Call Desley on 54998333 to book your interview now.

School Opinion Survey’s due 27 August – Please Participate

It is essential that as many parents as possible respond to our parent surveys to ensure that the data we analyse is truly reflective of our entire school body. Survey information has been sent home (blue slip with your log in and code details) however our response rate of the 300 surveys sent is currently only around 19 returns. We are hoping for a positive participation rate from our parent body to gather the views of many rather than a few. Staff and Students from the upper years also participated in their respective opinion surveys last week.

Father’s Day Stall before school

This year our Father’s Day Stall will be held in the Uniform shop area BEFORE school (8:15-8:45am Monday 27th August - Friday 31st August). The P&C is assisting at the Maleny Trail Ride in the canteen Volunteers Required

When: Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 September between 8am and 2pm at Green Park, Conondale.

A fun event to be involved in. The Maleny Trail Ride is held every second year with all profits being donated back to the community through various clubs and community organisations. The Maleny Trail Riders are great supporters of Maleny State School. The more helpers we supply the greater the funds will be for our school. If you can assist please contact the office (54998333) or email Kylie McAuliffe llorac@outlook.com.au.

Country Fair – First Friday back in Term 4

Please see the flyer enclosed for a list of items required for stalls. Classes nervously await your generous donations to ensure their stalls will have enough items to sell and contribute to the profit of this event which is our major fund raiser for the year. This year we will advertise a different item each week and ask all of the school to bring in items rather than only the class running the stall. Of course any items can be brought in at any time and it is not expected that families would donate some of every item listed.

Australian Government Contribution for students travelling to Canberra

Our Year 6 students will be undertaking an educational tour of the National Capital this week. Students will be given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the National Capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship Education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $60 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion and has been already factored in to the total cost of this excursion. We are extremely grateful for this rebate to assist families financially.

P&C Meeting

Please join us for our next P&C meeting on Wednesday the 12 September at 6:30pm. New faces always welcome. Our parent numbers need boosting as we have some fantastic parents working extremly hard but they are few in number and more support would be appreciated. Our Agenda this week will be predominately the Country Fair on the 12 October and the School Musical on the 19 and 20 September.

Reading Tips for Parents – Non-Fiction Texts (excerpt from Reading Rockets an online website with great tips on Literacy and Numeracy information for Parents)

Many children love to read about science and nature as well as real people, places, and events. Nonfiction books present information in engaging and interesting ways.

Here are some tips to helping your child/ren learn how to navigate a nonfiction book.

Talk about nonfiction

Begin by explaining that the book you're about to share is nonfiction. That means that the book will give us information that is true. The book will be organized around a specific topic or idea, and we may learn new facts through reading. Some children even enjoy sorting their home libraries into fiction and nonfiction books. This simple categorization task helps your child understand the difference between fiction and nonfiction.

Look at the parts

Most good nonfiction books will have helpful features that are not a part of most fiction books. These parts include a table of contents, an index, a glossary, photographs and charts with captions, and a list of sources. Share the purpose of the features with your reader.

Table of Contents

Located at the front of a book, the table of contents displays a list of the big ideas within the book and where to find them.

Index

An index is an alphabetical list of almost everything covered within the book, with page numbers. Readers can use the index to look up specific terms or concepts and go right to the specific information they're looking for.

Glossary

Located at the back of the book, a glossary contains key words that are related to the topic and their definitions. These definitions provide more information about new vocabulary words.

Captions

Captions are usually right under photographs, figures, maps, and charts. Captions give a quick summary of what information is presented in the graphic.

Photos/Charts

A lot of information can be found by "reading" the charts and photos found within nonfiction text. Readers will first need to figure out what information is presented. Then they'll need to discover how to navigate the information. Some charts use clear labels, others require more careful examination. Help your child learn more about the different ways information can be displayed.

Nonfiction books do not have to be read from cover to cover. Readers can use the table of contents and index to jump right to the information they are most interested in. In that way, they are the "reading boss" of that book! However, if your reader wants to read from cover to cover, encourage him to use the table of contents to understand how the book is organized. "First we will learn about the different types of frogs. Then we'll learn where they can live, what they eat, and how they survive." Passages from the book can be reread as often as necessary until your child understands what is written. You can refer to pictures, charts and tables over and over again as well.

As natural learners, young readers are drawn to books that give information about something or explain something they've always wondered about. With a little help and guidance about reading nonfiction, you can feel good about introducing your child to a new world of information.

SWPBL (School Wide Positive Behaviour Learning)

Buzz Phrase – “Be Nice, Be Quiet”.

Our whole school Buzz phrase for weeks five and six is a Be Respectful Rule - “Be Nice, Be Quiet”. This means that students model sensible behaviour at all times. They move quietly to supervised areas, sit quietly and follow adult directions. Students are expected to be nice to others and think about treating others as they would like to be treated.

Buzz Phrase – “Bounce Back”.

Weeks 7 & 8

In weeks seven and eight, our focus rule is a Be a Learner rule - “Bounce Back”. This buzz phrase is about being resilient. Building resilience is the ability to adapt well to adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats or even significant sources of stress. We need to help our children manage stress and feelings of anxiety and uncertainty.

Students are encouraged to identify and manage their emotions, solve problems calmly, take time to chill out, talk to someone and use positive self -talk – I will be ok, I am ok, I will bounce back.

