Attendance – Make Every Day in the Last Week Count

I have been very impressed with our student attendance this Term which is sitting on 93.6% overall and last Friday our single day attendance rate was 94.2%. It is important that students attend school every day including the last week of school.

Book Fair

Thank you to all who supported our Book Fair this week, Mr Grieg commented it was even more successful and profitable than last year. The school will receive 33% of all purchases made back in the form of new books. Well done Adrian Greig for excellent coordination of this event.

Bunnings BBQ – Is this your one thing you can help at this year?

The first Saturday of the holidays our P&C will be running a BBQ at Caloundra Bunnings from 6:30am – 2:00pm. We still need plenty of helpers, I think we currently have 3 and I am one of them. This is a great opportunity to raise easy funds for our school and is always an enjoyable experience. It has taken us a while to break in to this fundraiser and not one we want to drop out of. If you can spare a couple of hours to do a shift please email pandc@malenyss.eq.edu.au or contact the school office.

The Peter Rabbit (PG) – Saturday 21 July 2pm, tickets $5

Thanks to the generous sponsorship again of Maleny Apex with the support of the Maleny Film Society the P&C will be hosting a matinee screening of Peter Rabbit on Saturday 21 July at 2pm at the Maleny Community Centre. All tickets $5, on sale at the door from 1.30pm - under 3 free. Please come and support this initiative and spread the word to family and friends. We need at least 8 volunteers on the day to set up chairs, sell tickets and food between 12-2pm. Please email pandc@malenyss.eq.edu.au if you can help on the day and/or supply a cake/slice. All proceeds go to the Maleny State School P&C Association.

Growing Up in Queensland Survey

This year, the Queensland Family and Child Commission (QFCC) is leading the Growing up in Queensland project to give as many children and young people across Queensland a voice about the opportunities and challenges they face and what they need from policy makers, business leaders and communities as they take their steps into the future. Recently you would have heard the Premier and Minister of Education’s announcement of a state-wide survey to hear from young people about their experiences of bullying and cyberbullying. These issues will form part of this project.

The Growing up in Queensland project team is visiting more than 40 communities across the state to talk to children and young people, 7-18 years, as part of a series of school based focus groups.

We have been invited to host two focus groups with students enrolled in your school in grades 3 to 6. In total the project team would like to talk to approximately 20 students in each focus group.

All students involved will require parent consent.

Hinterland Combined Band Workshop

Students from Conondale, Montville and Peachester will join with Maleny students next Thursday 21 June to expand their knowledge and skills in a whole day Instrumental Band Workshop in our hall.

Semester One School Reports

Student reports for Semester One are currently being prepared by teachers and will be distributed in the last week of Term. Remember a ‘C’ rating means your child is achieving the outcomes expected at their year level. The biggest percentage of students will achieve this result. Please read the standards on the front of your child’s report card for a better understanding of what a specific grade means. Please don’t hesitate to clarify any questions you may have with your child’s teacher.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Parent teacher interviews (Prep to Yr 6) will be held in week 2 of next Term. If you need to meet earlier please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher to arrange a meeting. Parents will be sent an email shortly describing the Online Booking tool we use to coordinate our interviews. If you do not have internet access please call the office or see your child’s classroom teacher to assist you make this booking.

Knitfest- Outer Space Theme

Don’t miss our fence display made by all classes. It is out of this world and will be on display from the end of the last week of school as part of the Maleny Knitfest weekend.

Japanese Taiko Drumming

This event was well very received by our Yr 5 & 6 students learning Japanese. Students loved being active participants in the drumming themselves. Thank you to Miss Emi for coordinating this activity.

Winter Uniform

Our coldest weeks this year will come in Term Three please purchase a school jumper available from the uniform shop (or a warm plain navy jumper without logos, stripes etc., grey, black or maroon jumpers and denim jeans are not acceptable) if your child doesn’t have the correct winter uniform.

SWPBS

Please reinforce with your children the idea that we do not solve disagreements by being physical. That we use our words, walk away or seek a teacher to assist.

Rule: Be Responsible Buzz Phrase “I Choose to Defuse”

  • I say STOP if someone or something is upsetting me.
  • I WALK away from the situation to a safe place.
  • I TALK to someone I can trust.
  • I CONTROL myself and keep my COOL.
  • I can solve problems in a calm manner.

