Principal’s Report

Our School Priorities are:
- Teaching Reading Through the Australian Curriculum V9
- Developing Effective Pedagogies when Implementing the Australian Curriculum V9 Mathematics

School Review - Parent Survey
Please take the time to complete a quick parent survey emailed to all parents on Monday 26 May. All survey responses will be anonymously collated. This will help us to make affirmations about our school culture, priorities and systems currently in place and identify what our next steps should be for the next 4 years. This survey will close at 3pm on June 5.
School Review Process
This week our school-based review team, which consists of 9 staff members, will commence the evaluation stage by interviewing staff, parents, students and community members. This may mean a staff member will approach you before/after school or at assemblies and ask your opinion on a number of School Improvement Tool domains and what you see are the next steps for our school to focus on. Parent and student opinions are very much valued by our school.
Click the link below or scan the QR Code to open the survey on a mobile device.

4 weeks of renovations (carpets, painting and minor changes) will commence on our school administration block on 16 June – 14 July. This means no one will have access to our school office, staffroom, offices etc during this time. We will set up a temporary office in the school Library for parents and students to access. This will cause some major disruptions to our normal processes however supports for students will not be compromised. You can assist us by ensuring students arrive at school on time and minimise your need to contact our office for minor matters during this time.
Maleny Show this Friday
The theme this year is around the book the ‘Scarecrows Wedding’ see YouTube clip below.

Don’t miss our school display based on this theme at the Show.

Maleny Show Concert Band Performance
Our School Concert Band will be performing at the Maleny Show on Friday 30 May, at the Maleny Showgrounds.
Students will need to meet at the Performance area at the Maleny Showgrounds at 8:40am. All band members will have the opportunity to watch the other performing primary and high school ensembles and bands performing throughout the morning. Students, friends and family are encouraged to support our students’ performance which will be from 9:00am – 9:15am.
Students will need to be in full band uniform for this performance – black shoes and socks, black pants/long skirt and a black shirt with a band tie provided on the day.
Don’t miss the Poultry Pavilion where some of our chickens will be on display putting their best feathers forward in the school’s division. Thank you to Jo Dykes and all students in the poultry club that are assisting to prepare our chooks.
Celebrating Chappy Week: The Heart of Our School Community
Next week is Chappy Week, we take a moment to recognise and celebrate the incredible work of our school chaplain Chris Boughen —our “Chappy”—who plays a vital role in supporting the wellbeing of students, staff and families across our school community.
Chris provides a listening ear, a caring presence and a source of hope for students navigating life’s challenges. Whether it’s offering guidance during tough times, helping students build resilience, or simply being there for a chat, Chris is a trusted and valued member of our school.
Chappies work alongside teachers and support staff to create a safe, inclusive and supportive environment where every student feels seen and cared for. Their impact goes beyond the classroom, touching lives in ways that often go unnoticed but are deeply felt.
As we celebrate Chappy Week, we encourage students and families to take a moment to thank our Chaplain for their dedication, compassion and unwavering commitment to our school community. Let’s show our appreciation for all Chris does!

National Reconciliation Week (27 May to 3 June)
This year’s theme Bridging Now to Next calls on all Australians to step forward together, to look ahead and continue the push forward as past lessons guide us.
At AITSL, the vision for reconciliation is grounded in their purpose: to support teachers to maximise learning for all children and young people in Australia. Central to this is creating learning environments where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander learners feel known and safe, and are supported to embrace their identities and achieve their full potential.
Families Week
Thank you to all families that attended our Families week celebration afternoon tea in the hall recently. Children’s artwork depicted the strength and diversity of our families and the partnership we play with them in educating our students. Thank you Chappy for organising this event and members of the Baptist church that cooked a delicious array of treats for afternoon tea.
Under 8’s Day
What an amazing day this turned out to be, with perfect weather and over 35 exciting activities, for over 200 ‘under 8’ students to enjoy. A big thank you to all of our community groups and emergency services that were in attendance adding that extra flare and excitement for children. This year’s theme was ‘Unleashing Scientific Thinking Through Play’. It was great to have so many parents in attendance and joining in activities with students. A number of parents went out of their way to compliment the positive culture the school creates and express their gratitude of how supportive our Year 6 students were of our younger students. A huge thank you to our coordinators Jenny Jenkinson and Mandy Bauer along with all staff that spent many hours organising student activities. Special thanks to Gayle from Maleny Library who completed the morning by reading ‘Truck Cat’ to all students in the hall as part of National Simultaneous Storytime where the same story is read across the whole of Australia at the same time.

