Principals Report

Maleny Show

It was great to see such perfect weather for our Maleny Show over the weekend. I am always in awe of the number of hardworking volunteers and the time and effort they give to make our show such an exciting and successful event. All of this goes on in the background generally before the gates are open and often goes unnoticed. To every volunteer and the Maleny Show Society I congratulate you on another magnificent show. Our school’s display was based on the theme ‘Agriculture’ and featured our schools ‘War on Waste’ including our recycling, composting and gardening program. Also showcased were some great art and writing samples from our students from Prep through to Year Six. A huge thank you to students and staff that contributed and coordinated this magnificent display.

Semester One School Reports

Student reports for Semester One are currently being prepared by teachers and will be distributed in the last week of Term. Remember a ‘C’ rating means your child is achieving the outcomes expected at their year level. The biggest percentage of students will achieve this result. Please read the standards on the front of your child’s report card for a better understanding of what a specific grade means. Please don’t hesitate to clarify any questions you may have with your child’s teacher.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Parent teacher interviews (years P-6) will be held in week 2 of next Term with the exception of 4A which will be held in Week 10 of Term 2. If you need to meet earlier please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher to arrange a meeting. Parents will be sent an email in Week 11 describing the Online Booking tool we use to coordinate our interviews. If you do not have internet access please call the office or see your child’s classroom teacher to assist you make this booking.

The Australian Curriculum – Information for Parents

It is parents, families and carers who have the most influence on their children. When families are actively involved in their children’s education, children usually enjoy school and achieve better results.

The Australian Curriculum website provides information for families and carers about their children and the Australian Curriculum.

The Australian Curriculum sets the goal for what all students should learn as they progress through their school life – wherever they live in Australia and whichever school they attend.

Download The Australian Curriculum: an overview for parents to learn about how the Australian Curriculum is organised, including information about the learning areas, general capabilities and cross-curriculum priorities.

At Maleny State School we plan, teach, assess and report using the Australian Curriculum. The planning resource that our teachers use is the C2C (Curriculum into the Classroom Resources) devised by Queensland State Schooling.

Year 4 A, B & C

The term has been travelling very fast and students are now in the midst of assessments. They have all particularly enjoyed the practical component of the Design Technology Unit, where students made their lunch item using old and new technologies. The taste test at the end was the favourite of course whilst critiquing their designs!

Classes are currently researching their chosen endangered animal species focussing on its life cycle, relationships with elements within its environment, identifying known threats and what can be done to assist its survival. Students have shown great interest in gaining new knowledge about some of our known endangered species.

Media Arts has been another popular unit, where students are creating a similar version of a traditional story on ‘Book Creator’ for a younger audience. Students are required to work in teams and demonstrate an understanding of and use of images, sound and text when creating their digital storybook. The results are looking fantastic!

Remember every day counts, with your child’s attendance at school, as we are learning something new every day and we don’t want your child to miss out!

Year 5A & 5B

MINECRAFT CATASTROPHE

(written by the Year 5 classes)

This term Year 5 have been building their own Minecraft world. We thought that it was simply about town planning and zoning, but we soon found out that there was another diabolical plan behind this exercise. For a week we planned where to place our buildings to make it beneficial for the community. Then for the following weeks we started construction on our buildings and creating our world. There were farms, houses, factories and industries, hospitals, resorts, high-rises, amusement parks and military bases to name a few. We had to ensure that we had areas for residential, commercial, green spaces, industrial and special purpose zones. BUT THEN… Cyclone Debbie hit (a category 4 cyclone). As the storm hit the town, citizens had to flee (luckily they were all actually in bed fast asleep at their own homes while Mr Greig unleashed his torrent of destruction. He was also the evil mastermind behind this disaster, along with Cyclone Debbie AKA Miss Darcy.)

The next day colossal amounts of damage from the floods ruined our world. Surprise and shock shot through us as we found that water had overtaken our land. House by house, property by property destroyed and drowned. Whilst some lucky properties and buildings survived the deluge, others were left deep below the rising cold water, especially the Coffee Shop which the owners could not even locate.

As the world flooded, only those buildings built above the height of 68 level survived. Many were devastated by the flash flooding, the result of Cyclone Debbie, who had mysteriously hit a second time. Shrieks of disbelief and dismay echoed around the computer lab as the reality started to sink in.

Buzz Phrase

Our School Wide Buzz Phrase for weeks 9 and 10 is a Be Safe Rule - “I Choose to Defuse”.

This means that students are learning to solve problems in a calm and controlled manner. They use their words when someone or something is upsetting them. They are able to walk away from a situation to a safe place. They have people they trust that they can talk to.

Students at our school are encouraged to do the High Five to help them to diffuse situations. They are also asked to think of five people who they can trust to report problems to.

Rewards Day

This term’s Rewards Day is Thursday 28 June. Students have been busy collecting stamps on their Four Be cards for positive behaviour and will be rewarded for each Be Club that they have achieved.

Pirates! We're Pirates! Musical

After School Rehearsals for the ACTORS in our Pirates! Musical have begun.

