in your area, to sign up to our newsletters, for copies of our campaign posters, and for additional resources.
And remember, you can play your part every day by:
- being kind to children and families
- looking out for all children, not just your own
- being a positive role model for children
- supporting families to get help
- stopping and listening to children
Thank you for playing your part.

Next P&C Meeting Wed 12 September 2018
It has been a busy term of fund raising, with the Fun Run on 30 August and preparations for the Country Fair next term being the biggest events. Throw in a movie matinee and cake stall and Father’s Day stall to round out the events. The Fun Run is a new event for the P&C and has been a great success in its inaugural year due to the great work of P&C member Charmaine. 2 students raised over $1000 each, and a further 4 raised over $500 each! Thank you so much to all of the parents and family and friends who supported this event.
A working group has been formed to deliver the Country Fair and we are hopeful of another great day and successful fund raising event. There are numerous stalls to be run, and activities to set up, run and clean up for this event. Will this be your one thing to help raise funds for the school this year?
But where does all that money go? Last week’s P&C Meeting endorsed a payment of $13,000 to the school, the second portion of a $25,000 commitment to support the learning and experience of our children at school. That commitment provides $5,000 to subsidise Year 6 students attending the annual camp to Canberra and the Snowy Mountains – an enriching experience with learning on politics, parliament, war memorials; with life experience of independence from parents and sharing a living experience with peers; and with new and exciting environments including parks, gardens and ski fields. A further $6,000 provides additional hours for Teacher Aides and enables greater individual attention to the learning needs of each child requiring additional support. A further $5,000 is earmarked for the junior playground, and $8,000 has been spent on interactive whiteboards.
In addition to fund raising, the P&C has approved the Year 1 excursion to Mary Cairncross Park as a part of Science and HASS curriculum. We also considered the 2017 Annual Report, which reveals a high and improving performance against many key learning and behavioural criteria for the students, and high level of satisfaction by students, staff and parents alike.
Thanks

Buzz Phrase
We are finishing off Term 3 with the Buzz Phrase - “Make Good Choices”. This will be our whole school focus for weeks 9 and 10.
Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own behaviour. This means that they try their best, are always honest and follow the 4 Be Rules of their classroom and the school.
When students are making good choices, they are being positive role models for their peers. Positive role models are organised, on time, look after equipment and belongings, solve their own problems and care for others.
Rewards Day
Students who have been making good choices will be rewarded on our Term 3 Rewards Day – Thursday 20 September.
Be Super students who have earnt 10 stamps will receive a classroom reward.
Be Awesome students who have received 20 stamps will play games on the oval.
Be Epic students who have earnt 30 stamps will watch a movie.
Congratulations to these students for their awesome efforts with positive behaviour.
Prep A & B
HASS Learning (Humanities and Social Sciences)
We have been learning about places and what makes them special. The children have been identifying the features of familiar places and have been busy drawing maps and making models of their classroom, playground, school and town. They’ve enjoyed looking at Google maps and locating places of interest in Maleny. We will be investigating what makes a place special to people and the ways that people care for places.

Year 1A & 1B
The last few weeks of school are always very busy. We have commenced our assessment tasks in English and Maths already. This week and next we will create a character that Anthony Browne can put into his ‘Willy the Wimp’ series which we’ve been studying all term. We will also write a retell of a cultural story. Next term we will be putting our retell into an iBook on the iPads for our Media unit. In Maths we have been assessing time, length, capacity and soon will begin to assess the children counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s up to 100. Our Health assessment revolves around looking at how we belong and understanding people’s feelings. We also have our Science and HASS assessments which involve our excursion to Mary Cairncross Park in week 9. If you are planning on being away over the next few weeks please let us know so we can plan around this in order to assess your child. We are still looking for parent helpers to come on excursion with us. If you can join us please let us know.
Jo Dykes and Rochelle Callard
Year 1/2C
As term 3 quickly draws to a close, it is hard to envisage all that our class has worked on and achieved over the past 8 weeks. We have continued to work on our writing skills – each student having their own writing goal to work on. We have also enjoyed giving feedback to our friends about their writing. Our poetry writing is coming along nicely, and we will have our published works on display in the classroom over coming weeks. We are all looking forward to our excursion to Mary Cairncross Park on the 13th September, 2018. Reminder information will be sent home closer to the date.
Jenny Jenkinson
Year 2A & 2B
We have enjoyed listening to many unusual and disgusting recipes produced by the students this term. ‘Crunchy Cockroach Stew’, Slimy Slug Slushie’ and ‘Horrible Cake’ to name a few. Students were confident in their presentations and we enjoyed listening to the Ingredients, Equipment and Method. In Maths we are focussed on Assessment at the moment in measurement and number. A reminder about any items for the upcoming Country Fair are always welcome. Please remember hats everyday.

