New Acting Principal Appointment
I am pleased to announce that Mr Chris Hay current Deputy Principal of Chancellor State College will be appointed as Acting Maleny SS Principal commencing in Term 4. Chris brings a wealth of experience from working previously in a number of smaller schools, to his current position in a large Prep to Year 12 College. In speaking with Chris, he is extremely excited about this appointment and looking forward to becoming part of and working with the Maleny SS community.
“ I’m honoured to step into the role of Acting Principal at Maleny State School for Term Four. Since 2015, I’ve been at Chancellor State College as deputy principal, while my children attended Palmwoods; they have all now progressed into high school. Prior to that, I have held various principal and acting principal roles across Queensland, including Chancellor State College, Victoria Plantation, Ilfracombe, Gympie East, Montville and Muttaburra.
My family and I now call beautiful Towen Mountain home, at the base of the range; which speaks to our love of the Sunny Coast hinterland. My wife Sharon and I; with our three children Amelia (17), Tristan (15) and Ava (12), enjoy the beach, camping, sport, and exploring new places.
I’m looking forward to connecting with the Maleny community, and am genuinely excited to become part of your school.” Chris Hay
Later in Term 4 a formal temporary merit rocess will take place which Chris will be eligible to apply. This process allows all interested applicants to apply and ensures that our P&C will have input into the selection process.
Chris comes highly recommended from his school and departmental staff.
This early appointment will allow Chris to have sufficient time for a handover process to take place.
This Wednesday myself and our school leadership team will be meeting with Chris at a Regional Planning Day on the coast with other leadership teams within the region to commence planning our Strategic Plan for the next 4 Years.
As we have just finished our school review process and are awaiting on the final report to be finalised by the External School Improvement Team, I believe this is perfect timing for a new principal to take over from myself. I am confident in Chris’ ability and of the support that he will receive from our Leadership team, staff, P&C, students and school community to continue to implement and enhance the culture, processes and overall management of our school.
Students Shine on School Camps
Over the last two weeks I have had the pleasure of attending both the Year 4 Currimundi and Year 5 Maranatha Camps. Instructors and staff from both camps along with myself were very impressed by our students’ manners, cooperation and participation. Students (and myself) certainly enjoyed these camps, and I am confident that in many years to come they will still remember attending them. All students have strengths and it is great to see some students who excel more in the outdoor classroom than they do indoors. Students have the opportunity to interact with other students they never have before and get to see a different side of staff as do staff of students. School camps deliberately push students out of their comfort zone (just enough) to allow children to face new experiences and challenges and be self-aware of how they perform in these circumstances. Camps also assist students to build important resilience and leadership skills. I congratulate all parents for sending their children and staff that left their families to attend and support students 24 hours a day in their own unpaid time. Congratulations Year 4 & 5 students you have made myself and all staff very proud of you.

P&C President Position Vacant
After 9 years of involvement in the P&C most of these in an executive role and 5 years as President Merrick Ilett will be stepping down from the President role at our September P&C meeting to allow for a smooth transition process to occur. Merrick will continue as an additional Vice President to enable him to support the new President before leaving our school as a parent (his children will have all moved to High School) at the end of the year.
Merrick has been an incredibly hard worker and supporter of our school and myself for many years. While Merrick leaves big shoes to fill this is a golden opportunity for a new parent to join our P&C and have the opportunity to learn the president role alongside the current president in a smooth transition before the end of the year. If you would like to know more about the President role, please don’t hesitate to contact Merrick to discuss milet3@eq.edu.au .
If you would like to become our next P&C President, please complete a nomination form for the position and submit it to the Secretary, Erin Porter, either by email eport96@eq.edu.au or in person.

PBL (Positive Behaviour Learning)

Be Rule: Be Responsible
Buzz Phrase: STOP! Think. Do.
Our latest buzz phrase is a SMART GOAL created using our most recent PBL data. This fortnight it is a “Be Responsible” rule “Stop! Think. Do”. This is a wonderful buzz phrase that incorporates many different 4Be focusses that our students are already familiar with.

This buzz phrase encourages our students to:
- Notice the signals in their body & minds
- Think about their choices before reacting
- Use the High 5 to solve problems
- Take responsibility for their behaviour.
STOP – take 3 deep breaths, what are you feeling?
THINK – think of a solution and your choices.
DO – choose the best solution and do it.
Some familiar strategies our students can use for this are:
- Bounce back (Be a Learner)
- Keep hands and feet to yourself (Be Respectful)
- Play fair (Be Responsible)
- Make good choices (Be Responsible)
- Choose to defuse (Be safe)
- Keep your cool (Be Safe & Be Respectful)
- Be FUN (Flexible, Understanding, Negotiate)
- THINK before you speak (Is it True, Helpful, Inspiring, Necessary, or Kind?
We are looking forward to filling up our PBL rocket on assembly again with this new Smart Goal, and we are confident we will fill it to receive 20 minutes extra free playtime for everyone!
