Principal’s Report

Our School Priorities are:
Teaching Reading Through the Australian Curriculum V9
Developing Effective Pedagogies when Implementing the Australian Curriculum V9 Mathematics

Administration Block Refurbishment
Our Administration Block (Front Office, Staffroom, all offices etc) will be temporarily relocated to the Library/Innovation Centre Meeting Room commencing Monday 16 June. All normal office tasks (signing children/volunteers in and out, sick room, general enquiries) will be conducted from here. Our P&C Meeting this Wednesday will be held in the Library.
We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause and will be doing our best to make this change operate as smoothly as possible. For us the disruption is huge (moving every single item out of the administration block including furniture, posters etc to allow painting and recarpeting) however, so too are the benefits the completed works will bring. Your co-operation during this time by minimising office demands is greatly appreciated.
School Review Update
Over the last two weeks our leadership team and teachers have conducted conversations with all staff, students and as many parents as possible to gather feedback on affirmations of what we do well as a school and identify what our next steps are. Over the next few weeks, we will collate all these conversations along with parent surveys and produce a comprehensive report detailing the key findings and recommended improvement strategies. This report will be given to external school reviewers who will spend two days in our school in Term Three to validate our findings.
Maleny Show
It was great to see our students’ talent on display at our local Maleny Show. Congratulations to Mr Hayter and our concert band who kicked off the show playing beautifully in very wet and challenging conditions.
Thank you also to Lou and Trish for organising our fantastic school’s entry which was simply outstanding.

If you missed our champion chooks that our Poultry Club entered you will have the chance to see them again this week at the Sunshine Coast (Nambour) Show. Thank you to Jo Dykes and students for grooming our ladies to look their absolute best.

Parent Reading Workshop
Thank you to all parents that attended last week’s Parent Reading Workshop. This was presented by Brent Heiniger our Literacy/Numeracy Coach. If you were unable to attend or would like to know more about how we teach reading at school and how you can assist your child at home please don’t hesitate to contact Brent, Paula or myself.
Volunteers Required for Maleny Trail Ride
We have had a number of new parents volunteer who are keen to be a part of this exciting event. This is a great fundraising opportunity for our P&C, without all of the risk and organisation often associated with many other activities.
If you can assist please let us know now as we approach our deadline for indicating our support for this event. Details below.
This exciting event usually has around 1000 people attend, (riders and family) with 450 open class riders starting and finishing at Green Park, Conondale.
The event is a non-competitive trail ride run on private properties.
The riders will start from Green Park on Saturday from 10.00am and the last rider will leave at 2.00pm.
Sunday ride starts at 8.30am and last rider will leave at 1.00pm.
Our school has been asked to help with Gate Sitter roles, catering and with the event set-up.
Gate Sitters monitor gates, report breakdowns, call First Aid, etc. Generally, 2 volunteers are required per gate. There will be a couple of hours orientation - where the gates are and how to get to them and what to do and how to do it Saturday August 16 and/or Saturday August 23. Many of the gates require 4WD to access and require Gate Sitters to be in the bush.
Those helping with catering will be preparing either breakfast/lunch/dinner on the Saturday and breakfast/lunch on the Sunday. Not a difficult task, just follow what you are asked to do. I have done this before, so no skills are required.
In return for our support through volunteer hours, Maleny Trail Riders will donate a portion of the event’s profits to our school (via the P&C). The more volunteers we provide, the greater the donation to our school — so we need your help!
What Help Is Needed?
The Maleny Trail Riders club needs to know number of gate sitters by June 30.
When Is It?
Saturday 30 August to Sunday 31 August 2025
Volunteers are needed for:
Friday – Event set-up
Saturday – Main ride day - Gate sitters from 7:30 am – approx. 4:00 pm (noting that gates closer to the start of the ride will close earlier).
Sunday – Morning ride – Gate sitters from 7:00 am – approx. 3:00 pm (noting that gates closer to the start of the ride will close earlier).
You can volunteer for one, two, or all three days – every bit helps! Gate sitters will need to commit to staying at the gate until it is closed on the day. Those helping with catering will need to commit to helping with at least 1 meal.
Lunch packs are provided, but some previous sitters have taken their BBQ and made a day of it!
Please email PandC@malenyss.eq.edu.au indicating in which area you would like to volunteer.
P&C Appreciation
I would like to acknowledge the dedication and support that our P&C Association gives to our school. It has been exciting to see new members with fresh new ideas come along to our last meeting and new parents starting to volunteer at fundraising events. A huge thank you from myself and all staff who genuinely appreciate the dedication and time that all P&C members give to our school. Your work means so much for our school staff, students and the broader community.
Our executive have achieved some outstanding outcomes that they should be incredibly proud of and I wish to highlight below.
Some of these include:
- Networking with our community to increase our support base and community relations
- Being a part of our school decision making processes and providing new ideas
- Commencing and maintaining our Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) / Vacation Care program with excellent new refurbished facilities for our school
- Financially supporting the school to gain resources and support the education of students
- Providing volunteers at Working Bees and events
- Hosting and coordinating fundraising events – Community Country Fair, Comedy with a Cause, Discos, Mother’s and Father’s Days, BBQs etc.
- Creating and maintaining a P&C Website that has created a one stop shop for parents with Uniforms, Tuckshop, Events e.g. Country Fair, OSHC and more
- Creating and running our Uniform Shop that is fitted out with displays, sample stock, storage space, an office and change rooms
- Maintaining the Mewar Café.
Joining the P&C Association is a great way to keep informed, to contribute to the quality education of your children and to make new friends. Your contribution can be as large or small as you can manage, but your ongoing support of the P&C Association is invaluable. You can learn new skills and gain a clear understanding of how the school operates. This is a great opportunity to share in the school’s decision-making process and shape the future. Research has shown that parent involvement in a child’s education makes a significant contribution to the child’s success at school.

