Principals Report

Welcome to Maleny State School 2018

A warm welcome to all returning and new families and of course a special welcome must go to all of our Preppies who have settled in beautifully. We are honoured that you have chosen our school to support and educate your children. We also welcome a number of new staff including Mrs Dykes, Ms Johnston and Mrs Jenkinson (Yr 1/2 teachers), Mrs Poingdestre (Yr 2 teacher) and Mrs Hume (Yr 4 teacher).

Ryan excels at the Pacific School Games

Congratulations to Ryan who is proving he is an absolute world champion when it comes to Track and Field events. Ryan competed in the Pacific School Games competing against students from all over Australia and over ten other countries at the end of 2017 school year. In total 4000 athletes competed in 11 different sports. Not only did Ryan win three gold medals (long jump, shotput and discus with a PB in each) and two bronze medals (200m & 10-12 Yrs multi class team) he also broke three Pacific Games records for Long Jump, Discus and Shotput. Well done Ryan, we are all extremely proud of you and these outstanding achievements.

Meet and Greet Parent Information Sessions - This Week

Teachers this week will hold parent information sessions after school. These sessions will introduce parents to their child’s teacher and inform parents in approximately 30 minutes how class routines will operate throughout the year. Information regarding curriculum content, student expectations, yearly camps and opportunities for parents to ask questions will be provided. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet your children’s teacher and find out how your child’s classroom operates. Building a strong relationship with your child’s teacher that allows open communication is extremely important.

Welcome Banquet Friday

Please join with us this Friday, 2 February from 3:30pm – 5:30pm to meet some new families and teachers, and catch up with some of your children’s friends’ families. This event is a joint initiative of the school and P&C. Please bring a plate, picnic blanket if you wish and enjoy some friendly company on our school oval or in the shed if it rains. Students loved playing on the oval last year with their friends. A free BBQ will be in operation and drinks will be available for purchase, you are welcome to BYO. This event was well supported last year and staff are looking forward to catching up with parents and students in an informal atmosphere.

Helpers required for our Pirate Musical

Please come along to our first planning meeting at 3:00pm on Monday 19th February for Musical volunteers taking on major roles of costuming, acting staging etc. and anyone who would like to be involved. For more information on how you can help see the Music Notes article.

P&C Meeting

Our first meeting for the year will be held on Wednesday 14th February at 6:30pm in the Innovation Centre (library). Please join us, new faces are always welcome.

Reminder: Slow down in 40km/h school zones

Police across the Sunshine Coast District are urging all motorists to take extra care, slow down and be on the lookout for pedestrians near schools. The school zone speed limit is designed to ensure motorists have a greater chance to react if something unexpected happens.

Children can be impulsive, unpredictable and inexperienced, which is why motorists need to exercise caution in the vicinity of a school.

Speeding through school zones greatly increases the risk to pedestrians as the faster a vehicle is travelling, the longer it takes to stop and the greater the severity of impact.

For further information on school zones, visit the link below.

Parent Teacher Interviews Yr 1- 6

This year we will have 2 formal occasions where parents sit one on one with their child’s teacher and discuss their child and the progress they are making. Information on how to book will go home later this week. Please go on line and book your time slot. If you do not have internet access please call the office who will be able to assist you.

Interview One (Yrs 1-6)

The first opportunity will be in Week Four Term One to open communication channels between teachers and parents and allow a positive relationship to be developed. On this occasion you as parents will do the majority of the talking informing the teacher about your child and how they learn best (e.g. what they are good at, interests, motivators, special needs or considerations, medical issues, social abilities, academic challenges, behaviour). Teachers will be able to briefly communicate how your child is settling in and inform you if there are any early concerns noted. Prep parents have their parent teacher interviews in weeks 1 and 2.

Interview Two

These interviews will be held late in Term 2. On this occasion teachers will do the majority of talking giving parents more detailed and explicit information around how your child is progressing academically, behaviourally and socially at school. You will also receive your child’s Semester One report around this time.

Please note parents are welcome to meet with your child’s teacher at any stage throughout the year, please ensure you make an appointment with the teacher to enable this to be a productive meeting.

Invitation to our 2018 L.A.P. Tutors and Classroom Volunteers Information Session

Our school is inviting volunteers, parents and carers who wish to support our students with their learning, to participate in either our Learning Assistance Program (L.A.P.) or Classroom Volunteer Program this year.

Our Learning Assistance Program (L.A.P.) involves volunteer tutors supporting students with some aspect of their learning. This may be aspects of Literacy (Reading, Writing or Spelling), Numeracy or other interest areas such as Art or Science. This is a very beneficial program and has been in place at Maleny Primary School for many years.

Our Classroom Volunteer Program involves supporting students with many aspects of their learning e.g. Maths, Reading, Writing and Spelling.

Volunteers who wish to participate in either or both programs in 2018 are invited to an information session and morning tea to prepare for the year ahead. This session will provide information on Code of Conduct, Student Protection, Asbestos Awareness, Reading and Writing.

Details are as follows:

Date: Wednesday, 7 February (Week 3)
Time: 10:00 – 11:00 a.m.
Place: The Meeting Room (the middle room of our new library building)

Any enquiries can be directed to Eric Flamank, our Support Teacher: Literacy and Numeracy, on 5499 8333.

Swimming Carnival (9yrs-12yrs)

Our 2018 Swimming Carnival will be held next Friday, 9 February commencing at 9:00 am. Students should ensure they wear their Sports House shirts to promote their team. Please reinforce with your children the importance of reapplying sunscreen throughout the day and drinking lots of water before they leave home. We welcome parents to be a part of this day and encourage all children to participate. If you would like to assist as a timekeeper or tuckshop helper please see Mr Turner or contact the office. Please note only Yr 3 students turning 9 this year will participate in the carnival.