Year 3 News
What a couple of busy weeks we have had! We had a fantastic excursion to the Waste 2 Resource Centre where we learned all about reducing, recycling and reusing waste materials. Everyone came away from the day learning something new and are trying to continue to implement reducing waste both at home and at school. A huge shout out to all the parent helpers that assisted all three classes on the day. In the classroom we are in the middle of presenting our written retells on the Lorax. What wonderful speakers we have! On an important topic we have Deb Price (Engagement and Well-being Teacher) currently coming in to all of the Year 3 classes looking at Protective Behaviours. So far we have covered two topics- ‘What does it mean to be safe?’ and ‘Stranger Danger’. Over the next month we will cover ‘Good and bad touches’ and Bullying/Cyber Bullying Behaviours’. We know that many children have been and will continue to be discussing these important topics with their parents/carers at home.

What a great day at the University of the Sunshine Coast
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all students, parents and family members who made it to the University of the Sunshine Coast on Sunday the 26th. Thank you for your support and commitment, thank you Mr Byrne for joining us and helping handing out medallions to the amazing place getters of the Language Speech competition. It was such a vibrant atmosphere of 600 young language learners from nearly 50 schools in the region performing their speeches in seven different languages. Brooke, Travis, Franklin and Aliea did a fantastic job in delivering their speeches to the judges and answering their questions in Japanese. Congratulation Brooke for being awarded a Highly commended certificate!

Club News
The Entrepreneurs Club has started with some students already beginning to print out their ideas, built through 3D modelling into physical products. The first off the mark was a collectible toy, a traditional spin top. Matthew (yr 6) has already started to look at alternative designs to improve this idea (thicker handle and decorative designs). More are being scheduled on the printer as the weeks progress.
Code Club members have learning how to code through the Code Connection app using Microsoft’s own MakCode block language. Students have had to master working in split screens, with multiple windows open at once, and move seamlessly between the apps. One big think learned already is that when coding small mistakes have big outcomes. Well usually nothing happens the way it is supposed to. Simple spelling mistakes or missed steps are not forgiving. Accuracy is king! Examples from Caelan (Yr4) can be seen below in 2 of the coding challenges he managed to master.

TRUST
Last week I had the pleasure of going on camp with the year 3-6’s at another school. We had a great time doing stand-up paddle boarding, team games, archery, rock climbing and so much more. I was challenged by the rock climbing as the technology has changed since I last went. Instead of having people on the ground belaying for you and holding your rope, there is now a single rope that the climber is harnessed to, that hangs from what looks like a retractable garden hose hanging from the ceiling. I immediately felt unsafe, placing my trust in a mechanical version of what your friends did on the ground. In fact I was so mistrusting of this set up that I was unable to climb very high at all, even though I knew I was more than capable of doing so. As I looked around the room, every child was confidently climbing the wall and falling back on the rope, completely and implicitly trusting the system. Inside I wished to be as trusting as them and just enjoy the climb, however due to my unbelief and fear, I could not go past a few metres and had to watch from the bottom. I found this a great life lesson. Firstly, children are quick to trust and therefore experience new things more easily than many adults do. Secondly, children are great examples of what really living in the present moment looks like. So often we are held back from experiencing new and wonderful things because of our pre-conceived ideas and experiences, however I realised that sometimes life is better when we let go and trust the unseen. I encourage you to let go of what you know and do something different and challenging this week. Have a great one.
