Principal’s Report

Welcome Back
A special welcome to our new Preppies and new families that have commenced their first year at Maleny State School. We have 54 new Preppies and 24 new students across other year levels commencing with us this year. Our current enrolments stand at 397 students (similar to last year falling around 4 students short) which means we will continue with our classroom structure of 16 teachers.
I would like to thank families for ensuring children are wearing the correct uniform items and have all the items listed on their book lists. We are proud of our school and inclusive culture and rely on parents to ensure the correct uniform choices are upheld and not watered down in any way (especially black shoes, school hats and school or plain navy jumpers). We are very conscious of the current high cost of living expenses and do have the ability to assist families in need, please contact myself or Business Manager if we can support your family.
I congratulate all our staff who have worked incredibly hard over the last few weeks in creating a Supportive Learning Environment for all students and setting High Expectations for students with rules, routines, behaviours, uniforms and learning outcomes in all that we do.
Welcome Barbeque - Friday 14 February for All Our Families
Please join us on Friday, 14 February from 3.00pm – 4.00pm (straight after school) for a Free Sausage Sizzle. Meet some new families and Teachers, and catch up with some of your children’s friends’ families.
This event is a joint initiative of the School and our P&C.
Come along and enjoy some friendly company on our school oval or in the shed if it rains. Students love playing on the oval with their friends.
We look forward to seeing you there
Mewar Café Changes
Sadly, we farewell our convenor Clare who has done a wonderful job as convenor in 2024. We welcome Karen who will commence this Friday. Please show your support in the best way possible by volunteering if you can. The Mewar Café will continue to be open on a Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
Leadership Ceremony
Our Year 6 leadership ceremony will take place next Thursday 13 Feb at 9:00am in our Hall. Student leaders will be presented with their leadership badges. All Year 6 students will be presented with a Senior’s Badge to foster their leadership and responsibility within the school as role models to younger students.
School Parking
Please only use the 2 parks in front of the Prep crossing to pull up and drop students off. If using the drop off zone please do not leave your car and walk children in to school. With parking at a premium it is important that we use these parks efficiently to allow as many parents as possible access and reduce parking frustration. Your support here is much appreciated and will benefit all.
Please also Do Not Park in our local business car parks (as these are reserved for their business customers) or on grassed footpath areas, especially those at the back of Lawyer Street. We value our school neighbours and ask that parents and students be aware of our neighbours private land when parking and walking through properties.
Maleny SS School Values
- High Expectations
- A Supportive Learning Culture
- Being a Reflective Life Long Learner
We realise the importance of creating strong positive relationships with students and families to ensure we create a supportive learning culture in which our students can thrive. By setting high expectations and teaching children how to learn we aim to mould students into becoming reflective lifelong learners.
Before School Routines
Please Note: Supervision is only provided from 8:30am onwards, Students are encouraged not to attend before this time.
- Arrive at school from 8:30am onwards (Preps go straight to classrooms)
- Sit in year level area until the first bell goes
- After the first bell at 8:30am students may play handball on courts in year level area only or may go to the Innovation Centre and borrow a library book
- Running or hanging around toilet areas is not permitted
- When second bell goes students line up for class or move directly to classrooms
- Students coming to school by bus must come directly into the school and are not permitted to go to shops or wait outside the school.
After School Routines
Walking or Riding
After students are released from school they should head directly home promptly.
Bikes are to be kept in bike racks and scooters in the enclosed area provided near the staff room.
Students for safety reasons should wear a helmet and must dismount inside the school grounds, on footpath and when using the crossing.
It is important that students are respectful of all other footpath users.
Smile and acknowledge our Crossing Supervisors (It’s free and it will make you feel good).
Students waiting for parents in cars (arriving at 2:50pm)
Students are to wait quietly along side the Prep fence or behind pedestrian crossing area on school side only. Not on the fence across the road. Parents can park on this side of the road and students can then cross and meet them when they arrive. This is for their safety and a courtesy to our neighbours. If parents are ever later than the time the Crossing Supervisors have finished, children must move to the office, we will call home and they can wait there safely.
Waiting for High School Siblings
All students waiting for older siblings need to wait in the supervised area under B Block with bus students. Staff will escort them out on time to meet their older siblings.
No students are to wait on the other side of the road near crossing.
Bus Departures
2:50pm Buses
Students move promptly to the footpath and wait along the fence in front of the appropriate bus and wait for the Bus Driver to load students. Prep and Year 1 students are collected from their class and directed to the correct areas until they board their bus by school staff.
Students need to ensure they are not waiting on the walkway as this impedes pedestrian traffic.
Once loaded students must remain seated at all times and talk quietly.
Students must follow the QLD Transport Code of Conduct, I will be addressing expectations of bus behaviour and the Code of Conduct for Students Travelling on Buses at our next assembly. Bus drivers are the ones that enforce the Department of Transport policy. Any issues occurring on the bus should be conveyed to the bus driver in the first instant as soon as possible and a follow up if required with the bus company.
3:00pm Second set of Buses (Late Buses)
Students move directly under B Block at 2:50pm and wait quietly in bus lines.
Staff will take students and load on to buses at 3:00pm, this coincides with the same time High School students start to walk past our school.
OSHC – Out of School Hours Care
Students attending OSHC need to make their way to the OHSC Room immediately after being released from class. OSHC staff will collect Prep students from their classroom and escort them to the OSHC Room. Year 1 students will also be collected from their classrooms and escorted to the OSHC Room during the first term.
After School Drop off / Pick up Zone 2:50pm (to the right of pedestrian crossing on school side)
Students wait quietly next to Prep school fence until parents arrive NOT across the road.
Students load quickly when parents arrive.
Students need to ensure they are not waiting on the walkway as this impedes pedestrian traffic.
If parents have not arrived before our Crossing Supervisors have finished their shift students move to the office and wait to be collected.
Note: This is not an area to park and leave the car.
Students of the Week
Students will be presented with student of the week awards on assembly (held every second Wednesday commencing at 2:10pm. This week, is assembly week for Years 1 – 6 and our Preppies will join us in week 4 (reminder that Prep students need to be collected from the hall at the end of assembly).