Volunteers Required for Maleny Trail Ride
My name is first on the list, this is a great event and lots of fun.
The Maleny Trail Riders executive attended the recent P&C meeting to invite our school community to support their major biennial event — the Maleny Trail Ride 2025. This exciting event usually has around 1000 people attend, riders and family with 450 open class riders starting and finishing at Green Park, Conondale.
The event is a non-competitive trail ride run on private properties.
The riders will start from Green Park, Saturday at 10.00am and last rider will leave at 2.00pm.
Sunday ride starts at 8.30am and last rider will leave at 1.00pm.
Our school has been asked to help with Gate Sitter roles, catering and with the event set-up.
Gate Sitters monitor gates, report breakdowns, call First Aid, etc. Generally, 2 volunteers are required per gate. There will be a couple of hours orientation - where the gates are and how to get to them and what to do and how to do it Saturday August 16 and/or Saturday August 23. Many of the gates require 4WD to access and require Gate Sitters to be in the bush.
With the catering, the school is usually asked to help with one meal [lunch, dinner or breakfast] with Sunday lunch anyone is welcome to help.
The Trail Riders will have a catering coordinator who will contact the school with more information.
Those helping with catering will be preparing either breakfast/lunch/dinner on the Saturday and breakfast/lunch on the Sunday. Not a difficult task just follow what you are asked to do, I have done this before, so no skills are required.
In return for our support through volunteer hours, Maleny Trail Riders will donate a portion of the event’s profits to our school (via the P&C). The more volunteers we provide, the greater the donation to our school — so we need your help!
What Help Is Needed?
The Maleny Trail Riders club needs to know number of gate sitters by June 30.
When Is It?
Saturday 30 August to Sunday 31 August 2025
Volunteers are needed for:
- Friday – Event set-up
- Saturday – Main ride day - Gate sitters from 7:30 am – approx. 4:00 pm (noting that gates closer to the start of the ride will close earlier)
- Sunday – Morning ride – Gate sitters from 7:00 am – approx. 3:00 pm (noting that gates closer to the start of the ride will close earlier)
You can volunteer for one, two, or all three days – every bit helps! Gate sitters will need to commit to staying at the gate until it is closed on the day. Those helping with catering will need to commit to helping with at least 1 meal.
Lunch packs are provided, but some previous sitters have taken their BBQ and made a day of it!
What’s the Goal?
To support the event effectively and raise the most funds possible, we need at least 20 volunteers. Will this be your contribution for 2025?
How to Help
Please email your availability for any or all of the days to pandc@malenyss.eq.edu.au.
Thank you for your continued support. With your help, we can make this event a success — and raise valuable funds for our school!
Thank You.

Next P&C Meeting Wednesday 11 June – We need You!
New parents are welcome and encouraged to attend our next general meeting on Wednesday 11 June at 5:45 pm for a 6:00pm start. This meeting will be held in the Computer Room (Upstairs in B Block – Building behind the Admin building) where parents can attend face to face or can tune in from their own home using Teams online access.
Our P&C is achieving some great new fundraising ideas and welcomes all newcomers to ensure that our P&C is truly representative of our whole school parent body. It was great to see some fresh faces at our last meeting.
Have a Great Week.
John

PBL (Positive Behaviour Learning)

Be Rule: Be Safe and Be Respectful
Buzz Phrase: I Keep My Cool
For weeks 5-8, starting Monday 19 May, our PBL Buzz Phrase is a SMART Goal which means it is rocket time!!

So, why are we doing this? When we Keep our Cool then everyone makes good choices inside and outside of the classroom. We can all enjoy our time at school, feeling safe and happy. It is a great time for us to think about recognising our emotions and making choices to show that we can take control of our own behaviour and let go of things out of our control.
This means:
- I keep my hands and feet to myself.
- I use calming strategies when I feel upset.
- I use the High 5 to help solve problems.
- I move away and re-set.
- I play fairly.
- I am a team player and show good sportsmanship.
When a student shows 4 Be behaviour in the classroom, the teacher will ask the student to put a coloured ball in the bucket. Then, at assembly, classes bring their buckets and empty the balls into the rocket. Lastly, when the rocket is full, the whole school achieves 20mins free play!! How Cool is that?

The PBL Team
Lost Property

Lost property is checked weekly and named items are returned to their owners. Items not collected by the end of the term will be washed and donated to local charities. Please ask your children to have a look, or yourself, in the alcove next to the Yr 4 eating area.
Now would be a great time to write your name on your jumper ready for the cooler weather!

When ordering, please ensure that you see the GREEN THUMB screen and receive an order confirmation email. This notes that your order has been successfully submitted and will be sent to our service.
Several times each week, we still have upset children turning up at the final bell for 1st Break looking for their 'missing' orders. We need all of the preparation time from 8:30am to 11:00am (when the first bell for 1st Break rings) to have every order ready for collection. It is not possible to prepare fresh or cooked meals during 1st Break.
Please ensure there are sufficient credits in your child's account so that they can purchase items from our Counter Menu in the event that their online order was not successfully completed or that they have forgotten to bring their lunch to school. We don't want to see any child go hungry!
Our current menu is available on the P&C website.
Thank you for your support and any casual or recurrent volunteering will make a big difference to our committed Team!

Chappy News
Chappy Week 2025
National School Chaplaincy week starts Monday 2 June. Wow, I have officially been here at Maleny State School as your Chaplain now for 3 years. It is so nice to know a lot of you by face and/or name, even if my 51-year-old memory box lets me down sometimes.
I thought I would give a little bit of a reminder of what the Chaplaincy Service offers at our school. Chaplains are available to support students, staff and families in the areas of social, emotional and spiritual needs. Every day is different for me, however there are a few things I do every week. One of those is breakfast club on Thursday mornings which I run with a valuable team of volunteers. Another thing I offer is lunch time clubs. I often run Lego club on Thursdays and craft club on Fridays. I sometimes offer 'Chappy Games' at lunch in the hall and also get out into the playground amongst the students some days. I help out in classrooms to provide some educational support where needed. One of my big roles is to coordinate our school's mentor program which supports a team of mentors in their valuable role. I have conversations with individuals, groups and classes around social and emotional issues when asked. There are many other little things that I find myself doing, as I see myself being in a place of seeing a need and helping to fill that need.
So, if you or your child ever needs an ear to listen, they can ask their teacher to speak with me. In saying that, if you as a parent or carer need to chat, I am here too. I work every Thursday and Friday and every second Wednesday. I can be reached through the office phone number or email address. Thank you school community for supporting school chaplaincy at Maleny State School and thank you all for being so welcoming into your community.
Chappy's quote for the week "Love and kindness are never wasted. They always make a difference. They bless the one who receives them and they bless you the giver" Barbara De Angelis
