2018 Voluntary Financial Contribution

It’s not too late. The contribution for 2018 is $50 per child or $40 per child for families with three or more children enrolled at our school. Family contributions will be used to upgrade our technology resources (iPads, Laptops, Robotics equipment) allowing greater hands on access for all students in classrooms.

Principals Report

Maleny State School Annual Improvement focus area

  • Writing

I truly hope all our mothers are spoiled this Sunday and find some time to relax and congratulate themselves on the wonderful job they do each and every day of being a mum. To all our Mothers in Maleny and to those that take on this role I salute you and thank you for the valuable part you play in our children’s lives.

Mother’s Day Stall

The P&C will run a stall each morning this week from 8:15 – 8:45 in the Uniform Shop. If you can drop in and help it would be most appreciated (Coordinated by Mandy McMahon). Many hands make light work and it is a lot of fun seeing the excitement on the little faces that are buying that special gift they know their mum will just love. Thank you to all parents that have donated gifts this year.

NAPLAN

Students from Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 right across Australia will participate in the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) next Tuesday 15, Wednesday 16 and Thursday 17 May. Students will take the 2018 NAPLAN tests with Friday being a make-up day. NAPLAN assesses skills in literacy and numeracy that are developed over time, through the school curriculum. NAPLAN is not a pass or fail type test, but rather shows how students are progressing in numeracy and literacy skills against national standards for all Australian children at a point in time. Our students are well prepared by our staff for these tests and as a result we don’t see any of the stress and anxiety sometimes reported in the media. The diagnostic information that these tests provide on individual students allows us to plan future learning episodes for individual students to support areas of strength and challenge. If you have any concerns please don’t hesitate to give me a call.

For information about participation in NAPLAN, you can go to the link below.

http://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/parent-carersupport.html

In our last newsletter I expressed my views on NAPLAN encouraging a high participation rate from our students to help provide us with diagnostic data on individual and groups of students which assists us to inform our future strategic teaching and planning.

How you can help your child do their best the night before and day of NAPLAN.

  1. Ensure children go to bed early each night in the lead up.
  2. Give them a healthy breakfast.
  3. Arriving early to school will ensure students are organised and well settled before tests commence.
  4. Don’t make a big deal of NAPLAN or put pressure on students to perform well. Just tell them to try their best.

Country Fair - Volunteers Required

This year’s Country Fair will be held on Friday 12 October. Our Country Fair is the P&C’s main fundraiser of the year and our goal is to raise over $10 000. To do this we desperately need many volunteers to spread the workload. It is not necessary for volunteers to attend any meetings if they do not wish to. Our committee is currently dividing up the jobs that are required to organise this event and are looking for parents to volunteer to take responsibility for doing these. Volunteers are required leading up to the event and during the event. I would hope that every family can contribute and help out in some way. If you can assist please contact the office and we will be in touch or come along to this Wednesday’s P&C meeting. We welcome new ideas for stalls.

P&C Meeting Wed 9 May

Please join us this Wednesday evening at 6:30pm, an update will be provided on the proposed service station application across from the school and Country Fair organisation will be discussed.

New Play equipment for Year 1-3

Thanks to our P&C our Year 1-3 students have some new gymnastics equipment to play with at lunch times. Children are excited to play with the Commonwealth Games inspired gymnastics equipment below.

School Bus Service (Prep and Year 1)

It is great to see so many children using our local bus services. Be aware that all Prep and Year 1 students are collected by a staff member at the end of each day and put on the bus to ensure they are safe/don’t miss the bus. The correct modelled behaviour of catching the bus is taught so students can learn to catch the bus independently by Year 2. Younger students arriving early on the bus are encouraged to wait in the office if their bus arrives before 8:30.

It is vital that if parents change bus arrangements they advise the office and the class teacher in writing (not through the student) on that day. This prevents students getting anxious and mixed up at the end of the day when a split second decision sometimes needs to be made of whether the student is on the bus or not.

All students catching the later buses meet under B Block and are supervised and put on the bus by staff.

ANZAC Day

Congratulations to all who participated in this year’s ANZAC Day commemorations. I was very impressed with the behaviour and attitude shown by our students at both our school and ANZAC Day services. I received a number of commendations on the excellent behaviour of our students and how beautifully our school captains spoke giving their address at the main RSL service.

