2018 Voluntary Financial Contribution

It’s not too late. The contribution for 2018 is $50 per child or $40 per child for families with three or more children enrolled at our school. Family contributions will be used to upgrade our technology resources (iPads, Laptops, Robotics equipment) allowing greater hands on access for all students in classrooms.

Principals Report

Parent School Opinion Survey - Please Participate

We Need Your Views

Our annual school opinion surveys commence this week. It is essential that as many parents as possible respond to our surveys to ensure that the data we analyse is truly reflective of our entire school body. Survey information will be sent home this week. We look forward to a positive participation rate from our parent body. Staff and students from the upper years will also participate in their respective school opinion surveys.

Fun Run – Please save the Date - Thursday 30 August

Thank you to all families who registered and gained valuable sponsorship that will purchase resources to benefit our students. This is the first time we have proposed this event and it appears to have been quite profitable even with a lower percentage of families involved than we envisaged. Another great idea that was brought to our P&C meeting by Charmaine earlier this year. It is now important we ensure the actual Fun Run is a success. It will be a fancy dress Fun Run with music and some obstacles to add to the fun. The more parents that come along and support the better. Students will receive their selected prize that corresponds with the amount of money they collected on the day. See you on the oval at 2:00 on Thursday, 30 August for some Fun.

P&C Meeting

Please join us for our next P&C meeting this Wednesday, 8 August at 6:30pm. New faces are always welcome. Our parent numbers need boosting as we have some fantastic parents working extremely hard but they are few in number and more support would be appreciated. Our Agenda this week will be predominately the Country Fair on the 12th of October and the School Musical on the 19th and 20th of September.

Country Fair only 9 school weeks away (12 October, Week 2 Term 4)

Each week we will be asking for donations of a variety of different items from the whole school – please give generously where you can. These items will be used in a variety of class stalls. We are using this approach this year to ensure items required for class stalls are donated and that we are not required to purchase them. This diminishes any profit made from stalls. While this is a great community event and lots of fun, it is our school’s P&C’s major fund raiser.

Shopping Bags on Sale at Uniform Shop

You can purchase our schools shopping bags at the Uniform Shop every Friday morning (8:30-9:30) for $9.95. They are also on sale at the IGA. Bags on sale now feature 5 of our students art work and are walking out the door due to the demand. Popular and selling well also are the original bags with the Maleny’s iconic bunya tree print by our very own parent artist Julie Hanrahan. A big thank you to Merrick our P&C President for coordinating this project, one of a number of new ideas that was hatched at our P&C meetings.

Glasshouse District Sports

Congratulations to all our students that will be representing our school at the Glasshouse District Track and Field this Thursday and Friday at Skippy Park.

Parent Teacher Interviews

It was great to see so many parents taking advantage of our parent teacher interviews over the last couple of weeks. These face to face meetings build on parent, teacher, child relationships and allow a more personal communication and information exchange around your children. If you missed this opportunity please don’t hesitate to make an appointment with your child’s teacher in the future.

SWPBS -

This week we are focussing on the rule Be Responsible.
The 4 Be catch phrase is “Quiet Feet, Quiet Mouths”
This means:
I keep noise to a minimum
I walk on concrete
I use a talking voice
I move around the school quietly
I follow adult directions
I model sensible behaviour
I give way to adults
I move quickly and quietly between classrooms / lessons
I return from play in a respectful manner
I leave and enter parade respectfully

Have a Great Week. John

SWPBL (School Wide Positive Behaviour Learning)

Buzz Phrase

Our School Buzz Phrase for weeks 3 and 4 is a Be Respectful Rule – “Quiet Feet, Quiet Mouths”

During transitions, students should keep noise to a minimum and model sensible behaviour.

It is an expectation that students line up and move around the school quietly and respectfully, keeping to the left and giving way to adults. This includes classrooms, line up areas, specialist lessons, returning from play times and entering and leaving Parade. By following this rule, we are being respectful to others and their learning.

School Wide Positive Behaviour Rewards

Students are well on their way to collecting stamps on their Four Be Cards to go towards this term’s Be Clubs. Students can earn 4 Be Tickets in their classroom, during specialist lessons and in the playground for positive behaviour.

Rewards for this term are:

  • Be Super Club (10 stamps collected) Classroom Reward
  • Be Awesome Club (20 stamps collected) Games on the oval
  • Be Epic Club (30 stamps collected) Movie

Prep A & B

Weather Watchers:

At prep we are having fun observing and recording the weather using weather symbols.

