AGM P&C Meeting: Wednesday, 14 March @ 6:30pm
New members welcome- all Executive Positions are declared vacant each year.
We would love to see many more faces come along to meetings to ensure our P&C is truly representative of our whole school parent body.
Maintaining High Quality School Bus Services to Maleny Schools
With the possibility of 2 of our bus services amalgamating in the near future I was asked at our P&C meeting and by a parent separately to firstly bring this to our wider school community’s attention and to promote our local bus services. I am only too happy to do this and have summarised many of the viewpoints presented to me below.
As a school we encourage where practical children to utilise the bus services. The Maleny Bus services provide: a high quality, safe service that reduces school traffic congestion; help to develop student independence; support to busy parents and are good for the environment! Thankfully we have high quality bus providers and excellent drivers that ensure our students are transported safety to and from school. There are a range of strategies the school uses to support children that access our bus services. For example supporting drivers/children if issues arise and using dedicated staff that escort children in Prep and Year 1 to the bus. Registering for bus services is a simple process and the school office is able to assist parents with advice.
Proposed Amalgamation of Wootha/Booroobin Bus Service & Reesville Bus Service
The Wootha/Booroobin and Reesville Bus Services are currently being reviewed by the Department of Transport and Main Roads. Currently there is a proposal to amalgamate the two bus routes. Presently there are two 57 seat buses that service this route however there are only 54 students in total registered. It is proposed for the one bus to travel out along Maleny Stanley River Road to the current terminus returning via Burnett Lane, Reesville Road, including the spur along Corks Pocket Road and Macadamia Drive back to Maleny SS and SHS. Consideration is being given to a slight realignment to the Mt Mellum-Bald Knob route for students residing at Treehaven Estate. An amalgamation of the bus services will result in longer travel times for some students (estimated at approximately 10 minutes longer by Dept. Transport). Some parents have expressed concern around longer travel times for students and for the potential of buses at times being full which could mean the possibility of children having to stand. Parents who currently use these services are overwhelmingly positive about the quality of the service provided.
The amalgamation proposal is currently open for feedback as part of a community consultation. If you have any questions or concerns please contact Stan Harvey {Principal Project Advisor (STATS)} 0477365084 or stasoptimisation@tmr.qld.gov.au. Some parents are compiling a submission for the consultation process and would like to ensure that any parents who have children living on these routes are aware of this amalgamation proposal and encourage them to register their children for this service if they have not yet done so. The Wootha/Booroobin service route begins just past Witham Lane and the Reesville Bus service at Reesville Road/Kings Lane (please note these road/lanes are for primary school age catching the free bus).
Free Bus Service
To be eligible for free bus services students from Prep to Year 6 must live 3.2km by the shortest trafficable route from the school or 4.8km for High School students. If you live closer you may still catch the service. Costs may vary with different companies and it is worth noting that this cost can be as low as $1 per trip, which may be cheaper & more convenient than driving your children to school. Check costs with your bus company.

Individual Writing Goals
Research shows us that one of the largest impacts on student improvement is being able to set individual learning goals and track progress. This year across the school from Prep through to year 6 students will be setting individual writing goals, firstly around Punctuation. Punctuation is the marks, such as full stops, commas, and brackets, used in writing to separate sentences and their elements and help us to clarify meaning. Proficient writers can use these to great effect to enhance their writing so the reader is captivated.
Students from Year 1 up will use the following punctuation ladder to determine what their goal will be and will record their goal on their ‘My Learning Goal’ sheet, these sheets will be glued in their writing exercise books. Prep use a Punctuation Strip.
If you are wondering what your child’s Punctuation Goal is ask them, if they are able to tell you and explain their goal they are well on the way to achieving the goal they have set! If you are unsure of what your child’s Punctuation goal is ask their class teacher who will be able to clarify this for you and your child.
2018 International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) - Entries Close Friday, 2 March 2018