Resilience In this context resilience means that students need to take responsibility for their own actions. Regardless of what bad things we experience or others may do to us we are still responsible for how we react. It is not acceptable to justify our inappropriate behaviour as a result of someone else’s behaviour towards us.

Thanks for a great Term and your continued support.

Have a safe and enjoyable holiday.

John

Pirates! We're Pirates!

Over the past few weeks, many students from Yrs 1 to 6 have joined the Lunch time Dance rehearsals for our Pirates! Musical. Permission notes for students selected for the Pirate dances should be sent home during this week.

There is plenty of work going on ‘behind the scenes' in preparation for the staging of Pirates! We’re Pirates! Rewards Day

Rewards day is almost here…. Be Epic and Be Awesome Club rewards day is Thursday 28 June.

Be Super Club rewards are classroom based.

Congratulations to students who have made it into the Four Be Clubs. Enjoy your well deserved rewards.

Prep A & B

What a busy time we have had practising ball games, helping us prepare for the junior sports day, on Monday 25 June. It would be great if many of our Mum, Dads and Grandparents could come along and cheer for us, as we run, jump and enjoy different sporting activities.

In the classroom over the next few weeks, we will be working on a fun interactive story called "The Allen Adventure". This is a story about Allen, a young visitor from another planet, who is new to school and learning how to get on with his new "Earthling" classmates. The Allen Adventure explores social and emotional skills that children need to make friends and get on with others. The story gives us a chance to discuss what to do in various social situations. Some topics we will explore are: how to join in with others, how to recognize other people's feelings and what to do if someone is mean. It is hard to believe we are coming to the end of semester 1. Thank you to everyone for all the help in our classrooms this term. Have a happy and safe holiday.

Mandy Bauer (Prep A) & Lindy Hicks (Prep B)

Year 1A & 1B

This term students have worked exceptionally hard in their artistic pursuits in various community engagement activities. We completed a wonderful line art display for the Maleny show with many students also entering separate pieces of art work. Knit-fest is coming up next week and Alien Art has been the theme. We have all enjoyed exploring different woollen materials and seeing the Alien visions come alive in the process.

Reading

Reading continues to be a major focus in year 1. Both 1A and 1B swap our home readers every week. If your child has not brought a book home or is not choosing books at their level, (they should not struggle to read them) please let Mrs Dykes or Miss Callard know.

Class Help

We appreciate all the parent help that we have received so far this year. If you are able to spare any time at all in the future, please do not hesitate to contact us!

Jo Dykes and Rochelle Callard

Year 1/2C

Are We There Yet?

What a busy term we have all had. When reflecting on the amount of learning that has occurred in 1/2C over the past 9 weeks, it is no wonder our little ones are feeling tired. Throughout term 2, they have been engaged in many meaningful, creative and fun learning experiences. It has been exciting to see our year 2's becoming more competent in their use of the classroom laptops and the year 1's aren't far behind. I have seen great improvements in the majority of students handwriting presentation. The quality of 1/2C's narrative writing after regularly practising the '7 Steps to Writing Success' throughout term 1 and 2 continues to impress. I have witnessed persistence in the classroom when learning tasks are challenging and our class motto of "If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, try again" seems to be paying off! In the coming weeks the children will be involved in Under 8's Day and Knitfest preparations (time to get our craft on!). Thank you, parents, for all your support this term. I wish you all a safe and happy June/July holiday!

Jenny Jenkinson

Year 3A, 3B and 3C

As we approach the end of the term students are busy completing some final assessments. They have written their own procedure based on the book Charlotte's Web and they will be giving a presentation to the class. We have been practising for the up coming sports days to be held in the final week of term.

We took up a marvellous opportunity to be involved in the Minecraft Education pilot program, which has been aligned with our Mathematics curriculum. The students have thoroughly enjoyed this program. In Science we are working towards understanding the rotation of the earth, moon and sun and also looking at how this affects night and day and shadow formation. We observed how a shadow changed throughout the day and how it grew longer and shorter depending on where the sun is positioned.

