Principals Report
Garden Club Students Couldn’t Believe Their Eyes
What a great surprise for the garden club students who visited the garden after the holidays. All three garden beds were overflowing with lush produce and the snow peas reached to the top of the trellis, which stood higher than the tallest of our year six students. There was a variety of different veggies to try ranging from snow peas, sugar snap peas, purple and orange carrots, radishes and a variety of salad greens. The students are now in a position to sell some of their produce to staff members which has provided funds to purchase new seedlings and an additional composting bin for the school. The Preps will be visiting the garden next week to observe the plants and see where the different vegetables come from and to taste test some of the produce. Well done to our Maleny Garden Club Students, it’s amazing to see what you have achieved in just three months! We are all grateful for the fantastic leadership and coordination of the Garden Club by Mrs Walsh.
Fun Run Sponsor Collection finishes Thursday
This Thursday is our last day for students to collect sponsorship for the Fun Run. Parents will then need to select and confirm online the eligible reward that your child chooses. This needs to be done by the 2nd of August. Students will receive their rewards on the day of the Fun Run Thursday afternoon 30 August. All funds raised will go towards our new playground for years 1- 3.
We are hoping as many parents as possible will come and watch this event. Children, staff and parents are encouraged to wear fancy dress or dress colourfully to make the day as much fun as possible. It is not a race, but designed to be a physical healthy and fun activity.
Parent Teacher Interviews
Parent teacher interviews (years P-6) are being held this week. If you need to change your appointment time please contact your child’s teacher or the office to rebook a different time as the online booking window is now closed.
P&C Meeting Wednesday New faces Welcome
Please join us on Wednesday the 8 August at 6:30pm at our next P&C meeting. Our main task will be ensuring that our Country Fair organisation is on track. We will require lots of parents to assist with a variety of jobs. Please let us know if you can assist so we can allocate you a task this will help us distribute the workload evenly.
Country Fair - 12 October 2018 - Save the Date!!!
The Maleny State School Country Fair will be on again from 3.30-8pm on Friday 12th October 2018. Planning is well underway from our P&C and dedicated volunteers to bring this wonderful event together. This is our major fundraiser for the school and a terrific family fun day. There will be rides, class stalls, show bags, music, entertainment, lots of delicious food and fireworks at 7.30pm!
Our popular Mega Raffle will be a feature on the night. We are currently seeking donations from local businesses for our major prizes and would welcome any contributions / suggestions from families at the school. So if you might be able to donate a major prize or cash towards a major prize, a restaurant voucher, local accommodation or something special please contact pandc@malenyss.eq.edu.au.
Donations for stalls
This year we are going to advertise each week for a different item that we would like families to donate. We are hoping this will bring in a better response rate and ensure our class stalls are successful. As a family you may pick and choose which items you donate, we would not expect that families donate each and every item. Keep an eye out for which donations are required.
Peter Rabbit Movie
Thanks to the generous sponsorship again of the Maleny Apex Club with the support of the Maleny Film Society our P&C hosted a very successful matinee screening of the Peter Rabbit on Saturday. A special thank you to the very talented and generous local author Jill Morris who once again donated books she has written to all children in attendance. On behalf of our whole school community I would like to thank all P&C volunteers and parents that coordinated this event, assisted on the day or cooked food items. A big thank you to all families that supported this event which raised $800 profit for our students.
Arrive on Time and Ready to Learn - Schools starts at 8:50
It is essential that students arrive at school on time and have time to organise themselves for the day. Students arriving late are required to obtain a late slip from the office before moving to class. When students arrive late they more often than not miss crucial information at the start of the day and often find it difficult to settle in quickly. With only one administration officer this also blocks our office delaying parents/clients who are required to wait for late students to be processed before they are served. This unnecessarily puts staff under pressure at one of the busiest times of the day.
Parents can support students by:
- Making sure your children get a good nights sleep
- Give them a nutritious breakfast and food for lunch to fuel their brain
- Teach them to organise and pack what they need for school
- Have a regular morning routine and get up early enough to get dressed in full school uniform, have a good breakfast, brush hair, clean teeth, get organised and out the door
Attendance – for all absences call the absentee line 54998366 or email admin@malenyss.eq.edu.au.
Maleny’s Attendance Goal- 95 % Current Attendance Rate for the year to date is 92.8 %.
Every day counts please support us by having your children at school every day they will be the ones that benefit in the long run.
Winter Uniforms
Our kids look outstanding in their uniforms thank you.
Well done to parents who have purchased a school hat, black shoes, white socks and a school jacket or plain navy jumper for their children. It is getting cold and will continue to be that way for some time. I am proud of our school and my expectation is that parents show they are as well by ensuring their children wear the correct uniform every day. If finances are an issue please don’t hesitate to call me as I am very willing to assist you. The best way to stay warm on our coldest days is to wear layers. Jeans are not part of our uniform and should not be worn. Congratulations to the huge majority of parents that send their children to school every day regardless of the weather in the correct uniform. We very much appreciate this and see this as a sign of your support and thank you for the support that our staff give to your children every day.
Year 6 ‘Family Planning’ sessions
True Relationships and Productive Health - Sunshine Coast (formerly known as Family Planning Queensland) will be presenting sessions regarding Human Relationships Education (Sexuality Education) for our Year 6’s on the 25th July and 26th July. A Parent Information session was held on the 17th July outlining and discuss the topics to be covered by True Relationships and Productive Health - Sunshine Coast.
Uniting Church Garage Sale
Proceeds of this garage sale are being given to our schools chaplaincy service for which we are extremely grateful. Please support this event which will be held at the Maleny Uniting Church on Saturday the 4 August from 7am to 2pm.
SWPBS
This week we are focussing on two rules, Be Safe and Be Responsible. The 4 Be catch phrase is “Play Fairly, Cross Safely”
That means:
I will play fairly and for fun not win at all
costs.
I will cooperate with my friends.
I will take turns when playing games.
I will follow the rules.
I will share and show respect.
I will be a modest winner and good loser.
I will help those that are still learning how to play.
I will include all in games and not exclude others.
I will speak appropriately to all.
I will walk away and cool down by myself if I get frustrated.
I will seek a teacher on duty’s assistance if a problem arises.
I will walk my bike and scooter on footpath near school, in the school
grounds and across the
crossing, ensuring I always wear a helmet.
Have a Great Week. John