Welcome to Christian Religious Instruction – 2018
At Maleny, Christian Religious Instruction has been facilitated for many years, and once again, a dedicated team of trained volunteers will present the approved curriculum lessons, which enable the children to engage with the Bible through stories, music, drama, reading, puzzles, and discussions.
Classes are offered to students from Year 1 to 6 to help them understand the Christian Faith, and provides a framework for them to explore the teachings of Jesus, and aims to encourage them to develop perceptions of love, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, friendship, compassion, self-control, honesty and respect - values that can be shared with all.
To allow your child’s participation, please advise the office in writing.
If you have any further questions, please contact the Christian RI Coordinator, Carol Thornton on 0439 944496

SWPBL (School Wide Positive Behaviour Learning)
What is School Wide Positive Behaviour for Learning (SWPBS)?
Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a whole-school approach to creating a safe and supportive environment that has a strong evidence-base and is used in many Queensland State Schools. It uses preventative, teaching and reinforcement-based strategies to achieve meaningful and durable behaviour outcomes.
What a great start to the year with teachers working with their students to establish classroom rules around our four school rules – Be a Learner, Be Safe, Be Responsible and Be a Learner. With rules displayed prominently in classrooms and around the school, expectations are consistently reinforced throughout the year to promote student engagement and academic achievement.
Students displaying positive behaviours are rewarded with 4 Be cards which are traded for stamps on individual tracking sheets each term. These encourage students to try their best so that they can make it into the Be Clubs. At the end of the term, students participate in rewards according to the club they are in.
This term’s rewards day is Thursday 29th March.
The rewards are as follows:
Be Super (students achieving 10 stamps) – class prize/
reward
Be Awesome (students achieving 20 stamps) – games on the oval
Be Epic (students achieving 30 stamps) – movie in the hall
This Week's Rule
This fortnight’s rule is Be Safe and our Buzz phrase is “ Walk or Sit”. Students are encouraged to move safely around the school and in their classrooms. For example, walking safely on concrete and when going downstairs. They are asked to consider what it means to be safe and the consequences of being safe/ unsafe.
Year 4 A, B & C
Year 4 have had an exciting start to the term with the addition of an extra teacher at Maleny State School. We welcome Kerry Hadson to our team (Year 4C teacher) and we are all looking forward to working together. The three year 4 classes are working very well and the students have settled in to their new classes with great resilience.
In English, we are enjoying reading “The Twits” by Roald Dahl. The students have been creating ideas for new tricks that could be added to the novel. Students will soon be writing an extra chapter for “The Twits”, using our 7 Steps for Writing Success strategies. It has been great to see the enthusiasm from students with their writing.
Instrumental music has started and is a new and exciting opportunity for year 4 students to be involved in. Lessons are held every Tuesday with a rotating timetable, which is displayed in each classroom. Students are reminded to bring their instruments to school every Tuesday.
There are some changes to our specialist’s timetable which will begin this week. Music and PE will be on a Tuesday and Innovation Centre (including Library borrowing) will be on a Monday. We are asking students to remember to bring their swimming gear to school each Tuesday and their library books and library bag on a Monday.
It has been great to meet many of the parents last week with parent interviews. We are looking forward to a busy yet successful term ahead.
Kind regards,
Jodie Kyte (4A), Kerry Lees (4B) and Kerry Hadson (4C).
Year 5A & 5B
English
So far Year 5 students have been analysing the Emily Rodda novel "Forests of Silence", focussing on the vocabulary she chooses to portray the main characters. We are also trying to expand our own language choices in our own writing.
Science
As part of the Adaptation unit we have looked at how animals and plants can change structurally and behaviourally to survive in specific environments. This week, (due to the heat) we started our Create A Creature assessment on the computers in the airconditioned computer lab. The task involves us designing 2 different animals to suit their environments. One environment is the desert and the other is a rainforest. Here are two early examples.
Year 6
GRIP Leadership Conference - Year 6
27 Year 6 leaders recently participated in the GRIP conference at the Kawana Community Centre. The GRIP program is a practical and interactive training conference for student leaders.
The program was developed to help students to prepare them in practical ways for their role as leaders at our school. They looked at possible opportunities to make an impact on others, whilst growing as a leader. It was a fantastic day and we were very proud of the behaviour of our leaders, well done.