Reminder: Slow down in 40km/h school zones
Police across the Sunshine Coast District are urging all motorists to take extra care, slow down and be on the lookout for pedestrians near schools. The school zone speed limit is designed to ensure motorists have a greater chance to react if something unexpected happens.
Children can be impulsive, unpredictable and inexperienced, which is why motorists need to exercise caution in the vicinity of a school.
Speeding through school zones greatly increases the risk to pedestrians as the faster a vehicle is travelling, the longer it takes to stop and the greater the severity of impact.
For further information on school zones, visit www.tmr.qld.gov.au/schoolzones.
P&C Meeting
Our first P&C Meeting will be held on Friday 14 February in the Innovation Centre (library), from 1:00pm to approximately 2:00pm. Younger children are welcome, where parents can occupy them, we have lots of fun things in the library to assist. Please join us in person or online, new faces are always welcome and encouraged. Further notification of this meeting will be emailed shortly.
Have a Magic week in Maleny.
John

PBL (Positive Behaviour for Learning)

A very warm welcome to all new families and welcome back to all continuing families. Maleny State School is a Positive Behaviour For Learning (PBL) school. Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a whole-school approach to creating a safe and supportive environment that has a strong evidence-base and is used in many Queensland State Schools. It uses preventative, teaching and reinforcement-based strategies to achieve meaningful and durable behaviour outcomes.
Each fortnight the whole school focuses on a Buzz Phrase which is reinforced in all settings in the school. Teaching about the Buzz Phrase includes looking at what the expected behaviour looks like and doesn’t look like. The teaching steps include Teach, Model, Practice and Reinforce. Students are recognised for following the 4 Be rules (Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be a Learner and Be Safe).
Our Be Rule for Weeks 1 and 2 is: Be Respectful
Our Buzz Phrase is: First Time - Every Time
Some examples of what this means at our school are:
- Following adult instructions the first time asked
- Respecting the right of other students to learn
- Respecting the right of teachers to teach
- Using good manners
- Caring for all property
- Having self-control
We hope you have a wonderful start to 2024.

When ordering, please ensure that you see the GREEN THUMB screen and receive an order confirmation email. This notes that your order has been successfully submitted and will be sent to our service.
Several times each week, we still have upset children turning up at the final bell for 1st Break looking for their 'missing' orders. We need all of the preparation time from 8:30am to 11:00am (when the first bell for 1st Break rings) to have every order ready for collection. It is not possible to prepare fresh or cooked meals during 1st Break.
Please ensure there are sufficient credits in your child's account so that they can purchase items from our Counter Menu in the event that their online order was not successfully completed or that they have forgotten to bring their lunch to school. We don't want to see any child go hungry!
Our current menu is available on the P&C website.
Thank you for your support and any casual or recurrent volunteering will make a big difference to our committed Team!