Book Fair a rounding success again

At the time of writing this newsletter item the final totals are still being calculated. However, it looks like we have sold over $2500 worth of books. This will mean that the school will be able to keep about $750 worth of books to go into our library collection for the entire school to enjoy. As soon as these are processed and ready for borrowing we'll make sure all children know straight away so they can enjoy many of the titles that other children may have bought themselves. A huge thankyou to the parent community for supporting the Book Fair and our volunteers without which this Book Fair would not have been possible.

Year 4 GEMS – Digital Arts – Making Music sessions

Those students who are part of the GEMS program are well under way for designing and building their working musical instruments out of recycled materials and the Makey Makey system, which will enable the instruments to come alive and really work. Some students are starting the coding component to get their systems making music. The program continues on until just after the school holidays when students will be recording videos of their instruments in action.

WAR ON WASTE

The students at Maleny are making great progress with using all four bins in their eating area. There has been a great reduction in landfill waste and it is wonderful to see that the children are making an effort to reduce packaging in their lunchbox. This week the students from 3C wrote very persuasive letters to the IGA to request a RedCycle bin be installed so we can take our soft plastic there for recycling rather than down the coast.

It was very exciting also to finally pick our first bunch of radishes.

P & C News

The P&C has been busy in 2018 planning for fund raising events throughout the year. The first event was the mother’s day stall, which raised around $1,800 dollars for the school. Many thanks to families who generously donated items for sale, and to helpers who ran the stall. There are numerous events throughout the year – BBQs, Movies, Father’s Day, Fun Run – not to mention the Country Fair in October! They all raise vital funds to support students and their educational experience at the school. All parents and carers are asked “Can you do just one thing?” Your commitment to work on a stall, provide a cake, sell some tickets, clean up after the fair or any other thing will make a difference to the successful running of events, and ultimately to the ability of the P&C to support your kids at school. Please put your hand up once this year.

The P&C has produced shopping bags that are available at the IGA and the Uniform Shop on Fridays 8:30 – 9:30. The artwork for the first bag has been donated by school parent and print maker Julie Hanrahan. As plastic bags are phased out of shops this month, we hope that you can support the school through the purchase of a bag or three! We are also seeking a sponsor for the bags, which promote Maleny and the school’s commitment to sustainability. If you are interested in sponsoring, please contact the P&C.

The next fund raising event is a Bunnings BBQ on June 30, which is to raise funds to support Year 6 students attending the Year 6 Camp to Canberra and the Snow. Year 6 parents – Is this your one thing?

Merrick Ilett
P&C President

Uniform Shop

If you have one hour per month that you may be able to help us out in the Uniform Shop please contact the office on 5499 8333. Open from 8:30-9:30am on Fridays, bring along a friend and be part of our happy team

The Uniform Shop's regular hours are Friday mornings between 8.30am and 9.30am. Payment options are EFTPOS, cash or cheque at the uniform shop only. Alternatively, orders can be placed online at the link below by 5pm Wednesday for Friday pickup or class delivery.

Chappy News

Build Up or Tear Down

I just want to acknowledge the teachers and children who spent time making special buckets for me to celebrate Chappy Week. For those of you who don’t know, every class in the school made a special bucket to present to me, each filled with a note from every student. This gift meant so much to me, and I would like to thank the school for being so thoughtful and kind. One of my love languages is words of encouragement, so this particular gift of words was even more meaningful. Throughout my life I have seen how powerful our words can be in either tearing someone down or lifting them up. A proverb I read the other day said that the tongue has the power of life and death. What a powerful picture to think about. As I ask myself the question, “Do the words that I speak to my friends, my spouse, my children, create life and hope, or do they tear down and destroy?” I know for myself I have been guilty of both these things. In the heat of the moment saying things that I have quickly regretted and being unable to take those words back, has left me with the realisation that I need more self-control in using my mouth. A study I read said that for every negative comment spoken, it takes another 5 positive to undo the damage. I encourage you today to use your words to build up, to inspire, to encourage, to bring hope and make someone feel like they are noticed and valued. My challenge to myself is to always ask the question, “Is what I am saying going to build up or tear down?” Be a person who builds up. Have a great week.
