Principal’s Report

Our School Priorities are:
- Teaching Reading Through the Australian Curriculum V9
- Developing Effective Pedagogies when Implementing the Australian Curriculum V9 Mathematics
Every day Counts: The Importance of School Attendance
Did you know that missing just 2 days a month can add up to nearly a month of lost learning over the school year? Regular attendance is key to your child’s academic success, social development, and confidence in the classroom.
Students who attend school consistently are more likely to stay on track with learning, build strong relationships with peers and teachers, and develop habits that support long-term success. Whether it’s a math lesson or a classroom discussion, each day matters.
Please help us support your child’s growth by ensuring they arrive on time and ready to learn every day. If your family is facing challenges with attendance, don’t hesitate to reach out—we’re here to help!
Together, we can make every day count!
Uninterrupted Learning
Please help us to minimise class disruption by ensuring students know the arrangements of how they will be travelling home in the afternoon before they leave home. We understand at times circumstances change that are out of your control and you will need to contact the school to advise your children of these changes.
However, the number of phone calls coming into the office daily that are then needed to be transferred to classes has increased and is interrupting classes which ultimately affects students learning.
National Families Week 2025

Families Week – Join us this Friday at 2:00pm
Families Week is a time to acknowledge the strength and diversity of our families and the partnership we have in educating our students. Chappy is organising this event where children are doing some artwork that will be displayed in the hall. Please join with us at 2:00pm on Friday 16 May for afternoon tea.
Democracy Sausage and Cake Stall
Thank you to all parents and staff that provided baked goods and fresh produce, or volunteered at our election sausage sizzle and cake stall. This was a very well supported fundraiser and lots of fun. Altogether we raised over $1600 profit.

School Photos
School photos were taken on 1 May. Sibling and leadership photos will be completed on Thursday 15 May commencing at 9:00am. Please ensure students are dressed in full school uniform.
Cross Country
This year’s cross country was one of the most exciting days this year and showcased our very positive school culture. The weather held up just long enough to complete all races. While this was a competitive event, especially for our students aged 10 and above (who had the chance of making our school team to represent at the Glasshouse District Sports), the fun of just participating and cheering was certainly front and centre. Student participation in all year levels was excellent along with a very strong parent attendance. Thank you, Mr Turner, for coordinating and Alex for preparing our track.
Under 8’s Day
Our 2025 Under 8's Day will be held on Wednesday 21 May from 9:00am until 10:30 am. This year’s theme is ‘Unleashing Scientific Thinking Through Play’. Our students from Prep to Year 2 will be participating in numerous activities that will be run by school and OSHC staff, community members and Year 6 students. We welcome all parents and community members, especially children Under 8.

Mother’s Day Stall
Thank you, Kate Stassen, for organising this year’s Mother’s Day Stall and all those that assisted her. It was a great success and students certainly enjoyed making carefully heartfelt purchases. Happy Mother’s Day to all our Maleny Mums.

Chappy Week
Each year we celebrate Chappy Week to raise awareness of the value of school chaplains.
This year Chappy Week will be celebrated from 20 May – 24 May.
Have a Magic Week in Maleny.

PBL (Positive Behaviour Learning)

Be Rule: Be a Learner
Buzz Phrase: I can, I will, I’ll have a go!
This fortnight’s buzz phrase is a ‘Be a Learner’ rule: I can, I will, I’ll have a go! We love this rule at Maleny State School because it is a quick and effective way to encourage our students to step out of their comfort zone and have a go at something. We all know that it takes mistakes to learn, but sometimes making mistakes can be scary.
For this rule we remind students:
- Mistakes are ok (it is how we learn/improve)
- Positive self-talk is essential, tell yourself ‘I Can Do This!’
- Give your best effort
- Begin and finish classroom work
- Encourage others around you to have a go, too!
In this way, we can build a whole school learning culture by encouraging others, praising others for having a go and trying their best.

Year 4
The Year 4 students thoroughly enjoyed having guest speakers from Sunshine Coast Council talk about invasive animal and plant species and the endangered Mary River Turtle. They gave us a book called ‘Rocky and the River in Peril’ about a Mary River Turtle encountering invasive animals like feral cats, pigs and foxes and invasive plants like Salvinia and Cat’s Claw Creeper. This was a wonderful introduction to our Science Unit on Endangered Animals and our English Unit where we write informative texts on Endangered Animals. Teachers were most impressed with the knowledge that our Year 4 students already had about invasive animals and plants. Here are a couple of comments made by children about the visit.
“I loved the story about the Mary River Turtle called Rocky and I learnt how wild cats, foxes, deer and wild pigs can hurt the Mary River Turtle. We need to look after the turtle because it is endangered.” Oscar
“It opened my eyes to how things like Cat’s Claw Creeper are bad for the environment and made me stop and think about lots of things, ‘Is this supposed to be here or not?’” Charlotte B
In Science, we have been looking at the Life Cycle of Plants and Animals. 4A students were lucky enough to witness the Monarch/Wanderer Butterfly caterpillar turn into a chrysalis right before our eyes. We soon found out why the caterpillar had crawled onto the edge of the bucket, as it required a stable platform to attach its cocoon. We are waiting patiently for a butterfly to emerge from the chrysalis. Immy was also very excited to find a large green tree frog on the 4A stairs which was wonderful for our life cycle discussions. After we had a look, Immy found a new home for the green tree frog in the forest. Children have been busily drawing and labelling a variety of different life cycles.

In English, we have started exploring different informative texts. The children will be reading and answering lots of questions on a procedural text about making wicking beds.
We were most impressed with Cross Country participation last Friday and we have a few students who will represent Maleny next Monday in the District Cross Country. We wish them all the best of luck.

Garden Club News
Garden Club members were delighted to witness the remarkable growth of their vegetables over the holidays. After months of dedicated weeding, mulching and planting, it has been rewarding for members to taste garden produce. Cherry tomatoes wrapped in crisp lettuce leaves have been a popular snack.

Families
12 – 18 May is National Families week. This year’s theme is ‘Lending a hand to thrive: supporting each other’. Here at Maleny State School we want to acknowledge our amazing families and say how much we value the partnership between the school staff and student’s family members. Together our goal is to see students grow, thrive and learn.
Every year we invite parents, grandparents and caregivers to attend a special families week celebration. So, I would like to personally invite you to afternoon tea on Friday 16 May at 2pm in the school hall. We will be serving a delicious afternoon tea and a cuppa. You will also have the opportunity to see your student’s family themed artwork which has been specially created for the occasion. You will also receive a family gift bag filled with goodies and inspiration. Pre-school aged children are welcome to attend, school aged children will stay in class for this one. Please come along if you can, it is a great opportunity to meet other parents and caregivers and to relax for a while before school pick up.
Thank you for all you do as a caregiver. Hope to see you there.