Next P&C Meeting Wednesday 11 June – We need You!
New parents are welcome and encouraged to attend our next general meeting on Wednesday 11 June at 6:00pm. This meeting will be held in the Computer Room (in B Block behind admin building) where parents can attend face to face or can tune in from their own home using Teams online.
Our P&C is achieving some wonderful outcomes and welcomes all newcomers to ensure that our P&C is truly representative of our whole school parent body. It was great to see some new faces at our last meeting.
Child Safety Review

The Safety, Health and Wellbeing of all children who attend education and care services is a priority. Now is the time to have your say on options to improve child safety in the education and care sector. Consultation is open until 11 June 2025.
Everyone is encouraged to give feedback, especially educators, staff and volunteers, as well as families, parents and carers (and their children). Click here for the parent, carer and family survey.

PBL (Positive Behaviour Learning)

Be Rule: Be Safe and Be Respectful
Buzz Phrase: I Keep My Cool
Wow! At our last parade we filled the new rocket and banked 10mins free play. If we continue earning balls in the buckets and fill the rocket again, we can bring that up to 20mins free play. How Cool is that?
So, why are we doing this? When we Keep our Cool then everyone makes good choices inside and outside of the classroom. We can all enjoy our time at school, feeling safe and happy. It is a great time for us to think about recognising our emotions and making choices to show that we can take control of our own behaviour and let go of things out of our control.
This means:
- I keep my hands and feet to myself.
- I use calming strategies when I feel upset.
- I use the High 5 to help solve problems.
- I move away and re-set.
- I play fairly.
- I am a team player and show good sportsmanship.
When a student shows 4 Be behaviour at school, the teacher will ask the student to put a coloured ball in the bucket. Then, at assembly, classes bring their buckets and empty the balls into the rocket.

Lost Property

Lost property is checked weekly and named items are returned to their owners. Items not collected by the end of the term will be washed and donated to local charities. Please ask your children to have a look, or yourself, in the alcove next to the Yr 4 eating area.
There are lots of jumpers in lost property at the moment due to the cool mornings and warm days.
Year 3/4K
Design Technology Projects
In 3/4K we have been completing several fun projects in our Design Technology unit. We began by designing paper planes and testing them to see how far they would glide. Students then created a catapult which proved effective in launching a projectile, though some more than others! Our major project is building and then modifying a sling-shot car to be both fast and feature a fun theme. Watch this space to see our finished products!

Year 4B & 4A
A Very Exciting Two Weeks
In English we are learning to write an informative text about an endangered or vulnerable species in our local area. This is also combined with our Science Unit this term. The students have all selected an animal to research and are learning to present their work using an informative text structure. We are learning new skills like referencing our sources and how to use objective language and topic specific vocabulary for each paragraph that we present.

Over the last month we have been very fortunate to observe the life cycle of the “Monach butterfly” in our classroom. This was a tremendous experience that the students enjoyed thoroughly, and we could not believe how lucky we were to be present and witness the butterfly leaving the cocoon at the end. Even the teachers were overwhelmed with the experience as this was a first time for all of us.

After watching her rest on the milkweed during the afternoon It was wonderful to release the beautiful Monach butterfly into our school garden and see her fly.
In HASS the students have been interviewing different staff members and family members to find out about how people view life and what groups and interests they have. We could see many similarities with people and a common hope for a peaceful and kind world.
In Media Arts the students have completed a PowerPoint presentation on promoting our very special School Rainforest. They have been learning to add sound effects and visual effects to make their presentation entertaining and informative.
4B students completed a Still life drawing for their Mum and learnt to draw only what they could see. They experimented with mixing colours and shadowing. Some of our students entered their beautiful work in the Maleny Show.