We would like to thank Bec Paltridge who will be our Director this year, leading us in all things Acting and Staging. The remaining Tuesday ‘After School’ rehearsals for Term 2 are Tuesday 5 June, Tuesday 12 June and Tuesday 19 June.

Thank you to Miss Dawn from Maleny Dance Academy who has kindly choreographed two dances for our Pirate Musical and to Miss Samantha from Pure Dance Studio (Palmwoods) who has helped me to create the Year 3 dance.

For students in Years 1-6 who are interested in being part of our Musical as a dancer, come along to the lunchtime rehearsals for your Year Level. The timetable for Dance rehearsals will be displayed on the music room door and in each classroom.

Development Cup Rugby League Competition

Recently, 13 boys from Year 5 and 6 travelled to Beerwah to participate in the Glasshouse Division of the Development Cup Rugby League competition. The lads played three games of Rugby League throughout, which was a huge effort, as they had no reserves. Big tackles were made, tries were scored, skills were learnt and all had a great day.

Maleny’s first game was against Glasshouse 2. The game got off to exciting start with Nizam steaming down the sideline to score a runaway try. Tom followed up with two tries, and when Lucas smashed over the line, the boys had secured a 20 – 8 victory.

The second game was against Glasshouse 1. Tom again dominated the scoring claiming two tries, while Ben showed us his speed and agility to step his way through the opposition to claim a four pointer. When the final hooter sounded, Maleny had won 18 to 12.

The final game was a nail biting affair against Landsborough. The score seesawed, with each team dominating for different parts of the game. Tom, Ben and Nizam each scored a try. Great goal kicking allowed Maleny to scrape home to victory by 16 to 14.

Tom was named Maleny’s player of the day receiving a prize pack from the NRL. The boys’ results are even more outstanding by the fact that no one in the team plays regular Rugby League and many of the boys were playing for the very first time.

Maleny were named winners of the day and will now progress to the next stage of the Development Cup taking on the winners of the Caboolture Division.

The boys would like to thank all the parents who came and supported them on the day and supplied transport to and from Beerwah.

Code Club

Year 3 students were invited a few weeks back to join into a lunch time Code Club. Held each Tuesday at first lunch Code Club is focused on developing their skills in Scratch 2 coding program. It is a visual block programming language, perfect for younger students to get started on their way to programming games and interactive stories. We had 27 children sign up for the club and all were well on their way to building their first interactive Rock Band! Already students are learning new skills like file management, naming conventions and general problem solving and de-bugging.

GEMS – Digital Arts

The Year 4 students in the GEMS Digital Arts group are well on their way to designing their initial ideas on building musical instruments. Lots of possible ideas are flowing thick and fast. Building starts next week of their working instruments made from recycled materials and some digital components. For some inspiration check out this Youtube video of musical instruments made with the Makey Makey system.

Book Fair

Book Fair is fast approaching. Only a few weeks now. The Fair officially opens on 12 June and closes on 13 June. Many books can be taken from the Book fair directly. Popular titles where all copies have been sold will go on back order and be delivered usually within 1 week of the fair. More details to come. Online orders are the preferred method for payment. However, card payments are allowed at the store on the open days.

National Simultaneous Storytelling

Prep to Year 2 students were recently treated to a visit from Candace who works at the Maleny Library. Candace came to the Innovation Centre to read the story "Hickory Dickory Dash" as part of the National Simultaneous Storytelling initiative.

National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country.

Do The Next Right Thing

Lately I have been thinking about how important it is to continue doing good or making right decisions even when I don’t feel like it. For example, if you have ever made a commitment to finish a diet it takes self-control and discipline…even when you don’t feel like. Sometimes life can be like a diet. You are waiting to see the rewards of your good decisions but it doesn’t always happen. In that moment you have the choice to either throw in the towel, and if it’s a diet we’re talking about then that may look like an ice-cream binge (not that I would know anything about this :) OR continue doing the next right thing despite what your feelings and emotions are telling you. Something I have learnt in life is that our emotions can sometimes be the greatest liars. If I always listened to my emotions I would never have a clean house; reasonably behaved children or even friendships for that matter! So often we want to just “react” in a situation…for example. Maybe it is an attitude you’re struggling with. Maybe it’s a person/partner that you feel deserves the ‘sharp end of your tongue’ – HOWEVER, choosing to do the next right thing despite how you feel is so character building for yourself that it’s well worth it. Often in life we don’t see the fruit of our work, but like a seed that takes time to grow, keep choosing the next right thing and have faith that one day you will see success and beauty in whatever it is that you may be battling with this week. Have a blessed and peaceful week and take encouragement that everyone struggles with this issue at various points in their life.

P.S. THANK YOU FOR ALL THE BEAUTIFUL WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT I RECEIVED THIS WEEK FOR CHAPPY WEEK. It meant so much to me xx

If you would like to set up a theme related activity for the children on the day you are more than welcome to participate.

We'd also love some help with face painting on the day.

Please let your child's teacher know if you can assist with any of the above. Thank you!