We viewed some different weather websites such as “weather zone” and looked at how they represented the weather on maps. Each day the “star of the day” enjoys wearing the “weather hat” and presenting the weather to their friends at prep. The children had to think about the different types of weather we experience to make a weather mobile and a weather collage.

Since the term has begun we have been practising our writing skills of "Show Don't Tell" trying to create pictures in our readers mind using the senses and descriptive words. We used some sensory experiences to get our creative juices going like making cloud dough and lemonade. Enjoy making pictures in your mind as you read our great writing.

Lemonade – It tasted fantastic. I love it so much and it made me want to drink the whole jug because it was so sour. By Mitch

The beautiful smell of the lemonade. I can't wait to taste it. When I drink it, it is so yummy. By Alannah

Cloud dough – Oh so scrumptious. It felt soft the cloud dough. Oh it smells so clean and grassy. I bet it would taste yum too. Such lovely playdough. By Hazel

I smell the sweet buttery air. I see the fluffy clouds in my mind. I feel like I'm going to fall asleep. By Sasha

Year 1A & 1B

So far this term

Thank you so much for making a time last week to come and see us for an interview. It’s wonderful to be working together to support your child in year 1. Even though the interviews are over you are always welcome to email us or to make another time to see us if you have any concerns.

Already this term we have begun to learn how to tell the time to the o’clock and half past both on an analogue and digital clock. Time is something that children can practice at home by noticing what time they are doing certain daily tasks like eating dinner, going to bed and brushing their teeth.

In English we have been focusing on retelling stories and making sure we retell the events in order and include the beginning, middle and end of the story. When you read with your child each day it would be great if you can do this orally.

Excursion

This term Year 1 will be going on an excursion to Mary Cairncross Park. This excursion aligns with our HASS and our Science units. In HASS we are learning about local places, how they have changed over time and how we use them and care for them. In Science we are looking at the day and night sky, how it changes and how this affects the environment. Our excursion will include a lesson in HASS and Science, a rainforest walk, a play in the playground and lunch.

We will need a group of parents to volunteer to accompany our students on the excursion. We will send a date claimer as soon as dates have been confirmed. More information will come home soon regarding this.

Year 1/2C

Classroom Capers

All 1/2C students are to be congratulated for their smooth start to Term 3. After an exhausting Term 2, a welcomed rest over the holidays and a busy start to Term 3, the children are coping well. Our poetry study has been embraced by both the 1s and 2s. We are currently looking at analysing the structure of poetry but soon we will be able to have a go at writing our own poems – how exciting! Over the next few weeks, we will also be looking at building resilience in the classroom. We will be creating a class visual catastrophe scale and discussing whether the reaction we give to a situation is warranted.

Excursion

This term Year 1 / 2C will be joining 1A & 1B on an excursion to Mary Cairncross Park. This excursion aligns with our HASS and our Science units. In HASS we are learning about local places, how they have changed over time and how we use them and care for them. In Science we are looking at a variety of landscapes and examining the ways in which people interact with different landscapes, investigating the daily and seasonal changes in the local environment. The class will consider changes in the sky and landscape, day and night, and the impact on themselves and other living things. Students will also represent observable features and share ideas with others about how the changes in the sky and landscape affect everyday life. We will be talking about the Earth's resources and the importance of conserving them for the future of all living things.

Our excursion will include a lesson in HASS and Science, a rainforest walk, a play in the playground and lunch.

We will need a group of parents to volunteer to accompany our students on the excursion. We will send a date claimer as soon as dates have been confirmed. More information will come home soon regarding this.

Year 2A & 2B

Another busy term ahead!

Year 2A and 2B have hit the term running! We are enjoying creating and exploring recipes and are working toward writing our alternative recipe for George's Grandmother. In Science we are observing the plant growth of Watercress and the lifecycle of the Mealworm. Reading Groups are continuing and we are exploring the 'Questioning' strategy in our rotations.

As we are heading into our Digital Technology this semester, we would like to remind all students that they require headphones. Also on that note could we please ask that you check that your child has all resources required for learning, Glue sticks and scissors are used frequently during the day. Homework has begun again and we ask that you keep up with the home reading and filling in the Premiers Reading Challenge booklist.

We also welcome our new students into Year 2 and hope you enjoy your learning at Maleny State School.