4B have been visiting the rainforest each week and have enjoyed seeing the platypus in the creek. We have also been checking on the Davidson Plums ripening on the tree and have been collecting them as they fall. This week we will remove the two seeds that grow in the fruit and then enjoy Davidson Plum jam and hot bread in the afternoon for mindfulness.

War on Waste
Fantastic News for Maleny Students

This year, Maleny State School is so pleased to be participating in the Pick of the Crop program, funded by the Queensland Government through Health and Wellbeing Queensland.
Pick of the Crop is a whole school healthy eating initiative aimed at increasing the opportunities for primary school students to learn about and eat more vegetables and fruit. We were successful in securing $5000 funding from Health and Wellbeing Queensland to help us achieve our goals to encourage and help our students become veggie kids! The initiative provides support to boost current activities and enable new actions, including supplying our tuckshop with our produce, creating recipes and sharing these on school parade and hopefully having tasting sessions for students at lunch time. Guest speakers have been booked to talk to students about reducing food wastage, composting and healthy eating. We have plans to replace some of our large composting bins in the garden and to set up a greenhouse for the garden club members to harvest and grow our own seedlings. Nude Food lunch boxes will be promoted, and garden club members will be inviting classes to visit the school garden and see, smell and taste the produce we are growing. At present we have 14 wicking beds and 3 large garden beds as well as many pots around the area and on our fence. Signage will be designed by the Garden Club members and placed in eating areas to remind students about healthy eating and reducing plastic and waste. The garden club are also hoping to donate salad bags to the local neighbourhood centre and sell some of our salad bags to parents on special parade days to raise money to replenish supplies in the garden (sugar cane mulch and potting mix etc).
We have been working with Keith Gilbert, our Pick of the Crop regional coordinator and we really enjoy his visits and appreciate his great wealth of knowledge to assist us with our program of promoting healthy eating.
Last week we received our Salad Table (as part of our grant from Pick of the Crop) to try out hydroponics as a different way to grow vegetables. The Year 4 students enjoyed assembling the table. Seeds have been planted, and we look forward to adding them to the Salad table.

The salad table will be given to the two Prep classes for their eating area so as they can watch the veggies grow and then enjoy tasting and creating simple recipes.

Maleny Garden Club enjoys Show Success!
We were so happy to receive several awards for our vegetables at the Maleny Show. This year we came 3rd Place for our School Kitchen Garden Entry, 1st Place for our sample of Four Vegetables, 1st place for our Pak Choy and 3rd Place for our Unusual Peanut Plant featuring our first Peanut!!!

The rain over the past few months has caused the loss of some of our veggies but we managed to select enough for the show display. Well done to our Garden Club members for all the extra work they do weeding and mulching and growing seeds.
We also featured a School display at the Maleny Show which included signs showing the progress made in the Garden Club and in our School Rainforest this year.

Kind Regards
Lou Walsh
Chappy News
Relatively speaking
I look into the mirror and see my aunties looking back at me. They are long gone now but I, in my face, I can see their eyes, smiles and wrinkles. I miss them dearly, especially sitting down with them for a cuppa, chat and homemade treat. They showed so much kindness to those around them.
My Dad was a Jack of all trades. He could fix an engine, panel beat, and spray paint a car, but he could also cook a meal for up to 500 people. He designed and built the house I now live in, and my sister and I often talk with my Mum about how we love his little ‘Dad designs’. I am thankful that whatever I needed help with as a child, my Dad could usually assist me, especially when it came to practical solutions.
My Mum is now 85. Even though she has slowed down with her mobility, she still does everything within her capacity to help me with housework and uses her words to encourage me daily. She is one of my best friends and I am very blessed to have her in my life.
I am an Aunty of four grown up girls and a great Aunty of four little people. My hope is that I will be remembered as the type of Aunty who shows unconditional love and acceptance but also helps in practical ways. I love that I have received my Dad’s gifts of practical helps as well as my Mum’s heart for service to others. I am nowhere near perfect; that’s for sure, but I am thankful for the legacy of love that I have been gifted with.
What is something that has passed down through your family line? What positive character traits are you displaying to your loved ones that your children will observe and admire? I pray that what my children see will be a Mum that isn’t perfect but a Mum that loves them unconditionally and displays kindness on a daily basis.
Chappy’s quote for the week: “The greatest legacy one can pass on to one's children and grandchildren is not money or other material things accumulated in one’s life, but rather a legacy of character and faith” Billy Graham.