Innovation Centre News
It is great to see a large number of children already getting into the new Oliver Library system, searching for books or resources they want to read or use. Many children are navigating the system with relative ease. This will only improve as we implement some dedicated class lessons during visits. Ms. Shelley has been busy getting some new books into our system. As always we are looking for people to help out with contacting of our new items to ensure they last for years to come. If you are able to help out come in and see us and well kit you out with all that you need.
GEMS (STEM) RoboClub
Some Year 5 & 6 students were invited to apply to be part of a GEMS Robotics Club. At the time of writing this article the 8 participants are still being finalised. However, there was great interest and excitement at what may be going on in this club. One such activity is participation in Lego Robotic Sumo competition. YES! Japanese Sumo battles with Lego robots. Students will need to design, build and code the program to enable their robot to battle another in the Sumo ring. Of course when things don’t go as planned they will need to go back to the drawing board and try new ideas to get the best robot possible. An example of a Lego Robot Sumo competition is shown in the Youtube clip below.

War on Waste
Many Thanks to Helen and Theo's Grandmother for donating a double rotating compost bin for our garden. William and Cameron from Year 4 have been doing a terrific job at collecting the compost from all eating areas each day. The garden beds have been weeded and ready to plant out with herbs and vegetables. All eating areas have signs and photos to show what can be recycled to help the students use the correct bin. We had Sandie Johnston from the Sunshine Coast Council come up to talk to some of our staff and our wonderful and dedicated cleaners. Our school has signed up for the STARS program where the council will be donating extra recycling wheelie bins but also providing composting and recycling bins for all classes. Some of our students will be trained in completing an audit and becoming bin monitors in different eating areas to determine how we can reduce landfill. Classes are now learning about the importance of recycling and are learning to identify what goes in each bin.

Chappy News
HARD OR SOFT?
I was listening to a speaker this morning talking about a hot topic of suffering in this world. He made a great statement, “The same sun that softens the wax, hardens the clay.”
Everyone responds differently to hardship and trials. Either we grow softer from these experiences or we grow harder and the challenge is, how do I remain “soft” (empathetic and kind) in the midst of probably very unfair life experiences. A hardened heart usually results from pent up bitterness and un-forgiveness, blame and hate. A hardened heart keeps us locked in a prison of sorts, separating us from receiving love and emotional connections that we all desperately need. Hardness comes when our trust has been trampled on and people have hurt us in ways that we feel are unforgiveable. I want to encourage you today to examine your heart and truthfully ask yourself the question, “Have the tough experiences I have faced/or am facing, making me a harder or a softer person?” If you know you have grown harder, make the decision today to look for the good in people and circumstances. Look for the beauty that is all around you, often hidden in the microscopic or more truthfully staring you right in the face. Look for ways to show kindness to someone who can’t repay you. For it is through choosing to see these things with these ‘glasses’, that great awe and wonder fills our hearts and changes our lives.
UPCOMING EVENTS…
- Tickets to the “Maleny’s Milkin’ IT For Charity” event on 3rd March at Maleny Dairies can be purchased from Desley in the office.

P & C News
HAPPY NEW YEAR - Our P&C is off to a flying start with a very energetic meeting of parents and citizens last Wednesday night. We have had great new suggestions for fundraising and what our priorities are for spending that money on our school and our kids.
Come and be part of the action at our AGM on Wednesday 14th March - 6.30pm in the school Innovation Center. New members have already joined us and we are looking for more! This year we will also be looking for someone to support our Social Media platform - so if that's your thing - please let us know.
Our fabulous Tuckshop is looking for another group of volunteers to support the great services they provide - especially on Tuesday when we provide the very popular Sushi rolls. It is only for 3hrs once a month to greatly support our kids. More details can be collected from the office. Our rosters are very low - we need your help!
Also, if you are interested in your children catching one of the school busses to and/or from school please contact the office. The bus services provide a safe and convenient service to not only reduce the number of cars on the road but to save you the chaos of finding a park and having to rush to the school so frequently! Please support this option, you will be surprised where they are able to collect from.
Thank you to those who are continuing to come in and read and support our children. It really is a rewarding experience and your kids love that you do it. It's not too late to join in, there is always a place for more readers.
We are looking forward to another great year and we thank you for your continued support, see you at the AGM Wednesday 14 March - bring a friend!