Sarsha Anthony, Jean Penny & Libby Ferguson

Year 3A, 3B & 3C

News from Year 3

We have been learning about Dreaming stories and Traditional stories from other countries. They have been focusing on identifying character traits and the message that is presented in the story.

This term Year 3 has been conducting a number of experiments and investigations to gain a better understanding of heat energy, types of heat energy and the way in which we can use our senses to observe heat energy. In one investigation, students were using their sense of sight to see how heat energy moves using food colouring and different water temperatures

The Year 3’s will attend an excursion this week to the Waste 2 Resource Centre at Bli Bli. We are learning about sustainable practices and how we can make positive changes in our school. We are already becoming experts on recycling and composting our fruit and vegetable scraps and reducing our packaging.

Kind Regards

STEM News – GEMS and Clubs!

Semester 2 is filled with a number of STEM related activities once again across many year levels. The Year 4 Saving Superman challenge came to a close with a number of teams being able to save the superhero, locked away in the kryptonite tower with their robot power rescue crafts they built. The Year 4 Arts GEMS students are coming to the end of their time with students now at the programming stage of their musical instruments made from recycled materials but powered with the Makey Makey system to create working instruments. The Year 5 & Year 6 RoboClub GEMS started up once again. With an additional cohort joining the original club members, effectively doubling our members, students are working hard at starting a robotic design to create a 'noise' machine after successfully creating some security systems (see example below) to prevent theft.

The Year 3 & Year 5 Minecraft education Edition Trial came to a close but we have been allowed to keep some licenses, so starting this term is the Code Club: Minecraft Education Edition that will focus on coding/programming. Year 4&6 students have been offered spaces. This will run for the rest of the year utilising an online learning space called a Class Notebook to access tutorials and collaboration spaces. Exciting time ahead for these students. It's no wonder it is feeling busy this term!

Maleny Makers

Continuing with the theme of STEM, parents with children interested in tinkering and making stuff may be interested in an update from this local group of Makers in Maleny:

"Maleny Makers is a new community group for all ages that seeks to provide a space and learning support for STEAM topics such as coding, 3D printing, electronics and more. The group has an emphasis on making technology accessible to younger Makers - so if you have a child that seems interested in technical stuff, we can help support their interests. A well-equipped Makerspace is in development and will soon be ready for access. In the meantime, learn more about upcoming workshops and meetups at the link below.”

https://malenymakers.org

Students from Maleny have been involved in events by this group previously and have loved the experience and learned some great coding and problem-solving skills. Check it out!

Cybersafety

Throughout the year talks are held with students on the topic of Cybersafety, Digital Footprints and general Online Etiquette. These are complex concepts that have a large number of facets that student need to learn about and continue to revisit to explore how they relate in different contexts as the kids grow older. As a parent it is critical to be involved and on the front foot as children grow to ensure they have a positive and safe time online, ensuring that all of the wonderful benefits of technology and the online world has to offer work FOR then and not AGAINST them. For more information on how to help your children and better understand all of the issue visit the Australian Office of the eSafety Commissioner, their excellent iParent site and their excellent Games, Apps and Social networking information and review site.

CHAPPY NEWS –

Ignoring Problems

I have just recently moved house and as most of you would know this requires a huge effort and a whole lot of cleaning. While some of you probably love to clean, I don’t have this same passion and find keeping on top of house work a really dreary and time consuming burden. I have been thinking about some incredibly gifted people I know who manage to keep a spic and span household, whilst raising a tonne of kids AND working and I am amazed at their ability.

One thing I have been challenged to do though, which I believe can make all the difference is to ACT when I see something that needs my attention…don’t just ignore it and hope it will go away, or hope that somebody else will sort it out. I’ve realised how important it is to address a problem the minute I see it. If I just took out a cleaning cloth and wiped up a mess the minute my eyes saw it, then the mess would be gone and I wouldn’t be left with a harder and bigger problem for later. How true this is in our personal lives. I’ve been challenged to use this same mind set for issues in my own life. How often do we see a problem in our attitude or behaviour that we ignore or make excuses for? My challenge to myself is to deal with things the minute I recognise them. If I have lost my cool with my kids then I try to apologise quickly. If I have had a wrong attitude or a judgemental thought, then I try to stop and ask myself why I am feeling or thinking that way. If I responded impatiently or ungraciously then I try to own my own behaviour. The longer I let issues slide and hope they will improve all by themselves, is only creating bigger and harder problems for later. I encourage you to address things quickly and deal with them as promptly as possible.

Have a wonderful week.

Thanks for your support.