Year 1 Fire Education visits by Maleny Fire Brigade:

Every year the Maleny Fire Fighters present fire safety presentations to our year one students. All year one students excitedly participated in these presentations last week. A big thank you to our local Fire Fighters for this informative and entertaining session which our students thoroughly enjoyed. It is a great reminder for us all to discuss our Fire Plans with our families and to check that our smoke/heat alarms are operational. Remember to teach ‘Get down Low and Go, Go, Go’. The following link was provided with information about fire safety.

Traffic Safety

The bus drivers who pull up at the front of the school have indicated that a number of parents, with and without children, are dangerously walking between parked traffic to cross the road. Please use the crossing as it is supervised with a crossing supervisor for your safety.

Parking Safety

A reminder that the Enrichment Centre carpark has very limited parking, therefore it is for use by parents whose children use the facilities of the centre.

Writing's importance!

Phonics and phonological awareness in the teaching and learning of reading in the early years of schooling is often the first thing people think about as being important. The significance of developing writing alongside these skills, is equally important.

One of the best ways of developing ‘phonological awareness’ in young children is via the motivation to write. Getting students to want to write in a fun way and putting 'pen to paper' or 'fingers to keys' and understanding that writing holds a message and has a purpose is a great stepping stone to early literacy skills.

Given a strong oral language phonological foundation, and good oral language skills, most children will learn the alphabetic code quite quickly, and will be able to recode simple regularly spelled words to sound during the first year of schooling.

So pick up a pen, grab a keyboard or iPad with your children and explore the many different writing forms that can open up their world!

Contact Details – Do we have your most up to date contact details?

There are times when we may need to contact parents and carers. Do we have your most up to date contact details? If not, please contact the school on 5499 8333 so we can update our records. These details include parent/carers’ name, address, phone numbers, email address and emergency contact details. Please remember to contact the school if any of these details change.

SWPBL (School Wide Positive Behaviour Learning)

Student Behaviour

What a fantastic start to Term 2 we've had with whole school behaviour. Students are to be congratulated for their efforts to be the best that they can be and follow our school Four Be Rules. The SWPBL Team is impressed by current data that shows a reduced number of behaviour incidences in and out of the classroom.

Buzz Phrase

Our School Buzz Phrase for Weeks 5 and 6 is “Look Proud, Talk Proud”.

This means that students wear the Maleny State School uniform proudly at all times – when they are at school and in the community. They will also learn about the importance of wearing a school uniform – for safety, sense of belonging, making everyone equal and giving identity to the school as a community.

Students are encouraged to be respectful and think about whether their classmates, teachers, family and friends would be proud of their behaviour.

Other discussion points will be learning about what it means to be humble, show humility and being able to celebrate successes and deal with disappointment.

We want everyone to feel proud that they belong to such a great school!

Year 4 A, B & C

Students have settled back well into Term 2 and it is full steam ahead. In Media Arts students are busily planning storyboards for their Digital Children’s Book Assessment. They are quite excited and doing a great job so far, planning out image designs, audio effects and text selections for their version of a story called The Shark and the Turtle. Soon students will be onto the final phase on ipad compiling their stories digitally on an App called Book Creator.

In Science students have been exploring life cycles and food chains. Recently each student has planted a bean seed to monitor its’ changes and growth, observing and recording their findings as the seed sprouts and grows. Thank-you to families who have been able to donate items to our school’s Mother’s Day Stall. The students love the experience of being able to going shopping and purchase something special for their loved ones.

Kind regards,
Kylie Hulm, Susie Hume (4A), Kerry Lees (4B) and Kerry Hadson (4C).

Year 5A & 5B

TERM 2 in Year 5

Although we have 11 weeks in Term 2, it will be very busy. We've already had 2 short weeks, Cross Country and we still have all of our work to complete for Semester 1 report cards, the Mother's Day Stall, NAPLAN (in Week 5), Athletics Carnival and some students will be involved in Friday afternoon sport - Netball or Soccer and District Trials.

In the first few weeks of this term we have started our Science projects - researching our solar system. We are especially looking forward to testing our Space Landers in week 5. The Space Landers will be handmade containers/boxes or coverings designed to protect a raw egg from breaking after being dropped from the two balconies outside our rooms. Stay tuned for the photos of our test landings. Also we have started our next HASS unit where we will investigate town planning and zoning in our own world in Minecraft.

CONGRATULATIONS

We'd also like to congratulate Seanna for being selected to represent Queensland (in Swimming) at the Nationals in Hobart next term.