Reading Update
A Buddy Reading Program will commence this term between Maleny State School and Good Start Early Learning Centre. Partnerships are being formed with year 5 Maleny State School Prospective Leaders, the ‘Senior Buddies’ and some of the ‘Good Start Learning Centre Students, the ‘Junior Buddies’. The program will help; to promote a ‘love of reading’ and build an enduring partnership with both campuses, with the side-line benefit of promoting spoken language and emergent Literacy; and build student’s language and literacy abilities in six areas.
- Vocabulary
- Narrative
- Phonological Awareness
- Concepts of Print
- Print Knowledge
- Language Skills
The program aims to promote reading across the two campuses by partnering the older students with younger students and providing a time once a week where buddies can get together to read with each other.
- To promote a love of reading and the use of strategies and skills in younger readers
- To promote fluency and purpose for reading, as well as understanding the skills and strategies required, for older students
- To expose students from the Goodstart Early Learning Centre with the language and skills of reading that they will develop further when they come to Maleny State School to develop consistency of practice across the two campuses

SWPBL (School Wide Positive Behaviour Learning)
Buzz Phrase
Our school wide behaviour Buzz Phrase for the first two weeks of term 3 is “Play Fair”.
This means that students will be encouraged to play fairly and for fun, but not always to win. Learning will focus on cooperating with their friends, taking turns when playing games, and helping those that are still learning how to play a game. Students are expected to include others and speak appropriately to all. If they get frustrated in their games, they need to walk away and cool down or seek an adult’s assistance. It was great to see so many students playing fairly at Sports Day.
Enrichment Centre News
Every school day, in every state school, our teachers and school leaders are maximising outcomes for students with disability by engaging them in learning and developing their skills to prepare for their future. Making sure all students have access to high quality learning opportunities, focused on their individual needs, is a priority for Queensland state schools. Students experience inclusive education when they can access and fully participate in learning, alongside their similar-aged peers, supported by reasonable adjustments and teaching strategies tailored to meet their individual needs. Inclusion is embedded in all aspects of school life, and is supported by culture, policies and every day practices. Maleny Special Education Program (SEP) provides special education programs to Maleny State School students verified with a disability. At Maleny State School the SEP operates out of the Enrichment Centre, with a primary focus on providing support within the student’s classroom environment. The Maleny Special Education Program supports students verified with one or a number of disabilities, including: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Hearing Impairment (HI), Intellectual Disability (ID), Physical Impairment (PI), Speech-Language Impairment (SLI) and Vision Impairment (VI). To be verified in any of the above a student must meet Education Queensland criteria.
Year 5A & 5B
Start of Term 3
The first week of term 3 was very busy with two days for Athletics (due to rain cancelling it in Term 2), but we also started our new units of work. In English this term Year 5 students will be studying different styles of poetry (poems, songs, anthems and odes). Last week students had a short writing session where they had to create a new school anthem. Here’s a few sample stanzas:
Maroon, navy, gold with lots
of pride, |
Up on the range |
Maroon, navy and gold, |
Upon the mighty mountain
range, |
Deb Darcy & Eric Faulkner
Interschool Sport Term 2