SWPBS (School Wide Positive Behaviour Support)

This week’s Rule: Be Respectful

Our Buzz Phrase: First Time Every Time (parents love this one, use it at home, reward the behaviour when it occurs and you will see more of the desired behaviour displayed.)

Our school is a Positive Behaviour Support School. This means we teach our children what our rules and routines expectations are and reward them for meeting or exceeding these expectations. An important element is making clear what our expectations are. For this reason I have outlined some of our before and after school expectations below.

Before School Routines

Note supervision is only provided from 8:30 onwards, students are encouraged not to attend before this time.

  • Arrive at school from 8:30 onwards (Preps go straight to classrooms)
  • Students may go to the Innovation centre and borrow a library book
  • Sit in year level area until the first bell goes
  • After the first bell at 8:30 students may play handball on courts in year level area only
  • Running or hanging around toilet areas is not permitted
  • When second bell goes students line up for class or move directly to classrooms

After School Routines

Walking or Riding

After the 2:50 bell students are to collect their belongings and move home promptly.

Bikes are to be kept in bike racks and scooters in area near staff room.

Students must dismount inside the school grounds, footpath and when using the crossing.

It is important students are respectful of all other footpath users.

Smile and acknowledge Lolly Pop Lady/Man (It’s Free)

Students waiting for parents in cars (arriving at 2:50)

Students are to wait quietly along Prep fence or behind Pedestrian Crossing area on School side only not on the fence across the road. Parents can park on this side of the road and students can then cross and meet them. (This is for their safety and a courtesy to our neighbours.) If parents are ever later than the time Lolly Pop workers have finished, children must move to the office, call home and wait there safely.

Waiting for High School Siblings

All students waiting for older siblings need to wait in the supervised area under B Block with Bus students. Staff will escort them out on time to meet siblings.

No students are to wait on the other side of the road near crossing.

Bus

2:50 Buses

Students move promptly to footpath and wait along fence in front of the appropriate bus and wait for Bus driver to load students. Prep and Year 1 students are collected from their class and directed to the correct areas until they board their bus by school staff.

Students need to ensure they are not waiting on the walkway as this impedes pedestrian traffic.

Once loaded students must remain seated at all times and talk quietly.

Students must follow the QLD Transport Code of Conduct. Bus drivers will enforce this with a three strikes policy.

3:05 Buses

Students move directly under B Block and wait quietly in bus lines.

Staff will take students and load on to buses just after 3:00, this coincides with the time High School students start to walk past our school.

GoodStart – After School Care

Students attending afterschool care must sit and wait quietly under the year 1 classrooms where they will be collected by GoodStart staff and transported by mini bus.

Drop off / Pick up Zone (to right of pedestrian crossing school side)

Students wait quietly next to Prep school fence until parents arrive.
Students load quickly when parents arrive.
Students need to ensure they are not waiting on the walkway as this impedes pedestrian traffic.

If parents have not arrived before Lolly Pop workers have finished students move to the office and wait to be collected.

Have a Magic week in Maleny. John

From the Deputy Principal

Welcome back to the start of a brand new and exciting year. Welcome also to a number of new families to our school.

This year our main priority continues to be Writing, using the ‘7 Steps to Writing’ Program elements. Over the last year our school has worked on Writing, gaining further consistency in how we teach Writing from P-6 and also achieved great results in improving student outcomes by having a clear policy on how Writing is taught at Maleny State School. Not only have the teachers seen improvement in student writing samples but many students have gained a greater confidence in ‘having-a-go’ at writing. Students who previously groaned at having to write were now writing pieces at home and wanting to share them at school. The latest research around student improvement shows an important between motivation and engagement as a huge contributing factor to student growth in learning.

At the start of any new school year it is important to establish routines and procedures both at home and at school and to be open in our communication between home and school. To help assist in this process Maleny State School offers a number of events.

Parent Teacher Meet and Greet afternoons

Each year level organises an afternoon session to inform parents of year level expectations, events and activities, commencing this week. Further details would have been provided in the classroom teacher’s Class Newsletter which would have gone home last week.

Innovation Centre News

The Innovation Centre Team would like to welcome everyone back to an exciting new year. There have been some changes and new additions to the Centre that we’d like to showcase.

3D printer has arrived

The school’s brand-new 3D printer has arrived late last year just as school was coming to a close. Already some eager year 6 students have been assisting with the unpacking and setup. It will take a few weeks before we are fully functional and printing but it is exciting to see the amount of interest and discussion there is going on about how does the printer actually work not to mention what types of 3D objects we should try to print. I dare say there will be some design challenges ahead as we explore how we might use this new technology, not only for club activities, but in class activities to solve problems in Mathematics, Science and Technology Design.

Oliver has arrived

The school has just implemented a brand-new Library catalogue management system. This system is called Oliver. This web based system allows for the searching of the Maleny State School catalogue through just about any web browser. Many of our collection have cover images to assist with the easy searching of books you may be interested in reading. The first image shows the home page. It will highlight popular books, recently added books as well as highly rated (by our readers) book sin our collection. Later this year students will be able to rate and write reviews of the books they have read.

The search feature (1) allow allows easily locate books, topics of interest or even search for authors that interest you. Once a book has been selected the information panel on the title (2) appears showing you more information about the book including a synopsis, location details in the library as well as how many copies there may be available for loan. Finally, the 'You may also like' side bar (3) will highlight other books based on your search, similar books, other books by the same author and even other books that are located on the same shelf nearby.

The Oliver system is available for viewing and exploration from the school website homepage or directly via the following web address below. Be sure to add the link to your favourites so that you can help your child seek out books that they enjoy reading. In coming newsletters more will be shared on how to better utilise this system e.g. Creating a reading list, how to find a book if we don’t have it on hand.