Pirates! We’re Pirates! Musical

Thank you to those parents, grandparents and staff members who are busily helping me create sets and props, source and make costumes, work with students to learn and act the script, and to those people working on the many organisational details, which go along with a project this large. If you think you may have a few hours spare it’s not too late to volunteer your time!

Can you sew? We need help with sewing of a number of simple costumes.

Under 8's Day

Our school will be celebrating Under 8's Day on Wednesday 20 June from 9:00 am – 10:30 am. This year's theme is "Children Exploring Language and Culture".

This will be a free event for all children and families in the community to enjoy a morning of interactive experiences - craft, music, stories, dress ups, art, flags, face-painting, construction, photos, obstacle course and more! They may even get to explore the inside of some emergency service vehicles.

Some things to know:

  • Prep – Year 2 children are all participating.
  • All school children will start in their classroom so rolls can be marked first.
  • School uniforms are to be worn on the day.
  • It would be great to have lots of parents attend as there will be lots of children moving around the Early Years play areas.

Donations Required:

Plastic shopping bags, socks, paper towel rolls, boxes for box construction (all sizes), beads and playdough. Please send into your child’s teacher.

How you can help:

We are looking for dress ups from around the world. If anyone has any cultural items, props or clothing that could be shared with us for the day it would be greatly appreciated.

If you would like to set up a theme related activity for the children on the day you are more than welcome to participate.

We'd also love some help with face painting on the day.

Please let your child's teacher know if you can assist with any of the above. Thank you!

War on Waste

Garden Flourishes with School's Compost

Over the holidays our first lot of compost was added to our two garden beds and our seedlings were planted. We have a variety of vegetables, salad leaves and herbs growing and it has been great to see new growth.

All areas of the school have soft plastic bins in place so the students are becoming more familiar with how much waste we can recycle. We have dropped off 6 garbage bags of soft plastic to the Redcycle bins at Coles. This week we will complete our waste audit for the Sunshine Coast Council. Three classes have volunteered to monitor their waste in their class over three days. The Council will then give us feedback on how we are progressing.

Last week our school received some good news that our grant application with the Maleny Rotary Club was successful and they have agreed to donate $900 towards our recycling, garden and compost system. We are hoping to buy a fourth compost tumbling bin to help with the turnover of compost we are producing from our fruit and vegetable scraps.

Book Covering

With the new term starting and with some generous community members donating books to the school on ANZAC Day we are ready to do some book covering to protect the wonderful books we have received. If you are able to offer any time to the school to come in and cover some books, either on site or even taking books home to cover them, please come in and see the staff and we will get you going. Mrs Shelley provides any training you may need if you want to brush up on your book covering skills. We supply all materials to cover the books in. Come in and let us know what you may be thinking and we'll work out a way to get the books covered and into the hands of the eager kids wanting to borrow some of our new collection.

Saving Superman

Year 4 classes this term are honing their super power design and coding skills in their challenge to design, build and use a coded robot (Sphero SPRK+ or Dash Robot) to power their rescue craft to save Superman on top of a kryptonite tower. Children have split up into teams to start their plans of developing a rescue craft made out of recycled materials. It is awesome to see students making plans, even during their lunch time to be the hero to save Superman. Over the coming weeks designing, building and coding will occur with the aim to Save Superman before next school holidays. The challenge is a tough one. It will require teamwork, persistence and good old problem solving to overcome the insurmountable hurdle they have taken on.

Over the last 2 years, students at Maleny have been inspired by the following Youtube clip of the challenge at another local school. Students are super excited (no pun intended) to see if their team will be the heroes of the day!

LOVE YOUR FAMILY

Sometimes the most important things are right under our noses, and sadly we can so often fail to see them. I read a quote the other day that said, “If you want to change the world, go home and love your family.” So often we undervalue our roles as parents. I remember when I first had my children I was at home changing dirty nappies, making bottles, sleepless nights, doing the washing and having no social life and I began to dream of career and other more “exciting” things I could have been doing with my time. My mother in law spoke so honestly to me one day and reminded me that the most important job I could ever have in this life time was to be a parent. Her wisdom has never left me and I often think about the profound truth of her statement. It is such a discipline to spend quality time with our children and I find that I sometimes prioritise working over playing with them, but I have made a rule with myself that while-ever my kids WANT to spend time with me and WANT me to play that game with them, then I will stop what I am doing and go play.

So if you’re feeling like you aren’t doing enough with your life, remember the difference you can make every day, just by loving the people who are in your life and spending quality time with them. Have a great week.