In term 2, students travelled to Glasshouse to compete in Glasshouse Netball and Soccer competitions. For weeks before they trained, learned the rules and worked on strategies. A number of parents and siblings assisted us with training and umpiring and we’d like to thank them for their efforts.
Last term saw Maleny’s netball teams (A & B) compete in their NEW uniforms for the first time. Both teams played very well for the 3 weeks of competition. Their skill levels and confidence improved greatly over this time.
The Soccer teams (A & B) also played very well showing great sportsmanship and growth over the 3 weeks of competition.
Past Student Councils were the driving force behind the fundraising for these fantastic uniforms. The current students wearing these to compete thank you very much.

LOTE - Japanese News
Congratulations to the winners of the writing competition!
In the end of last term, students in year 5 and 6 have put a great effort towards entries to the Modern Language Teacher’s Association of QLD (MLTAQ) writing competition, with their beautiful Japanese Hiragana writing and great illustrations. Congratulations to Allira in year 5 for being awarded 1st Place in the Word Search division and Alicia for being awarded 3rd Place in the same division. Anika in year 6 was awarded 1st Place in the Book mark division. Excellent work!
Speech Competition at the University of the Sunshine Coast
The 2018 MLTAQ Speech competition is fast approaching and it will be held on Sunday, August 26th. Students demonstrating strong ability to perform the Japanese self-introduction speech in front of the judges will be invited to participate. Last year the competition gathered over 600 students from the whole of the Sunshine Coast region, from year 4 to year 12, competing in 7 different languages and it has been an amazing celebration of language teaching and learning.

Innovation Centre News
Book Fair books have arrived.
Thanks to the enormous efforts of volunteer book coverers, especially the ever willing and helpful Karen Webb, the books that were purchased from fair are now ready for borrowing from the Innovation Centre. Many titles that student would have loved to buy themselves but couldn’t are already racing out the door.
Saving Superman
During last term Year 4 students were all involved in a Technology design challenge where they had to design and a create a rescue craft out of recycled materials. This craft was then to be powered by one of two robots (SPRK+ or a Dash). Teams worked to collaborative design and build the craft and then program the robot / craft to independently move around an obstacle and push over the kryptonite tower and capture Superman before he hits the ground.

Chappy News
CHAPPY NEWS – LISTEN
Welcome back to Term 3. I hope you all had a restful break with your families. Before the holidays I had a very unfortunate accident…whilst eating a sneaky Red Skin lolly in my room, I heard a terrible crunching sound and discovered my tooth embedded in my lolly. Much to my horror, I quickly called the Dentist and spoke to the secretary who advised me I could either keep the tooth or throw it out. Despite my gut instinct telling me to keep it, I threw it into my office bin and found out at the Dentist later that night that I needed the crown. I immediately ran back into the school, in the dark and rain, hoping desperately that my tooth might still be in the bottom of my bin. Devastated, I discovered that the bin had been emptied into the recycling wheelie bin, and so with desperate motivation I began digging through the bin, using my phone light as the only means of seeing anything. Incredibly, after almost giving up and saying one final and desperate prayer, I found it!! My missing crown was found and saved me hundreds of dollars!! The moral of the story…always listen to your gut instinct and never throw anything out before thoroughly checking first. Have a great week everyone.
UPCOMING EVENTS…
Volunteers for Mentoring are needed! If you have one hour a week and can invest in one student for one year, please see me for more details.