Year 4A, 4B & 4C

Exploring materials and their properties

During science this term, Year 4 have been actively involved in investigative opportunities based on materials and their properties. Students are discovering what it means to be a Materials Scientist, including making their own predictions, observations and explanations on properties of materials such Non-Newtonian fluids. Students are discovering why particular materials, both natural and processed, are used for certain purposes. This week we have been examining metals and identifying the meaning of their properties including malleable, ductile, conductive, mouldable and magnetic. Next week we will research how metals can be recycled and discover which metals used around us and at home are recyclable by observing their properties.

Kylie Hulm, Susie Hume, Kerry Lees and Kerry Hadson.

Year 5A & 5B

STEM and Light

In Science we have been learning about Light and its properties. Recently we had three university students visit the Year 5 and Year 6 classes to talk about STEM and how it relates to the topics we are currently studying. The Year 5 classes were presented with a real-life problem that the poor people in Malaysia had no light in their homes and as groups we had to come up with solutions on how we could provide them with light.

In groups we designed our own solutions for the light problem using a plastic soft drink bottle with water and a little bit of bleach in it. Our solutions needed to be affordable and sustainable. Some ideas included solar panels, LED lights and aluminium cans to reflect light.

Did you know that some of the greatest inventions were designed in Australia? (wifi, Hills Hoist clothes line, cochlear implant and the Black box for planes)

Also we have investigated light reflection with mirrors in periscopes and white light with Newton’s Colour wheel.

Language Speech Competition

The event to attract learners of Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese and Spanish, is scheduled to take place on Sunday 26th August, in Buildings C and D at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

The contest last year attracted over 600 student entrants from over 50 schools in the region. At Maleny State School, 11 students were shortlisted, and the students selected to represent our school are Aliea, Franklin, Brooke and Travis.

Thank you so much for all the students and their families for putting in an amazing effort working on memorising the speeches. They were all so good and made the selection an extremely challenging task. Good luck to all contestants!

EBook Digital Library – FOR FREE!

We'd like to make you aware of a very exciting opportunity that has just happened for the Maleny State School student population. Education Queensland have provided every student and teacher in all EQ zoned rural or remote state schools with a one-off eBooks Digital Library subscription for the remainder of 2018. The eBooks Digital Library contains over 25,000 eBooks, audiobooks and videos, including fiction and non-fiction reading material for students, which you can borrow and read 24/7 at home, at school, on your PC, laptop or mobile device. Some students have already seen the extensive selection and are excited to look at borrowing some eBooks of titles they really want to read.

Student access

Students have been registered to access the eBooks Digital Library . Students will need their school username to log into the system. If your child is unfamiliar with their username (Prep and Year 1 most likely) please contact your class teacher or come in and see Mr Greig in the Innovation Centre.

Based on the latest literature review the following guidelines are suggested for safe use:

  • Limit use to 2 hours per night passive entertainment screen time during the week.
  • Ensure good sleep management, powering screens down 1-2 hours before bedtime; use a light filtering app for early evening screen use.
  • Encourage regular physical activity.

Lighting settings for eBooks can be adjusted for night time reading. In the OverDrive app menu, Select Reading Settings > Lighting, and choose ‘Dark’ (white text on a black background) for night time reading.

Most devices now have low-light reading options for night-reading to reduce eye-strain. The articles below contain information on how to enable these features

  • How to read at night on your tablet, iPad or smartphone
  • How to use Night Shift on your iPhone or iPad
  • The five best night mode apps for Android to filter blue light
  • BlueShade’night reading feature in Kindle Fire tablet

Again, this is a wonderful opportunity to experience reading in what will be a new way for many readers. Our little library is only so big and being able to more than double the size of available reading titles for our students is just awesome.

For ease of access there will be small posters, dotted around the school and in classrooms, with details on how to access the eBooks Digital Library. We have also placed a shortcut link on the home page of the school website in the Quick Links section for easy access.

I would love to hear what books you have read and how it has worked for you. We hope you enjoy reading some great books!

Club News

In the last 2 weeks we have seen the start of no less than 3 clubs in the Innovation Centre. The Code Club (Minecraft Education Edition) has kicked off with students learning how to use a visual block coding language to give themselves amazing Minecraft powers and abilities or be able to control an agent to do their bidding in world. Check out the Youtube clip showing the MakeCode for Minecraft Tour to get the feel for what they are starting with.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=USSnEhmKnpk

The Entrepreneurs Club has also kicked off with a number of students taking up the challenge of designing 3D objects of their own creation and then having them printed. Students are all in the early stage learning how to use the Tinkercad online software. After practicing the basics it won’t be long before they are producing their own designs.

Lastly, the RoboClub Jnr club has started with a small group of enthusiastic Year 1-3 students. They are learning how to manage iPads and robots together, experience different types of robots, connect the devices and control them using simple driving tools. Whilst it is a learning curve for many of them they have been having some great fun. After 1 month a new cohort of students will be invited partake in the fun in the club.

Quick Links

For quick and easy access from home we have added to our school’s website home page links to Oliver (the Innovation Centre’s library catalogue system), Code Club’s Class Notebook, the Entrepreneur Club’s Tinkercad site and the eBook Digital Library. All can be found in the Quick Links section.

War on Waste

OUR NEW GARDEN BED AND BINS

Last week the Year 3’s went on an excursion to the Sunshine Coast Council’s Waste 2 Resource Centre at Bli Bli. The students worked on different activities and we learnt how to sort our rubbish to reduce landfill. As Maleny State School is part of the STARS program The Sunshine Coast Council provided the school with new recycling bins and composting bins for each classroom.

This week the students have been weeding our old garden beds and with funds raised from selling our bags of salad mix a new garden bed was added to the area.

Ranger and Archer’s grandparents donated a composting bin to the garden club. We now have six large composting bins that are being used to collect our fruit and vegetable scraps in.
